Introduction

About this manual This manual provides all the information you need to install and uninstall SilkPerformer software and to prepare the load testing environment. It suggests pre-installation hardware and software requirements and offers alternative installation options.

What you will learn This chapter contains the following sections:

Overview

SilkPerformer Setup Wizard provides several options for installing and creating a load testing environment.

Before you can install SilkPerformer, the Setup Wizard confirms that all the software you need for installation and use of SilkPerformer is available on your computer. If it is not, the Setup Wizard provides options for installing the missing software. You can also access the installation programs for these optional programs using Windows Explorer, as they are readily available on the installation CD.

SilkPerformer software can be installed in two versions. On the controller computer you can install both the Multi-Machine controller and agent software, which includes documentation and sample files. Agent computers only need to have agent software installed on them. To perform load tests with SilkPerformer, you need to install the controller software on at least one controller computer.

Standalone mode can be used when licenses need only be available to a local machine.

Note Evaluation installations don’t require SilkMeter licensing. See “SilkPerformer SOA Evaluation Version” for details.

SilkMeter must be run as a central license server to enable access to license pools for multiple machines running Borland test automation software. License server mode is recommended for use in most QA labs.

Note The SilkMeter License Server configuration can be changed at any time. To start the Change your License Server Configuration utility go to Start/Programs/Borland/SilkPerformer SOA Edition 2007/Administration Tools/Change your License Server Configuration.

SilkPerformer SOA Evaluation Version

If you have installed the evaluation version of SilkPerformer SOA Edition, you may use the full product functionality for 30 days. The software will stop operating once the evaluation period expires.

Tip To ease you into the process of working with SilkPerformer SOA Edition, it is recommended that you review the SilkPerformer .NET Testing and Java Testing books. These PDF-based books are accessible via SilkPerformer's Start menu.

To upgrade to the full version of SilkPerformer SOA Edition, contact your Borland sales representative. For details about obtaining, installing, and using SilkPerformer licenses, contact Borland Customer Support.

To uninstall agent software, execute the following command:PerfRsManager -r -host <agent name> -port <port number> -pwdService <password> -ssl -log

If the agent software responds to the default port, you can omit the -port parameter. Also, if you don’t want to secure the communication channel, omit the -ssl option. All the commands shown above generate log files with detailed

information about the upgrade or deinstallation process. If you don’t want these log files to be generated, omit the -log parameter.

Scenario 5:Two local area networks, connection via HTTP proxy

In Scenario 5, the controller and agent computers are located in different local area networks that are connected over the Internet. At least one of the local area networks is protected by a firewall, so the controller and agent computers must communicate via an HTTP proxy. The following figure illustrates this network environment.

Figure 5: Remote installation—two LANs connected over HTTP proxy

Working on the controller computer, you can upgrade and uninstall the SilkPerformer Agent software on the remote agent computer (<agent name>). The communication thereby takes place via an HTTP proxy (<proxy name>, <proxy port>). You need to know the port to which the agent software responds (<agent port>, by default 19200 for non-secured communication, 19201 for secure communication) and, if in use, the password by which agent software is protected from unauthorized access (<password>). To upgrade the agent software, execute the following command:

PerfRsManager -u -host <agent name> -port <agent port> -pwdService <password> -ssl -log -httpProxy <proxy name> <proxy port>

To uninstall agent software, execute the following command:PerfRsManager -r -host <agent name> -port <agent port> -pwdService <password> -ssl -log -httpProxy <proxy name> <proxy port>

If the agent software responds to the default port, you can omit the -port parameter. Also, if you don’t want to secure the communication channel, omit the -ssl option. All the commands shown above generate log files with detailed information about the upgrade or deinstallation process. If you don’t want these log files to be generated, omit the -log parameter.

Scenario 6:Two local area networks, connection via SOCKS proxy

In Scenario 6, the controller and agent computers are located in different local area networks that are connected over the Internet. At least one of the local area networks is protected by a firewall, so the controller and agent computers must communicate via a SOCKS proxy. The following figure illustrates this network environment.

TroubleshootingThis section lists problems that can occur during setup and suggests ways of solving them:

PerfORB: 23 Connection could not be established. Possible error reasons:• The SilkPerformer Agent Service is not running on the remote computer.• You may have specified the wrong port number.

Solution: Start SilkPerformer Agent Service on the remote computer.

PerfORB: 29 ORB is down. The connection was closed for an unknown reason.

Solution: Run Remote Agent Setup again.

Remote Setup: 4 A newer version of SilkPerformer was detected on the remote computer.

Solution: Don’t install the older version of SilkPerformer.

Remote Setup: 5 SilkPerformer Agent software already exists on the remote computer. Installing agent software is possible only if SilkPerformer 4.0 (or higher) doesn’t exist on the remote computer.

Solution: Upgrade agent software on the remote computer rather than installing it.

Remote Setup: 6 SilkPerformer Controller Software already exists on the remote computer. Installing agent software is possible only if SilkPerformer 4.0 (or higher) doesn’t exist on the remote computer.

Solution: Upgrade agent software on the remote computer rather than installing it.

System: 32 Remote Agent Setup can’t access a particular file because the file is in use by another application.

Solution:• Close the application that currently accesses the file and run Remote

Agent Setup again.• If the file is locked by a system process, restart the computer and run

Remote Agent Setup again.

System: 53 The network path wasn’t found. It could be that the registry service isn’t running on the remote computer.

Solution: Start the registry service on the remote computer.

System: 1219 The supplied credentials conflict with an existing set of credentials. A network connection to the target computer already exists. This connection was established with a different user/password combination.

Solution: Execute the following DOS command to close the connection.net use \\<machine name> /delete

To check if the connection has in fact been closed, execute the following DOS command:

net use

Finally, start setup again.

System: 10054 An existing connection was closed by the remote computer. It could be that a time-out has occurred. This is likely to happen when you’re using a modem slower than 56 kbps.
