President Barack Obama went before Congress and the nation to address his plan for solving a problem that not only threatens the prosperity and financial security of America, its businesses, and its families, but cuts against the core of who we are as a nation. Right now, tens of millions of Americans are living without health care coverage. Tens of thousands more join their ranks each week. Most of these people are hardworking, middle class Americans. Maybe they lost a job. Maybe they couldn’t keep up with premiums that are rising three times as fast as wages, or maybe their employer had to choose between dropping coverage and closing down shop. • Outcomes . In 2007 and2008, respectively, only 37percent and 39 percent ofcontracts with disadvantagedbusiness enterprise (DBE) goalswere reported as meeting goals. This means that although the

remaining contractors – morethan 60 percent each year didnot meet their goals , theiractions were deemed “goodenough” by MnDOT. LeBron Raymone James wasborn on December 30, 1984, inAkron, OH, to Gloria James, a16-year-old single-momseduced and abandoned byAnthony McClleland, an ex-conwith no interest in parenting.Gloria did the best she could toraise LeBron on her own butthat still meant movingfrequently, living in theprojects, and even temporarily

surrendering custody of her sonuntil she could get her financesstraightened out.

Fortunately, LeBron found asanctuary on the basketballcourt, where he would not onlymaximize his potential, butforge lasting friendships withfour teammates he would playwith from junior high throughhigh school: Dru Joyce III,Romeo Travis, Willie McGeeand Sian Cotton. He was alsovery close to their coach, Dru’sdad, who would serve a criticalrole in shaping his characterduring his formative years as afather figure.

Of course, everyone knowsthat LeBron blossomed into a

basketball phenom who skippedcollege and went straight to theNBA where in 2009 he becamethe youngest player ever to benamed league MVP at the ageof 24. But few are aware of howloyal, humble and unselfish aman he is as well.

To understand why LeBronhas remained so groundeddespite being nicknamed KingJames and being surrounded byall the trappings of overnightsuccess, check out More Than aGame, an upliftingdocumentary directed byKristopher Belman. Thismoving bio-pic chronicles theseven-year sojourn of the FabFive, recounting both theirbasketball exploits and thepersonal challenges each had toface while collectively pursuingtheirs hoop dreams.

Here, LeBron talks aboutthe film as he reflects on lifeand his professional career.

Kam Williams: Hi LeBron, thanks for the time. I’mhonored to have thisopportunity to speak with you. LeBron James: Oh man, thanks for having me.

KW: I loved More Than aGame. Why did you decide tomake this movie about you andyour childhood teammates? LJ: I thought it was time, andthe footage that the director,Kris Belman, had shot wasunbelievable. He followed usaround our whole senior yearfor what was just supposed tobe a ten-minute school project. But after he saw what he hadcaptured on tape, he knew it hadthe potential to be way morethan that. And then when hecame to me with the first littletrailer that he made, I was like,“Wow! I’m on board. Let’smake something big out ofthis.”

KW: Well the finished productis very moving. Obviously, Iwas already well aware of yourachievements on the basketballcourt, but this really relatedyour personal story in a verypowerful way. Congratulations!LJ: Thank you very much. Iappreciate that. My life hasnever been a bed of roses. Ithink now a lot of people aregoing to understand where Icome from and who I am today.

KW: Part of what is soimpressive about you is yourloyalty to your childhoodfriends and your continuedconnection to your roots, whichis something you don’t findwith a lot of other pro athletes.LJ: Well, thank you. I’m very

humbled by the things I’m ableto do on and off the court. I’mgrateful to be in this position, and being able to give backreally means a lot to me.

KW: What would you say haskept you so grounded?LJ: My mother, Gloria James, and my upbringing have keptme grounded. When you’re a

kid growing up in a single-parent household, it sometimesforces you to mature a lot fasterthan you might want. In mycase, I had to become the manof the house very early. Mychildhood was never great. Wemoved from place to place a lot. There were times when we hadno definite place to stay. So, abasic level of security was not

always there. Therefore, whenyou finally make it out, and youbecome who I am today, you’rehumbled by the memories of

those situations. You’re keptgrounded by those reminders

At some point during my collegedays, to my horror, I realized that notevery woman enjoyed shopping. Ithought that a love of shopping wasin every girl’s genetic code.Furthermore I assumed all womenenjoyed trying on clothes andachieving new looks within theirexisting wardrobe. So you canimagine my shock when friendsbegan approaching me and askingfor fashion tips, while confessing

that they did not love or even likeshopping! What!? In the immortalwords of Whitney Houston, “Ohheck to the No!” I would not let thistiny mutation in their DNA codereduce my friends to existence asfashion “don’ts”-I would rescuethem! And that is where the storybegins.

