More children are killed every year as passengersin car crashes than by any other type of injury. Toreduce the risk of SERIOUS INJURYor DEATH, read thisowners manual and your vehicle owners manual before in-stalling and using this child restraint. Using a child restraintmakes a big difference. By properly using this child restraintand following these instructions (and the instructions thataccompany your vehicle), you will greatly reduce the risk ofserious injury or death to your child from a crash. Do notbe misled by the commonly used term safety seat; norestraint system can prevent all injuries in all crashes. Many

properly restrained adults and children are injured in motorvehicle crashes, including relatively minor crashes. A prop-erly used child restraint is the best way to minimize injuriesto your child and to increase the chances for your childssurvival in most crashes.

    Table of Contents

Child Requirements No restraint can guarantee absolute protection from

injury in every crash. This child restraint is designed for useby children in

rear-facing and forward-facing. To use this childrestraint properly, children MUSTmeet weight/sizespecifications as follows:

For Rear-facing Use The child weighs 2.3 18 kg (5 40 lbs) The child is 48 94 cm (19 37 inches) ANDthe top

of childs head is at least 25 mm (1 in.) below the top

of the child restraint seat back.DO NOTuse this or any child restraint with apremature infant until after consulting your doctor.Premature infants may have difficulty breathing whenin a sitting position.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends thatchildren ride in the rear-facingposition to the highestweight or height allowed by the child restraint.

Note:Once your child exceeds18 kg (40 lbs) ORthe top of their head is within25 mm (1 inch)of the top of the child restraint seat back, they

MUSTuse this child restraint in the forward-facing position.

For Forward-facing Use The child weighs 10 29.4 kg (22 65 lbs) The child is 71 127 cm (28 50 in.) Child is one year old or older

Note:Once your child exceeds29.4 kg (65 lbs)ORis tallerthan 127 cm (50 in.), they can nolonger safely use this child restraint, and youshould consider using a booster seat.

Air Bag Warning DO NOTuse this child restraint in the front seat of a

vehicle equipped with an air bag, unless the air baghas been deactivated. Interaction between a rear-facing restraint and air bags may cause serious injuryor death. Air bags may cause serious injury or death tochildren 12 years of age and under. If your vehicle hasan air bag, refer to your vehicle owners manual for

child restraint installation. If the rear seat of your vehicle is equipped withside air bags, refer to the following information forproper usage:

Vehicles built prior to the 2002 model year:DO NOTuse this restraint in a vehicle seating positionequipped with a side air bag unless authorized by thevehicle manufacturer.

Model year 2002 and newer vehicles:Refer to your vehicle owners manual before placingthis restraint in a seating position equipped with a sideair bag.

DO NOTplace any objects between the restraint and

the side air bag, as an expanding air bag may causethe items to strike your child.

Location Warnings According to statistics, children are safer when properly

restrained in a rear seating position than in the frontseating position. Generally, the center rear position issafest and should be used if available. Children 12 andunder should ride in the back seat of the vehicle.

ONLYuse this child restraint on forward-facing vehicleseats. DO NOTuse this restraint with vehicle seats

that face the rear or side. ONLYuse this child restraint on vehicle seats withbacks that lock into place.

Some child restraints do not fit all vehicles or all seat-ing locations. There are many thousands of combina-tions of vehicle makes, models, child restraint configu-rations, seat belt designs and seat cushion shapes. The easiest way to determine whether your childrestraint is suitable for a particular seating position isto check for a tight installation. If the child restraintcan not be properly installed, DO NOTuse the childrestraint. Consult vehicle owners manual, try adifferent seating location or call Evenflo.

Premature Infants DO NOTuse this or any child restraint with a prema-ture infant until after consulting your doctor. Prematureinfants may have difficulty breathing when in a sittingposition.

