Opening scene analysis

The opening scene includes an establishing shot of the Mexico city view and is set at daytime.

Intense Rock music is used as background sound. It produces a fast paced effect and a rough image of the setting

Flashing images and inverted colour shots of the city are used to create a race against time feeling

Panning shots of streets and cars in fast motion, with jump cuts of different city views.

Lots of cut editing is used, to show brief snapshots of the city.

Foreign voiced narrator - The foreign voice Creates an inference the film involves gangs and makes it feel like the audience is aimed at all ethnic groups.

The rock music slowly blends into mellow music with close up shots of the characters. The characters are introduced with dark clothing, parts of there face are covered to create a mysterious effect. This shows a contrast between the busy streets and the mysterious citizens within it.

Close up of objects are shown in slow motion, to emphasize the object in the scene.

Close up shots of characters faces, with serious facial expressions conveys the characters have hardy personalities.

7. Screen grabs City view Flashing effects + Captions 8. Inspirations

Man on fire solely focuses on action shots to show that crime is taking place. The techniques they useto interpret this idea, has influenced me to use them in the movie.

Man on firecreates a race against time feeling, with the speed of the shots and establishing shots of the city view and cars in traffic, this creates an action packed effect in the busy city life which helps the viewer infer the media clip is an action thriller. The furious Angels can use these type of shots to attract the young audience because they may be familiar with the streets, since they have also grown up in these type of areas which can influence them to watch it.

Colour effects are used, with quick snapshots of the characters as an introduction, which creates a bursting colour effect for attention and flashing images to the viewer, it conveys speed of time and infers that they are they are part of a group which has inspired me to include it in the movie, because it introduces each main character and they can be interpreted as a group more clearly.

The Upbeat rock music used inman on fire , adds a lively atmosphere to the clip and suits the speed of the action. It also helps to attract the young audience because the music is urban, which has inspired me to use rock music in the movie because my audience is the young demographic.

The Close up shots and slow motion filming of the characters in dark clothing, makes them look more suspenseful and mysterious. This creates a criminal image and has influenced me to include the same techniques, as it will add more emphasis on the representation of each character as a criminal, so that it suits the sub genre of the movie.

9. That is, if they don't kill each other first.

13. Opening scene analysis

Drum beats as background music is used, to create a pounding sound to show something intense, is taking place.

Extreme close up shots of guns and a clock are shown to interpret a crime scene is set to take place.

The characters touching the objects, remain disguised with dark black clothing for a mysterious and suspenseful effect.

The opening scene is set at night. The streets and sceneries are dark, making it hard to see what is going on.

Them mise en scene is located in a dark, office building.

The music speeds up, when the cops are chasing the group.

Tracking shots and continuity editing are used, so the viewer can analyse and emphasise the racing effect of the cops.

The music beat slows down and the filming shots are slowed down, as a gun is pointed at a cop and is shot. The shooter remains disguised in dark clothing and a full shot of the hand with the gun is shown.

14. Screen grabs

Extreme Close up of gun

Dark clothing

Night scene

Night scene

Mysterious location

15. Inspirations

National security involves cops who are chasing after criminals. It helped me see how the criminals are visually interpreted so that I can also present them similarly, in the movie.

The drum beats suited the action taking place at the most relevant times, which has inspired me to use appropriate upbeat music to suit the movie scenes.

Having the scenes filmed at night and wearing black clothing, helps to add more suspicion and mystery to the crime scene. This can be used effectively towards The furious angels.

16. Reservoir dogs 17. Starring

Harvey Kietel

Tim Roth

Steve Buscemi

Chris penn

Micheal Madsen

Lawrence Tierny

Eddie Bunker

Quen Tarantino

18. Basic information

Writers: Quentin Tarantino

Genre: Crime thriller

Release date: 15 January 1993 (UK)

19. The plot

A gang of thieves carry out an armed robbery on a Diamond warehouse. The police are after them so quickly that they suspect they have a rat in their company. This film starts right before the robbery, with flashbacks to before the robbery, and to the planning of the crime. We are also introduced to the main characters in flashback mode. Plenty of fast action, and plenty of blood and gore.

20. Opening scene analysis

No background music.

Panning shots and a full shot of the table, with all the charcters are shown.

A lot of cross cut editing is used, as they interact.

The characters are dressed sophisticatedly in black suits.

There dialogue includes constant swearing. This shows they look sophisticated, but are actually not.

Medium shots of the charcters communicating and close up shots of their faces are shown to express their facial expressions, towards each other in the group.

The use of smoking, shows that the group are relaxing.

The mise en scene is located in a restaurant.

The scene is set at daytime.

Constant cut edits, are used to jump from each characters face, to another.

There is a large number of members, which conveys that they are part of a group/gang.

21. Screen grabs Close up shots

Full shot of table

Sophisticated clothing

22. Inspirations

The relaxed facial expressions and sophisticated clothing of the gang and the rough way, they communicate, has helped me see the smooth image they create as criminals. I can use these behavioural techniques similarly in the movie, so that the characters appearance as a criminal is perceptible.

Reservoir dogs uses flashback scenes before the robbery, which has inspired me to create flashback scenes in the movie. It creates a build of tension as the crime is being developed and planned, which helps contribute to the sub-genre of a crime thriller.