After helping many collegegirlfriends put their best fashion footforward, I decided that this work wastoo important to stop with the collegecrowd. I began helping businesswomen and social butterflies refinetheir looks by doing the shopping forthem. So for those of you who hate

shopping and find it a chore to hit themall, I am going to give you a fewpainless do-it-yourself (DIY)strategies for being fall fashionable-even within a tight budget.

Peek at only two magazines peryearIf you find yourself overwhelmed byall the images you see each month infashion magazines, stop looking.Instead, only buy (or borrow fromthe library) the September andMarch issues. They are the thickestmagazines, filled with great ideas forthe hot fall and spring seasons. Andno, you don’t have to buy those high-priced designer duds, just take noteof the style and go look for thecopycat version at a discountedprice. Target is usually a good placeto start. www.target.com Theyalways feature popular designers

who create low-cost versions ofitems featured on New York’sfashion runways.

Know your assets…and liabilitiesIf shapely calves are your bestfeature, then play them up, don’tcover them up. Opt for knee lengthskirts and dresses which accentuatethem. Have long skirts in your closetthat cover those calves? Get out thescissors and thread (if you haveskills) or get the needed alterations. Also, while you are at it, taper theskirt: pencil (skinny) skirts are hotright now. Another popular trend, draping, is a soft feminine lookwhich can camouflage problemareas (like a thick mid-section).

Make your accessories popSome of the latest hot topics in

fashion accessories are hounds tooth,

plaids, and leopard prints-as well asthe bright neon colors of the eighties.Instead of buying an entire plaidoutfit, select a scarf, hat, or gloves toget that “in the now” look. Inaddition, a chunky necklace willinstantly transform that standardblack blouse and pants. Don’t forgetabout the funky textured andpatterned tights, which look greatpeeking underneath your slim blackskirt!

Phone a friendI know that you have at least onegirlfriend (or guy friend) with greattaste and who loves to shop. Offer topay for lunch (or cook lunch) inexchange for their expertise. Nearlyeveryone can benefit from a secondopinion when it comes to shoppingand it’s always fun to have companywhen doing something that takesyou out of your comfort zone. This fall are you feeling more like a“Fashion Don’t” when you reallywant to be a “Fashion Do?” It’s notas hard as you may think to jazz upyour fall gear. Pace yourself anddon’t feel as though you must buyeverything in one mall visit-and oh

yeah, don’t start at Mall of America(too much, too soon!). Try gettingstarted at a strip mall with a Target, and a TJ Maxx, Kohl’s, orMarshall’s. Use the above simplesteps to help guide you towardmaking the style statement that youalways dreamt about. Enjoy!

You do need a resume, and it hasto be flawless. But its detailsmatter less than ever if you arelooking for work right now. Yourresume today is a reminder for theperson you interview with aboutthings they already know, becausethey likely already know youthrough Facebook, Twitter,LinkedIn, friends of friends orprofessional circles. Do notimagine for a minute that sendingan unsolicited resume to acompany is going to get you a job.It might, but there are other ways, and they are faster and moreeffective.

Like I said, you do need aresume. Write it, polish it, keep itcurrent. But instead of an end-all,it is now a critical tool. Post it

over your computer and log in toLinkedIn, Facebook and thenTwitter. Create or edit your profileaccording to your resume. Get alot of keywords in there, thingsthat might nudge a manager intostaying on your site a little longer.Candidates often ask, Should Iadd a line in the profile indicating“open to new opportunities”? Ifyou are unemployed, you havenothing to lose by putting it outthere.

Join groups that make senseand participate in onlineconversations as often as youcheck in with neighborhood palsor family. This is work and it’sold-fashioned networking, but itguarantees you stay current withothers out there who share yourinterests. When you contributeprofessional expertise, thoughts, plans or ideas that help others, orask a question and follow up onpeople’s responses, then you caninvite people to join your network. They will have some idea aboutwho you are, or will check outyour profile to find out. Thisbrings you, job seeker, to theattention of other people whomight know people who arehiring.

At this point, you may be asked tosend a resume. You’re ready withthe document you’ve alreadycreated. It is consistent with youronline profile, so the hiringmanager calls you in for aninterview. In person, you canprovide additional detail aboutyour experience and expertise.