Rear-facing Warnings DO NOTuse this child restraint rear facing in a vehicle

equipped with lap belts that only lock during a suddenstop or crash (emergency locking retractors). You mustuse a seating location with a locking seat belt. Checkyour vehicle owners manual to see if you have lapbelts with emergency locking retractors.

When using this restraint rear-facing, DO NOTloosen

the vehicle seat belt to provide more leg room as thiswill prevent the child restraint from protecting yourchild.

Fold-down armrests could pose a hazard to a rear-facing child in certain types of collisions. Consult yourvehicle owners manual before installing any rear-facing child restraint in front of a fold-down armrest.

NEVERturn a child restraint forward-facing with aninfant weighing less than 10 kg (22 lbs) or less thanone year of age, crash forces may cause serious injuryor death.

The headrest on the vehicle seat that the child faceswhen sitting in the rear facing mode should be placedin the lowest position. The vehicle seat back that thechild faces must be fully padded and free of any hardobjects.

Forward-facing Warnings If your child weighs more than 29.4 kg (65 lbs) or their

shoulders are above the highest harness level, you

MUSTdiscontinue using this child restraint as it mayno longer adequately protect your child.

Seat Belt Warnings DO NOTuse this child restraint in a vehicle with door-

mounted seat belts. DO NOTuse this child restraint in a vehicle with seat

belts that automatically move along the vehicle framewhen the door is opened. These seat belts will not holda child restraint properly.

Use only with vehicle seat belts that can be pulled tightand will stay locked.

DO NOTuse this child restraint if it moves more than25 mm (1 inch) side to side or front to back at the

vehicle belt path. Serious injury or death may resultfrom poor installation. If you can not tightly secure thechild restraint, try again or move it to another location.

If the vehicle seat belts are not routed and fastenedcorrectly, the child restraint may not protect your childin a crash.

DO NOTallow the seat belt release button to touchthe child restraint. Accidental contact may cause theseat belt to release. If necessary, turn the seat beltrelease button away from the child restraint or movethe child restraint to a different location.

Failure to adjust the harness or seat belts snuglyaround your child may result in your child striking the

vehicles interior during a sudden stop or crash. Serious injury or death may occur. Remove locking clip from vehicle seat belt when not

used with a child restraint, or the vehicle seat belt willnot properly restrain an adult or child. Serious injurycould occur.

LATCH Warnings The LATCH system is intended to be used ONLYas de-

scribed in these instructions. Serious injury or death mayresult from misuse. LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethersfor CHildren) is a system for attaching the child restraintto your vehicle seat. It can be used in place of the seatbelts in vehicles with vehicle lower anchor bars. Referto your vehicle owners manual for the locations of thevehicle lower anchor bars. Note:Your vehicle ownersmanual may refer to this system as Universal Anchor-age System, Lower Universal Anchorage System,or ISOFIX.

DO NOTuse the lower anchors of the child restraintanchorage system (LATCH system) to attach this childrestraint when restraining a child weighing more than20.5 kg (45 lbs) with the internal harnesses of the childrestraint.

ONLYuse for securing child restraint to vehicle loweranchor bars.

ALWAYSread and follow exactly the instructions thataccompany your vehicle and child restraint.

NEVERattach two lower anchor connectors to onevehicle lower anchor bar.

DO NOTuse the vehicle seat belts to install a childrestraint when using the lower anchor connectorassembly. Using both together can cause slack in asudden stop or crash.

ALWAYSbe sure that the lower anchor connectors arefully engaged onto the vehicle lower anchor bars bypulling hard on the lower anchor straps. If they are notfully engaged, the lower anchor connector assembly willnot secure your child restraint. Serious injury or deathmay result.

DO NOTuse this child restraint if it moves more than25 mm (1 inch) side to side or front to back at eitherthe rear-facing or forward-facing belt path on the childrestraint. Serious injury or death may result from poorinstallation. If you can not tightly secure the childrestraint, try again or move it to another location.

