SLU Global is a project and unit at the vice chancellors office for information, dialogue,

strategic planning and development of ”Policy for Global Development” (PGU) at SLU

SLU develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources.

surrounding community.

An applied university for agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry, horticulture and aquaculture with strong base in

biological science and veterinary medicine.

Unlike other Swedish universities, SLU belongs to the Ministry of Rural Affaires under the Ministry of Enterprise and

Innovation

PGU at SLUSLU publishes > 2000 international reviewed research articles per year. > 15 % of those are

relating to global development (partners and/or DAC-countries).

PGU carried out at various extent in all 36 departments and units at SLU.

Hundreds of experts can´t be wrong…BUT

SLU Global

has a main committment to catalyzebroader thematic and multidiciplinary

research activities……relating to real world complex challanges

in low income countries

SLU Global

Starting in mid 2012, SLU Global started towork trough four research themes:

Restoration of degraded rural landscapesEfficiency in farming systems

Urban and peri-urban farmingScale issues in relation to food security and

poverty alleviation

During the first year, 2014, SLU Global’s 4 research themeswas the frame for activities for

the SLU – SIANI theme

“Sustainable Agricultural Production and Food Security”

Making 4 workshops the major activity of the year

Workshop #1

“Variations in productivity - causes and effects on food security and on sustainability of cropping

systems”

A one-week workshop in Uganda, used pooled resources also from Foreign Ministry to SLU

• Exploration of productivity differences involving household and research information and simple drones for remote sensing

• The constellation from the workshop has lead to new research funding

• The small-scale household-based method proved feasible

Workshop #2

“Scaling-up strategies – from technology transfer to empowerment with focus on sustainable agricultural production and food security”

A two-day workshop in Uppsala, used pooled resources also from Foreign Ministry to SLU

• Staged dialogue for reflections and recommendations for future development projects on food security and good practices for scaling-up.

• Web-published report and one policy brief under production

• Broad Swedish and international participation around a number of cases

Workshop #3

“The role of trees in water management in complex landscapes ”

A two-day workshop in Uppsala

• Trees for land restoration arecontroversial as to the trade-off for water.

• WS brought together key persons to discuss and articulate severe lack of empiric base for complex landscapes with low tree densities in tropical drylands, not least in Sub-Saharan Africa.

• Foreseen input to SIWI ”Forest and water dialogue” jointlywith Focali in 2015

• Opinion-paper for international review publication and one policy brief under production

Workshop #4

“Urban and Periurban Agriculture in low-income countries”

A one-day workshop in Uppsala

• Scope to identify dilemmas and gaps in knowledge.

• Dialogue for researchers, students, practioners, policymaker.

• Building on literature reviewproduced with ForeignMinistry funding to SLU.

• WS report and policy brief are planned outputs.
