A TALK WITH DR. AYOUB KAZIM

Dr Ayoub Kazim is the Managing Director for TECOM Academic Cluster, Dubai Knowledge Village (DKV) and Dubai International Academic City (DIAC), both part of TECOM Investments, a member of Dubai Holding. He is responsible for strategically steering the education and human resource development clusters and further consolidating their status as the region’s leading centres of excellence for learning and human capital. With experience gained over a period of more than 20 years from working with Dubai Municipality and the UAE University in Al Ain, Dr Kazim has an in-depth understanding of the technical, administrative and academic work environments. In addition, he has been actively involved in research studies and has published numerous articles and technical papers on renewable energy, hydrogen energy, fuel cells, energy policy and economics.

Dr Kazim has successfully steered the two knowledge clusters towards excellence, enabling them to register remarkable growth over the years. He has also encouraged all university campuses that function within the DIAC premises to adopt LEED specifications to cut down on long-term operational costs and lessen the burden on the environment. Under Dr Kazim’s guidance, DIAC highlighted its energy and water conservation measures at the Smart Metering Middle East/ Smart Grids Middle East 2009 conferences in Dubai. He has also ensured that DIAC remains totally committed to evolving as a more environment-friendly institution by reducing carbon emissions, implementing a water conservation program and gradually phasing out halogen lamps from its premises.

Dr Ayoub Kazim holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alabama and a Master’s from the Polytechnic University, New York University. He received his doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Miami in 1998.

Dr. Kazim answered several questions posed by the faculty members regarding renewable energy and energy conservation. In response to the question regarding the role of district cooling system in reducing energy consumption, Dr. Kazim responded that the district (or central) cooling systems, which distribute chilled water or other media to multiple buildings for air-conditioning, have been used in commercial buildings for decades. While district cooling systems are most widely used in downtown business districts and institutional settings, such as college campuses, they offer tremendous benefits to building owners and developers planning large office complexes or mixed-use properties are increasingly favoring this to traditional cooling methods.

While responding to the role of DIAC in adaptation of the green landscaping measure, Dr. Kazim highlighted the fact that the education cluster makes significant utilization of indigenous products. The planting of cactus trees and ‘ghaf’, a native tree that requires little or no irrigation or maintenance, use of additives in the soil for reducing water consumption to 50 per cent and requiring lesser NPK fertilizers are some of DIAC’s vital green-friendly landscaping initiatives. Commenting on the water conservation and recycling efforts adopted by DIAC, Dr. Kazim praised the energy and water conservation measures adopted at DIAC buildings with a current built-up area of 1.4 million sq feet and stressed that these efforts reflect DIAC’s profound commitment to evolving as a more environment-friendly organisation. DIAC Phase-III also consumes 30 per cent less water than even the standards set by US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) as well as use 40 per cent less irrigation water. The savings have been achieved by the installation of ultra-low flow water restrictors in wash basins and dual flush tanks in wash rooms.

Dr. Kazim explained that lack of proper awareness on the development of smart metering in the community coupled with abundance of conventional energy are leading to sluggishness on the measures taken to address smart metering and intelligent energy infrastructure.