To avoid a strangulation hazard, you MUSTstore theunused lower anchor connector assembly strap, with allslack removed, in storage area on the back of the seat.Roll or fold excess lower anchor connector assemblystrap and secure with a rubber band to prevent seriousinjury to vehicle occupants.

WARNING In addition to these instructions, read and follow your

vehicle owners manual regarding installation of thechild restraint and LATCH. If there is a discrepancy, follow your vehicle owners manual.

Top Tether Warnings Top tether strap is for forward-facing ONLY. Failure to secure the top tether strap (provided) as

specified in these instructions could result in serious

injury. The top tether strapMUSTbe used if your vehicle hasa plain lap belt that only locks during a sudden stop orcrash (emergency locking retractors) AND/OR if yourvehicle has seat belts whose buckles extend from a slotin the vehicle seat cushion in front of the crease wherethe seat and back cushions meet. Otherwise the childrestraint cannot be installed tightly, increasing therisk of injury to your child. Check your vehicle ownersmanual to see if your vehicle has emergency lockingretractors.

To avoid a strangulation hazard, you MUSTtightly rollor fold excess tether strap and secure with the strap/

rubber band. Attach the tether hook to the storage clipwhen not in use. This will keep an unused tether fromhitting someone during a crash.

Additional Warnings DO NOTuse child restraint if it is damaged, broken, or

missing parts. DO NOTuse this restraint if it has been involved in a

crash. It must be replaced. NEVERleave child unattended. DO NOTremove back cover. This child restraint must be securely belted to the

vehicle at all times with the vehicle seat belt or loweranchor connector assembly and tether strap (if avail-

able). An unsecured child restraint may injure someoneif a crash occurs.

DO NOTattach additional padding, toys, or otherdevices not made by Evenflo to the child restraint.Items not tested with the child restraint could injurethe child.

WARNING Failure to follow installation instructions could result

in serious injury or death. These instructions and theinstructions in your vehicle owners manual must befollowed carefully. If there is a conflict between thetwo, the vehicle owners manual regarding childrestraint installation must be followed.

In hot or sunny weather, ALWAYScheck the seat, buckle and lower anchor connectors, and adjuster forhot areas before placing a child into the child restraint. The child could be burned. Cover the child restraintwith a light colored blanket when you leave thevehicle.

In cold weather, DO NOTdress the child in bulkyclothing like snowsuits if the child is riding in a childrestraint. Bulky coats/snowsuits make it difficult toproperly tighten the harness to the child which mayallow the child to be ejected from the restraint duringa crash. If necessary, place a blanket over theharnessed child without interfering with the childrestraint harness system.

Children have STRANGLEDin loose or partiallybuckled harness straps. Fully restrain the child.

Everyone rides buckled up or the vehicle does not go.Make no exceptions for adults or children. If someone un-buckles, stop the vehicle. Being firm and consistent fromthe start will mean fewer discipline problems as childrenget older. An unrestrained person can be thrown into andinjure other passengers.

Many safety advocates and healthcare professionalsrecommend that children ride rear facing for as long as

possible. See limitations recommended on page 1. NEVERtry to tend to a crying babys needs while driving.NEVERtake a baby out of a child restraint for comfortingwhile the vehicle is moving.

DO NOTallow a child in a vehicle to have objects suchas lollipops or ice cream on a stick. The object can injurethe child if the vehicle swerves or hits a bump.

DO NOTfeed an infant who is riding in a child restraint. Put sharp or heavy items in the trunk. Anything loose can

be deadly in a crash. For child restraints equipped with leather seat pads, cover

your seat with a blanket in warm weather. Leather canbecome very hot in direct sunlight.

If you can move the restraint more than25 mm (1 inch) side to side or front to back at theforward-facing belt path, the aircraft seat belt is nottight enough, and you MUSTinstall again until the seatbelt is tight.

To order replacement parts you can order on-line at www.evenflo.com or contact Evenflo. When you contact us, pleasehave the product model number and date of manufacture(found on the back of the child restraint).
