INSPIR!NG STUDENTS

It is well known that wealth creation and innovation are best served when firms with interdependent needs are grouped together in clusters (Porter, 1988), that have close spatial proximity and produce network effects. The ob-vious benefits are that resources can be shared and opportunities exploited. A current exemplary example of clustering is 'Silicon roundabout’, where firms are actively seeking to benefit from agglomeration effects. This poster raises awareness of the benefits of inter-intra departmental co-operation as a way to stimulate innovation. The authors explore these issues using ACES faculty as a simile to clustering; i.e. interconnected institutions that compete but also co-operate. A case study using the recent INSPIRING STUDENTS event in Cantor is presented. The event highlights the benefits to ACES of annual activity that enables cross-fertilisation of ideas and exchanges. It also demonstrates that these activities directly support teaching innovation and the student experience.
