Inspiring young minds, creating possibilities Parent Newsletter Issue 7 October 2019 Welcome to Term 4 A warm welcome back to all North Perth students and families to what promises to be a busy but rewarding last term for 2019. We certainly had a highly productive and engaging Term 3 which culminated with the Fun Run and Footy Colours Day. Some other highlights for me were, the Massed Choir performance, Book Week, Goonderup Day, Kindy/Pre-primary Sports Day and our Instrumental Music studentsperformance at our last assembly. This term we will be reflecting on the Review Process that began in 2018 and planning to embed processes and strategies to continue our improvement. The schools Business Plan 2020-2022 and School Improvement Action Plan will be written in consultation with all staff and the School Board, as we plan to inspire young minds and create possibilities. Andrew Streeton Acting Principal Staff Development Day On Monday 14 October our staff attended a development day with a focus on school improvement and embedding good practice. The following information is a brief overview of the main sessions. Business Plan 2020-2022 Board member, Duncan Fletcher, has been working with the members of the Administration Team over the past 6 weeks to develop a framework for the new Business Plan 2020-2022. Duncan presented our restructured version which places the core purpose of the plan on the students, with the responsibility for their achievements being shared between the school, the parents, and the wider school community. He also worked with teachers in a brainstorming and feedback session on the draft concept, which was a positive and productive time. It has been beneficial to tap into the skill set we have on our School Board. This information will now be shared at the next School Board meeting. NAPLAN Teachers reviewed whole school NAPLAN data before working in small groups to analyse each test. The purpose of this was to identify specific concepts that require attention in Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation, Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability, and to develop strategies to target improvement. PAThS Program PAThS is a Social and Emotional program which was implemented as a whole school approach last year . Teachers spent time reflecting on what is working well and what needs to improve so we can fully embed this program across the school. Behaviour Support Guidelines These were published to the school community last term. Staff discussed the implementation across the school to ensure a consistent approach is achieved. Term 4 Staff spent time planning for Term 4, revisiting our purpose and creating guiding principles. New Teacher in Room 6 We would like to welcome Mrs Kay Lambourne who will be teaching Room 6, Year 4/5 this term, as Ms Covban is on leave. Mrs Lambourne has been a primary school teacher since 2004. She taught in the Goldfields (Kalgoorlie and Kambalda) for many years before moving to Muchea in 2013. Since then she has been working at primary schools in Ellenbrook and Bindoon. Mrs Lambourne is an experienced teacher across all year levels, and has a holistic and explicit approach to teaching. NPPS School Board Information Night Last term the results of the School Board Self-Assessment Survey revealed that many members of our parent community are unsure of the exact roles and responsibilities of the School Board. In response to this, Julie Woodhouse, Principal at Butler PS, will be presenting a School Board Information Session on Monday 21 October in the school library from 6:00—6:45pm. This will be a brief information session followed by an opportunity to meet the Board members while enjoying some drinks and nibbles. 2020 Kindergarten and Pre-primary Meetings Parents of 2020 Kindergarten and Pre-primary students are invited to attend an information session this term. These sessions provide parents with general information about routines and expectations, as well as advice on how to best support their child at school. The information sessions will be held on the following dates:

Kindergarten 2020: Friday 1 November at 9:00am in Room 16

Pre-primary 2020: Friday 8 November at 9:00am in Room 16 Courtyard Upgrade During the holidays the damaged brick planter box in the courtyard outside Rooms 9 and 10 was removed. This has now created an open space with a continuous step. In the coming weeks a shade structure will be built over one side of this area giving us 40 square metres of shade for an outside classroom. Construction will take 3-4 days and the area will be fenced off during this time. The dates are yet to be confirmed. Damage to Fencing The stormy conditions on Friday 4 October resulted in a large branch falling and damaging the fence behind the soccer goals. This is currently under repair.

Class Structure for 2020 We are currently determining our class structure for 2020. There are a number of factors we need to consider, including; the current school enrolment, confirmed new enrolments, children who will not be returning in 2020 and maintaining the recommended maximum class sizes. We are also aware that if the actual enrolment number is lower or higher than expected, it may be necessary to adjust the class structure in the first few weeks of the 2020 school year. It is for this reason we are asking families to let us know if they will be leaving the school. Please email [email protected] to advise if your child will not be returning in 2020. Class Allocations The classroom teachers are responsible for allocating children to the 2020 classes. The current Kindergarten teachers will allocate children to the 2020 Pre-primary classes, the Pre-primary teachers will allocate children to the Year 1 classes, and so on. When making allocations they will be taking into account many factors to ensure classes are balanced and that the needs of all students are considered. If you have academic or social and emotional concerns for your child, which would assist us with class allocations for 2020, please email [email protected] before Friday 1 November. Class lists will be published before the end of Term 4, 2020. Calum W - World’s Greatest Shave Effort After growing his hair, Calum was inspired to participate in the World’s Greatest Shave after seeing an advert on TV to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. Calum ended up raising $2134, which is an outstanding effort. Not only that, he was also able to donate his hair to make a wig. Well done Calum, from all of us at North Perth Primary School. We are so proud of you.