Another way to get in front ofhiring managers is to start out in atemporary position. Companieswho faced major layoffs a yearago are gun-shy on hiring.Business seems to be picking upin some sectors, but no one wantsto commit to employees just yet.Accept a temp position so thatwhen hiring time comes around, the obvious first hire is already inthe building: you.

People want to hire peoplethey know. Creating a strong, reliable, consistent web presenceis an easy way to introduceyourself to hiring managers longbefore a resume crosses the desk.

I’ll do it tomorrow! Wait until thisT.V. show is over! I’m to busy! Itwill take too much time! I’msleepy!

These are some of the manyexcuses that people use to avoidexercising regularly. Most peopleknow it is important to get someform of exercise, but do not havemotivation to do so. Motivation toexercise differs from person toperson. So what exactly does it take

to get you motivated to move? This article will give readers

some basic ideas that can get themmotivated to exercise just a littlemore. All of the following ideasmay not be for you, but hopefully, you may be able to use at least onemotivational idea.

Workout in 10 minuteincrements – Instead of feeling likeyou have to workout for 30-40minutes at a time, workout forshorter periods. During your lunchbreak, take a 10-minute power walk.Or at some other point in the day, do10 minutes of leg or stomach work.If you do three or four 10-minuteworkouts in a day, you will havegotten in your daily workouts in 10minute sessions.

Imagine getting fine in five –You can do 5 squats at a time insteadof doing many. Whenever you havean extra few seconds, you can do 5squats, or 5 calf raise, or 5 crunches,or even a five-minute jog. If youapply this method 5 times per hour, you can get 25 repetitions done inone hour from a combination ofexercising, or from doing the same

exercise.Clearly define why you want to

exercise – By knowing what yourpersonal motivation is to exercise, you may not compare yourself toothers so often. Do you want to loseweight? Do you want to tone or addmuscle? Are you interested inimproving your cardiovascularhealth? Get to know and understandyour own personal motivation, soyou will be better able to meet yourgoals (Greg Landry, Author andexercise physiologist).

Reward yourself - By givingyourself a reward for all your hardwork, you can do something else tomake yourself feel good. Accordingto Greg Landry, one of his clientsput away $3 every time she workedout and would do something withthe approximate $70 /month shesaved.

Take a picture of yourself – Takea current picture of yourself, andthen every few weeks, take anotherpicture! By doing this every fourweeks you will be able to visuallyenjoy the results of your efforts! You’ll also get praises from others

that will help with your motivationto exercise (Cindy Brotherston,Certified Fitness Trainer).

Keep a journal – Try keeping ajournal monitoring your progress.Record how you feel before andafter your workouts. Write downwhat exercises you like doing. Alsojot down your personal goals on adaily and weekly basis and be sureto go back a read how you felt. Besure to record the good and bad daysas well as the easy and hard ones, realizing it is all normal.Remember, that exercising is notalways easy – quitting is always

easier than starting.Bonus Tip: Surround yourself

with people who believe inexercising and being healthy andjoin them or start your own exerciseclub. Be sure to contact a qualifiedhealth professional before you begina new workout routine.

“You lie!” as the Presidentaddressed a joint session ofCongress recently.

“We Americans are biggerthan that,” she said. “It is all rightto have a lively discussion withdifferences of opinion, but weneed to be respectful andcourteous to others when wecome to the table.”

Brazile’s lecture was entitled“Building a Socially andIntellectually ConsciousCommunity.” The forum washosted by Cynthia J. Fraction andMichael Glirbas, co-chairs of thelecture series.

Brazile recounted her role asa Democratic Party superdelegate in the 2008 PresidentialPrimary Election. She said

relatives and friends often wereupset because she did notdisclose her preferredDemocratic presidentialcandidate early in the race. However, she said, she had aright to thoroughly hear from allcandidates before making a

decision or declaring apreference.

She said she told onecommentator, “I am a woman, so

I like Hillary. I’m Black. I likeObama. And sometimes I’mgrumpy, so I like McCain.”

Today, she is urging all tosupport the President, regardlessof party affiliation, she said.

Brazile shared other politicalinsight as well as personal

information about herself and herfamily. She said she hailed fromLouisiana and could “cook amean gumbo.” She said she likesgood food and encouraged peoplein the audience to email goodrecipes. Brazile said she lost hermother over 20 years ago. Herfather is alive and they are veryclose.

