PREPARE HEADER Z-BAR2Note: Header z-bar has been shipped with both ends fabricated to show the completed look. You only need to cut one end to proper dimension.

(-) 1 1⁄8"

(-) 13⁄4"

Step 2- Using the illustration below, cut to length and then notch the end.

2

Note: If Z-Bar build out (formerly called Eastern Z-Bar Adapter) is ordered, a 1⁄4" spacer has been attached to the rear side of the z-bar. At installation, drill 1⁄8" holes through spacer using the installation holes in the z-bar as a guide.

Step 3- Holding the continuous header z-bar in place, drill a 3⁄32" pilot hole into the top trim boad or brickmold through header mounting hole. Fasten the header firmly in place at both ends using (2) #6 x 1" screws. DO NOT INSTALL REMAINING SCREWS AT THIS TIME.

Fasten using #6 x 1" Phillips panhead screws at each end.

MEASURE & PREPARE Z-BAR HEIGHT3

2 Cut here 1⁄8" less than opening

Latch side z-bar

Step 1- If you purchased a door with handleset prep, double check the location of the handleset prep and make sure it does not interfere with the prime entry door handleset.

Step 2- Subtract 1⁄8" from opening height measurement. Using this result, measure the hinge and latch side z-bars from the top of the door. There are 2" of excess z-bar at the bottom of the door. Your measurement will fall in this area. Mark and cut the z-bars (see illustration).

Step 3- Wipe door slab down with a soft cloth to remove any metal burrs.

Step 1- Insert the vinyl sweep(s) into groove(s) at the bottom of the expander and pull it to the other end. See illustration on how many sweeps are installed by model type.

Step 2- Pinch the ends of the sweep groove(s) with pliers so the sweep(s) will not pull out (see illustration).

Step 3- Cut off the excess vinyl with scissors or a knife.

Step 4- Slide the short expander over the bottom of the active door, pushing it onto the door as far as it will go.

Do not apply long expander to fixed door. This will be done in Procedure 6.

Note: The vinyl sweep is packaged in the hardware kit. If the vinyl sweep has become kinked during shipment, place it in boiling water for 3 minutes and the sweep will return to its original shape.

Non-Active Door Bottom Expander

Step 1- Tilt one of the doors into the opening making certain the hinge side z-bar is tight against the trim board or brickmold.

Step 2- Hold the door firmly in position and drill a 3⁄32" pilot hole through the very top of hinge side z-bar mounting hole (screw cap cover channel) and install (1) #6 x 1" screw.

Step 3- Using a level, make sure the z-bar runs straight up and down. Make sure the weatherstripping flanges do not overlap at inside top corner. Drill pilot holes and install remaining screws.

Step 4- Check to make sure door operates properly.

Step 5- With the door open, locate the pre-drilled mounting holes in the z-bar and drill 3⁄16" pilot holes through the mounting holes and install the #8 x 1 1⁄2" screws for Piano Hinge and #7 x1" screws for Leaf Hinge.

DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE SCREWS.

Step 6- Repeat process for other door. Make certain both doors are even with each other at the top.

Step 7 - Adjust bottom expander on the active door to provide proper seal. Center 3⁄32" pilot hole in the expanders slot hole. Install (2) #6 x 1⁄2" color matched screws into the slots of each expander.

Step 8 - Install remaining screws in the header z-bar, maintaining proper spacing between doors and z-bar.

Note: If there is not enough space to mount the slide bolts as illustrated, the slide bolt will need to be moved towards the corner of the door until there is sufficient space.

Step 1- Measure the active door height from the exterior, including the bottom expander. Use this dimension to cut the astragal.

Step 2- Determine which end will be the bottom of the astragal. The weatherstripped flange will be to the inside allowing the active door to seal against it. The notch for the expander will be at the bottom. You will need to cut off the top.

Step 3- Measure the astragal including the bottom tongue. Cut the astragal to length (see note on Superview doors). Notch the top of the weatherstripping flange (1⁄4" to 5⁄16") Slide the astragal onto the fixed door flush with the top. Note: the astragal is al-ready punched for the offset of the 1 1⁄2" bottom expander from the factory.

Step 4- Close the fixed door and make sure the f lange notch clears the inside z-bar. From the outside, close both doors and adjust the astragal to an 1⁄8" margin.

Step 5- Measure the fixed door width from the exterior, including the tongue of the astragal. Cut the bot-tom expander to this dimension.

Note: Cut the hinge side end of the bottom expander. This leaves the factory edge against the astragal.

Step 6- Slide the bottom expander into place. Check the door for operation and margins. Secure the astragal and expander in place with #6 x 1⁄2" color matched screws and 3⁄32" pilot holes.

INSTALLING ASTRAGAL & BOTTOM EXPANDER TO FIXED

DOOR6The astragal is approximately 7 inches longer than needed and notched for the bottom expander at both ends. This allows it to be used for a right or left hinged door.

Step 1- To locate the slide bolt at the sill, position the keeper on the sill, close the door and hold the slide bolt against the door so that the body of the slide bolt clears the keeper.

Step 2- Operate the slide bolt so that the pin is fully engaged in the keeper. The exact location of the the slide bolt depends upon the location of the door expander and that the bolt is mounted high enough to clear the keeper and is also fully engaged in the keeper.

Step 3- Drill a 3⁄32" pilot hole through the door frame (screw should not be placed at the miter seam of panel) and install #6 x 3⁄4" screw. Repeat 3 times.

