Whoa, There! The key to any motif—be it cabin or cowboy—is materials, not patterns. “Go for rusted iron and embossed leather, not horse-patterned pillows,” says Eden Prairie designer Kimberly Herrick. Be sparing with themed things and mix in visual surprises. We like the contrast of cowpoke accents with this crisp Barbara Barry chair. Turn to page 125 for buying info.

ANCHOR YOUR LOOK Interior designer Greg Walsh, principal of Walsh Design Group in Minneapolis, has lots of experience with the “Glam Rock” look—including work in a genuine rock star’s home. The key, he says, is choosing anchor pieces with just a whisper of the motif. “For one home, we used a button-tufted Chesterfi eld sofa with a slightly metallized leather and another anchor piece covered in silvery gray mohair,” he says. Once you have the baseline in place, he says, let the accessories do the heavy lifting. FOR SHOPPING INFORMATION, SEE PAGE 105.

Bright patterns call for cleanWhen using something as showy as a peacock-feather design, the key words to keep in mind are “clean” and “natural,” says Kathy Basil, manager at Hirshfi eld’s Design Studio. “With these porcelain plates, I’m thinking a white, natural fi ber tablecloth, preferably linen, with a long row of white votives down the middle.” On the dining-room walls, Basil imagines a fi ne-fi nish white paint or a natural-fi ber paper with a white mirror. Overhead, suspend a brushed-brass or gold chandelier to highlight the accent color in the feathers. “To fi nish, add in linen napkins with a small monogram in that saturated peacock green,” she says. For buying information for these Magnor plates, see page 105.

If the omelet didn’t fold just perfectly, instructed Julia, tuck in the sides like so and present with fl air. That applies equally to our style at home. Gothic MELODRAMA

Wicked COOL Independent designer and stylist Laurie Luehmann has taken edgy, cool design to a whole new level in her North Loop loft—a place filled with natural curiosities (like a petrified dinosaur egg and various pieces of taxi-dermy). How does she give her place its verve without giving guests the creeps? “It’s all about the contrast of extremes,” she says. She liberally mixes antique silver, elegant china, and dainty pearls with her macabre picks. Find shopping info on page 72.

Flit & Float Silhouettes stir the mind because we are coaxed to imagine what we are not seeing—what is blanked out, says Yasmil Raymond, an art curator at the Walker Art Center. “Silhouettes are sug-gestive gestures,” Raymond says. “Artists use them not to represent, but rather to imply.” By leav-ing us with just silhouetted butterfl y shapes in her four-piece “Butterfl y Clock” for Diamantini & Domeniconi, German designer Susanne Philippson lures us into focusing on ideas of move-ment or fl ight rather than vibrant colors or exotic patterns. ART ON THE FLOOR If you’re going to fall in love with a single thing to dictate the look and tone of a room, try to make that singular “must-have” a floor rug, says Gayle Crummer, owner of Gayle Crummer Interior Design in Minneapolis. “There are an infinite number of paint colors and upholstery fabrics, but there are only a certain number of rug designs to coordinate with.” Once you’ve chosen your signature rug—such as Emma Gardner’s “Whole Baby Fish”—treat it like artwork on the floor. “If you choose a powerful rug design, go for etchings, negative space, or very subtle art on the walls,” says Crummer. See page 118 for buying info.
