Product Introduction The AIRSYS FCB (Free Cooling Box) is one of several energy saving AIRSYS HVAC products

available to Verizon Wireless. The FCB system described in this document is a stand-alone

economizer that can be installed into a shelter configured with any existing 3rd

party HVAC

systems. When installed, the FCB takes master control over the existing HVAC system to

manage the environment for lowest cost operation.

The FCB has two key benefits:

1. Optimization of free air cooling Free Air Cooling Defined: Simply put, is using the outside air to cool a shelter instead of

running a compressor to cool. The AIRSYS FCB consumes 1% to 10% of the energy to cool

a site when compared to a compressor trying to cool the same site. There are some

limitations to the ability to Free Cool:

Outside temperature must be cooler than inside temperature. In fact the colder the outside air

the greater the cooling capacity of the FCB. As the outside air temperature warms up to the inside

air temperature the FCB will be unable to cool the site sufficiently to keep it with the set points

(77+2/-4°F). It is at this point the FCB will allow the existing HVAC system to provide cooling.

Relative Humidity in the shelter must stay below 85%. In order to prevent water vapor from

condensing on sensitive electronic equipment, the relative humidity inside the shelter is managed

by a humidity sensor that is part of the FCB control package.

Getting to the highest energy efficiency:

As stated above the FCB requires<10% of the energy consumed by a standard HVAC

system, to keep a site cool. As such the more the FCB can run the more energy is saved.

The AIRSYS FCB is designed to provide cooling benefit even when the outside temperature

is nearly equal to the inside temp. This is mostly due to the fact that the air being exhausted

at the site is extracted up higher, which is commonly much warmer air than the nominal

inside temperature. AIRSYS has years of experience optimizing their control schemes to

remove as much heat as possible while consuming the least amount of energy.

2. DC operation to preserve cooling during prime power outages. Shelters with no generator on site: The loss of prime power often means the loss of air

conditioning. Once the air conditioning is lost many sites will last 45 – 90 minutes before

shelter temperatures rise enough to cause critical equipment failures (>110 °F). If you have a

DC powered FCB installed the site can maintain temperature with a small additional load on

the DC reserve. Even if the outside temperatures are higher than the inside temperature, a

DC powered FCB will provide emergency ventilation to stave off the rise in site temp and

improve site reliability.

Physical Location of the FCB

Where on the shelter should the FCB be located?

FCB location is best if it can be located according to the drawing below:

Mounted on short side of the shelter so there is maximum Air flow

Centered on the wall to facilitate good air flow

With a minimum of 24“ clearance between supply vent and partial1 blockage

Do not place directly behind complete supply blockage suck as a battery bank.

1. Partial is referring to an open equipment rack whereby the space in the rack directly in front of the supply air

grill is at least 50% open.