Step 4- Mount the header slide bolt at the top of the fixed door and use the shim (clear spacer block) for under the slide bolt so the bolt clears the header z-bars weatherstrip flange, (1" from inside edge of door stile - see illustration).

INSTALLING SLIDE BOLTS TO FIXED DOOR7

Note: If there is not enough space to mount the slide bolts as illustrated, the slide bolt will need to be moved towards the corner of the door until there is sufficient space.

INSTALLING MORTISE HARDWARE KIT9

Troubleshooting Tips:

#1- If for some reason, the mortise lock that is inside the door frame was removed, make sure you have correctly positioned it back into the door frame. The non-stamped side of the metal mortise lock should be facing the outside of the storm door. The stamped side of the metal mortise lock should be facing the inside of the storm door (inside the home). The flat side of the livebolt must be to the outside of the storm door and the radius side of the live bolt must be to the inside of the storm door.

#2 - Do not use a high impact drill to install the handleset - doing so will cause the screws to be stripped out. We recommend using a Phillips head hand tool.

#3 - Be careful! Do not apply exessive torque to the set screws - doing so will cause the set screw unable to be removed, thus creating a broken handleset and/or damaged storm door.

#4 - Make sure the nylon bushing on the handleset is inside the euschian plate (trim plate). Tighten the set screw while holding onto outside handle tightly. There will be a slight play in the handleset (it will not be extremely tight).

CLEANING & MAINTENANCE16Glass Sash(s): To Clean the Glass Area that Contains Clear Glass or a Sungate 500® Low-E Coating:

• Use a soft, clean, high-absorbent, lint-free cloth.

• Utilize a 50/50 mixture of isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and water. This evaporates more slowly than typical cleaners and will keep streaking to a minimum.

• Spray the cleaning solution on the glass surface to be cleaned. Important! do not wash the glass in direct sunlght.

• Wipe the cleaning solution off the glass using a circular motion applying light to moderate pressure to remove dirt residue.

• If this solution does not remove the dirt as desired, any household cleaner can be used; e.g., Windex™, Sparkle™, 409™, etc.

• If the household cleaners are used, reduce the area to be cleaned to more easily allow removal of the solution prior to evaporation (which is the cause of streaking). If streaks occur, reduce the area further.

• Products which foam or lather will help slow the evaporation of the cleaning solution and allow time to remove the residue. They may help ‘lubricate’ the surface which will give the cleaning cloth a more familiar feel, similar to uncoated glass.

To Clean the Aluminum Paint Finish:

• Wash with a mild soap and water and treat like your new car finish.

• If finish is accidentally scratched or chipped, use touch up paint available from your dealer.

• To protect the finish, we recommend spraying the finish with a vinyl protector such as Armor-All® or use a high-quality auto wax and polish the surface.

For Decorative Brass Inlay:

• Brass inlay will naturally oxidize with the outside elements. To keep the brass finish looking new, use a brass cleaner, such as Bon-Ami® brass cleaner.

For Brass Handlesets:

If you purchased a handleset with a Bright Brass, Bright Brass Look or Satin Nickle Finish, these finishes are warranted against tarnishing for as long as you own and live in the home in which the product was installed. The mechanical defects are warrantied for a period of (1) year from date of installation.

PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSE SOLUTIONDoor is squeaking. Hinge to jamb screws are too

tight.Back off screws 1⁄4 of a turn.

New hinges are too tight. Lubricate hinges with a silicone spray lubricant.

Latch side of Door will not close. Striker not engaging with hand-leset.

Remount striker and shim behind it (if necessary. Replace striker with a 90° angle (will be marked as an A).

Z-bars are out of square in the opening.

Remount z-bars and shim behind the zbars (if necessary).

Hinge side of door is binding with weatherstripping.

Z-bars are out of square in the opening.

Remount z-bars and shim behind the zbars (if necessary).

Weatherstripping needs to set. The weatherstripping will bind a little bit causing the storm door to swing forward until the closer is mounted. The closer will take up the force of the compression of the weatherstripping. Also, the weatherstripping is new and will need to “set”, which only takes a short time before the weatherstripping settles.

Door not closing. Air pressure between prime entry door and storm door. Air is trapped and needs vented.

Raise bottom expander up so that the bottom of sweep(s) only touches the top of the threshold.

Closer speed needs adjusted. Adjust closer by turning the adjustment screw to release pressure.

Handleset will not engage into strike in jamb.

Door is too far away from jamb. 1. Add a shim behind the strike plate that is in the hardware box. 2. Use a strike plate that has a 90°angle, such as a strike plate stamped “A”.

Closer not working properly. Adjustments need to be done to closer.

1. Recheck closer instruction manual for proper closer installation. Proceed by removing the closer adjustment screw from the closer. Fully open door and allow it to close (door will slam shut). Reinstall closer adjustment screw allowing only 1 or 2 threads of the screw to be turned in. Fully open door and allow the door to close. Adjust the screw 1⁄4 to 1⁄2 turn to achieve the desired closing speed sufficient to latch the door.Note: For dual closers, adjust each closer individually (with the other closer being disconnected from the door). The closing speed should be the same for each closer.

More latching force is needed. 1. The jamb bracket may be moved up to 1" away from the door (rather than the recommended 1⁄4"). However, please note: moving the jamb bracket further from the door reduces the door opening!