NAPLAN 2019 NAPLAN results for Year 3 and 5 students for 2019 were received at the end of last term. The results show significant improvements across both Year 3 and Year 5 in all learning areas (Numeracy, Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation). All results were at or above expected levels (i.e., expected = within one standard deviation of the predicted school mean, above expected = more than one standard deviation above the predicted school mean).

The results summarised show that the Year 3s performed above cohorts from ‘like schools’ in Numeracy, Reading, Writing and Grammar and Punctuation, and the Year 5 cohort performed above ‘like schools’ in Grammar and Punctuation. Progress in our Year 5 cohort from their Year 3 NAPLAN results, show an increase of either one or two bands in all areas.

Teachers will be performing more in-depth analysis of the NAPLAN data with the assistance of the outside agency Best Performance, early in Term 4. This data will inform target setting for our Business Plan 2020-2022, School Improvement Action Plan and Operational Plans for 2020.

NIGHT OF CELEBRATION - SAVE THE DATE

The Night of Celebration will be held on Friday 13 December. Make sure you save the date as we would love to see everyone there. We have been working in partnership with the P&C Art Committee to arrange for the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy to run weekly workshops for all classes Kindy to Year 6. These classes will be held each Monday and Tuesday from November 11 through to December 10 with some drama performances at the Night if Celebration. Drama is a great activity to build confidence, self-esteem, social skills and verbal communication skills. We look forward to five weeks of workshops during this term. All information regarding this incursion will be sent home soon.

MASSED CHOIR Congratulations to our Massed Choir students on their outstanding performance at the Perth Concert Hall last term. Our students joined with choirs from eight other public schools on one of the nine evenings the event was held. This is a choral activity that North Perth PS have been participating in since 2013. Each year choir members are given the opportunity to audition to be a compere or a soloist on the night of their school’s performance. This year we were delighted to have Mira Vickery selected as a soloist and we congratulate her on her talented and confident solo performance in This Golden Land. Congratulations to Mrs MacPherson on the wonderful performance. Your hard work and commitment is an asset to our school. Thank you to all the parents who have supported the choir students throughout the year by ensuring they attended the weekly rehearsals and assisted in preparing their children for this performance.

Artist of the Month - September

Leela L from Room 9 received the Artist of the Month Award for September. Leela’s class learning goal was to reproduce a landscape painting in the style of a chosen Australian Impressionist artist. This task aimed at developing an understanding of the style of Impressionism and an appreciation of Australian artwork from that era. Leela reproduced a painting originally done by Arthur Streeton in 1889. The title of the painting is - Golden Summer, Eaglemont. Leela has enhanced her realistic artwork with varied use of colour, detailed textures, life-like shadows and eye-catching highlights. Congratulations on your amazing artwork, Leela.

SAFE TO SCHOOL To stay safe while walking/riding to and from school:

Always travel in a group.

Walk on the footpath on the right hand side of the road so you face oncoming traffic.

Stay in areas that are well lit.

Stay in view – avoid going into areas that are hidden (and planning trips to avoid such locations).

Be alert – earphones and headphones can reduce your awareness considerably.

If you have a mobile phone, have it turned on and ready to dial an emergency number.

If a passing car stops nearby, never get too close.

Report suspicious behaviour to your parents, school or the police (call 131 444 to report an incident or 1800 333 000 to reach Crime Stoppers), noting number plates of cars and/or clothing or distinguishing features of individuals.

PROSPECTIVE PARENT TOURS 2019 Prospective Parent Tours are conducted regularly by a member of the administration team to provide prospective parents the opportunity to learn more about our programs and to have a closer look at our school facilities. Inclusivity Resilience Respect

Responsibility

On the last Friday of Term 3 all students participated in our ‘Show Your Team Colours Fun Run’. Our course this year incorporated some cross country elements, including three challenging obstacles and the very popular “wet” and “dry” lanes, which students could select from to run through. Our students did any amazing job pushing themselves and showed great resilience by continuing their run throughout the entire 20 minutes. It was great to see everyone in their team colours. Students should now be collecting their fundraising pledges, which can be returned to school this Friday, 18th October. All monies raised will be put towards upgrading our Junior iPads, Senior notebooks, and to purchase new learning software and apps for both. We would like to thank all of our students, their generous families, and our wider school community for continuing to support our fundraising events. Miss Robyn Newman