Brazile said she has lived inthe same Baton Rougeneighborhood, in the shadow ofthe Louisiana State Capitol, forthe past 18 years and said she hasno intention of moving.

One of nine children, Brazilesaid she has been involved inpolitics since the age of nine. In2004, she wrote a book about herlife and work in politics entitledCooking With Grease.

their livelihoods or even theirlives. And at the going rates, anyone of us could be one bad breakaway from joining them.

Even Americans withinsurance are paying more thanever before, and getting less; lesscoverage, less security, less peaceof mind for themselves and theirfamilies. Too many of us knowsomeone who has stayed in thewrong job because they’re afraidthey’ll lose coverage if theyleave, or who abandoned thedream of starting their ownbusiness because they can’t affordinsurance. And we have all heardthe heart-wrenching stories ofmen and women who diligentlypaid their premiums only to havetheir coverage dropped when theyneeded it most, leaving thembroke – or worse.

As with so many issues, if thestate of our health care system is acrisis for America, it’s acatastrophe for Black America. On average, African Americansspend a higher percentage of their

income on health care costs thantheir white counterparts. Yetdespite that spending, we alsosuffer from higher percentages ofchronic diseases such as heartdisease, kidney disease anddiabetes. That’s due, at least inpart, to a lack of access to qualityaffordable care.

For too long, Washington hastalked about fixing our brokenhealth care system, only to allow

the same old partisan politics andspecial interest lobbying to blockchange. But this isn’t aDemocratic issue or a Republicanone – it’s a moral imperative. That’s why President Obama hasput forth a health insurancereform plan that borrows goodideas from both sides of the aisle, even from his opponents in boththe primary and general elections.

This plan does three basicthings:

• If you have insurance it willprovide you more stability and

security.

• If you don’t have insurance, itwill provide you affordableoptions.

• And it will slow theunsustainable cost of health carefor American families, businesses, and taxpayers.

If you already have insuranceyou like, nothing in President

Obama’s plan will require you oryour employer to change yourcoverage or your doctor. And let’sbe clear: if you get your healthcoverage from Medicare, thePresident will protect thisprogram that America’s seniorsdepend on. Through this reform,we will begin to close theprescription drug doughnut holesaving thousands of dollars forAmerica’s seniors. Despite someof the scary myths being spread, not a dollar of the Medicare trustfund will be used to pay for thisplan.

At the same time, the

President’s plan will end some ofthe insurance companies’ worstpractices. They will no longer beable to deny you coveragebecause of a pre-existingcondition or to drop or waterdown your coverage because youor someone in your family getssick. They will also be prohibitedfrom capping the total amount ofcoverage you can receive in ayear or a lifetime. And they willhave to abide by yearly caps onout of pocket expenses and fullycover routine checkups andpreventive care – things likecolonoscopies and mammograms.

If you don’t have insurance –and one in five AfricanAmericans don’t – the President’splan will provide you affordableoptions the same way Membersof Congress get them: by creatingan exchange where you canleverage the purchasing power ofa large group to get reasonableprices and choose the optionthat’s best for you and yourfamily. If you still can’t affordcoverage, we will provide you atax credit to help.

The President also believesthat one of the choices in thisexchange should be a public

option. This option would beexactly what it sounds like – onemore choice for Americanswithout insurance. Nobody wouldbe forced to choose it and itwould not affect those whoalready have insurance. But byoperating on a not-for-profit basisand eliminating some of the costsfaced by insurance companies forthings like administrative costsand salaries, it could provide agood deal for consumers whilekeeping pressure on privateinsurers to do the same.

Finally, while insuring moreAmericans will not be withoutcost, President Obama haspromised that he absolutely willnot sign a bill that adds even adime to our deficits. To provehow serious he is about this issue, the bill will contain a provisionthat requires us to come forwardwith more spending cuts if thesavings we promised don’tmaterialize.

Putting an end to the

problems riddling our health caresystem won’t be easy. If it was,Washington would have alreadydone it by now. But it’s also neverbeen more important. Ourfamilies, businesses, and nationas a whole have reached abreaking point, and the status quois unsustainable. So, as PresidentObama said, he might not be thefirst President to take up themantle of health insurancereform, but he’s determined to bethe last. We should all bedetermined to join him.

failed to act against the corporatecrooks that are actually guilty offelonies – including defraudingtaxpayers. Why are companiesthat break the law as a businessstrategy allowed to receivetaxpayer funds? A government

contract is a privilege, not a right. If a company commits a felonyagainst the people of the UnitedStates, then that privilege mustend,” McCollum said.

