PROJECT OBJECTIVES

InsSciDE – Inventing a shared Science Diplomacy for Europe – creates a comprehensive and engaging process to understand the multiple forms and power of science diplomacy in European destiny. InsSciDE investigates past and present experience, co-constructs insights with practitioners, provides theoretical and strategic frameworks and guidance to support stakeholder awareness and informed policies within the European Union. Its objectives are to:

1. Reveal and connect multiple European experiences, showing how and why science and diplomacy have been combined and coordinated (or not) by Europe and by Member States when addressing global challenges.

2. Map this knowledge into theoretical and strategic frameworks.

enerate i ance for olic re ection an action choices at oth an e er State levels: strategy, best practices, awareness and training activities for science diplomats and stakeholders.

Foster ialo e co etence il in self re e i it net or s an inter rofessional linkages among practitioners and other stakeholders.

5. Disseminate the learning to a wide audience and sustain its continuing use.

Thierry J.-L. Courvoisier is astrophysicist. He was born in 1953 in Geneva, Switzerland. He studied theoretical physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ) and obtained a PhD, also in theoretical physics, at the University of Zurich in 1980. He was a scientist in ESA’s X-ray astronomy project EXOSAT at the European Space Operations centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt (Germany), and worked on HST at the Space Telescope European Coordinating Facility at the European Southern Observatory, ESO, in Garching (Germany). He joined the University of Geneva in 1988 where he became professor in 1992 and full professor in 1999. He is now honorary professor. He developed high energy astrophysics at the university of Geneva and created and led the INTEGRAL Science Data Centre (ISDC) that is in charge of processing, archiving, analysing and distributing worldwide the data from ESA’s gamma ray astronomy satellite INTEGRAL. His research has been dealing mainly with the physics of active galactic nuclei. Thierry Courvoisier was president of the European Astronomical Society (EAS) from 2010 to 2017.

Thierry Courvoisier became president of the Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences (SCNAT) in January 2012 and president of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences in January 2013. He exercised both mandates until the end of 2015. He is now president of the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) for the period 2017-2019.

From July 2009 to June 2010, Thierry Courvoisier sailed with his wife Barbara their 40ft sail yacht Cérès from the European Arctic Regions to South America and back to Europe.
