Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Day – January 21, 2017 On January 21, in front of a sell-out crowd at Pauley Pavilion who came to see UCLA take on the Arizona Wildcats, former UCLA and NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was honored for receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom—the highest honor a civilian can receive—as well as for his lifetime of giving back to the myriad causes he has spent his life supporting. After being presented with a framed commemorative photo by Chancellor Gene Block and Athletic Director Dan Guerrero, Kareem spoke to the crowd about not only the importance athletics had in his life, but stressed how his UCLA education gave him the tools necessary to meet the challenges he has faced during his lifetime. It was a fitting tribute to one of the most accomplished individuals UCLA has ever produced.