The ACORN Act is modeledafter H.R. 3571 but respects theConstitution by requiring acorporation to be guilty of afelony before federal funds are cutoff. The bill

Prohibits a corporation with a

felony conviction from receivingany federal contracts, grants, orfunds in any form for five yearsafter the conviction.

Prohibits federal employees orcontractors from promotingcorporate felons for five years.

Prohibits corporate felons orany applicable individual fromcontributing to a candidate forfederal office, to a political party,or to a federal political action

committee for five years. Limits the corporation or any

applicable individual to no morethan $1 million annually forlobbying Congress or federalofficials for a 5 year period.

Provides presidential waiverauthority if federal contracts, grants, and other agreements withcorporate felons are determined tobe in the national interest.

Dagnabbit! I told you all thatBrett Favre should get theaward for Best Actor in aDramatic Series! After all thathullabaloo over his decision tocome play for the Vikings, ittook that dude exactly threegames to make one of the mostexciting (positive) plays that I,and likely many others, canrecall in all my years ofwatching the Vikings.

In the days of the 24-hournews cycle it’s easy to losememory of great sports plays asthey get washed out into the seaof ESPN, but Favre’s winningplay last week versus the SanFrancisco 49ers was so (addyour own effusive adjective)that even his fans from his daysas a Green Bay Packer werewarmed to the core, as prettymuch all football fans were; andthose Wisconsin cheeseheadswere some kinda pissed offabout Favre playing for their

pretty purple rivals. In the early 90s I went

through a major transition whenI was forced to recognize thatMichael Jordan was indeed agreater basketball player thanMagic Johnson. It wasn’t untilJordan and the Bulls ripped thehearts out of Lakers fans in1991 that I put Magic’s #32jersey to the right side of theproverbial mantle, and accepted

that Jordan’s #23 jerseybelonged in the center; in myolder age I can’t reason howanybody can be consideredgreater than Bill Russell withhis 11 NBA Championships.

Favre’s amazing play (I’msure you can find it onyoutube.com if you haven’tbeen beaten over the head withit enough already) didn’t lifthim above my choice forGreatest Quarterback of All-Time, Joe Montana, but Favredid wrestle the title of MostTheatrical Quarterback of All-Time away from Broadway JoeNamath…and he didn’t evenhave to sport a full length furcoat like Namath did.

Favre will be 40-years-old

on October 10. That factcertainly adds to the manyelements of the overall story, but the greater potential storyobviously lies ahead during thereal Minnesota months whenour friend Hawk reigns supremeover your butt, and mine. Sowhere will the Vikings be whenMr. Hawk is in town? I don’timagine that many Vikings fanshave forgotten the 15-1 season

of 1998 that fell short of thewhole nation’s expectations, inthat their super-powered teamdid not reach the Superbowl.

The Vikings have twoplayers, in Favre and running-back Adrian Peterson, that bothhave their names shufflingaround in one of those lotteryball machines as the winner ofthe “Greatest of All-TimeContest” at their respectivepositions. Add to that theheralding of the Vikingsdefensive unit, and you have asimilar sort of expectation asseen in 1998; though obviouslythe 1998 experience serves asthe perfect coolant to over-inflated expectations.

Expectations can wear on

one person, much less a wholefootball team and organization. Thus, there is an absolute needfor calm leadership in order toguide the ship through thecertain choppy waters that lieahead. And so once again, allroads lead back to the center ofthe theatrical football universe,Brett Favre. Favre has been totwo Superbowls, and wasvictorious in 1997. Favre holdsmany of the forefront records ofquarterback performance, but itis his experience as a deal-closer in the Superbowl thatbrings the most hope to theVikings faithful. Getting withinshouting distance of aSuperbowl is not the Vikingsproblem, but getting theSuperbowl to holla back with aninvitation is.

If Favre can pull-off aSuperbowl appearance, maybeeven a Superbowl win, especially while donning apretty purple helmet, thenmany, including myself, willhave to rest their cases for theGreatest Quarterback of All-Time.

For those who aren’tfootball fans I wouldrecommend cheering for thelocal economy through cheeringfor success in this wholewhirlwind, purple, sportingsaga. Wow! Brett Favre can

even stimulate the economy! Isthere anything he can’t do?!

I’ll say it again: Brett Favreand Prince; in full length furcoats, standing in a Run DMC

pose. Even if the Vikings don’tmake it to the Superbowl, thatphoto would make it all worthit.
