By Arthur Richardson F latrock - Near enough wasn’t quite good enough last week- end for the E1 team. Down 4-0 after the first innings, we managed to claw our way back to 8-9 - which was quite a feat - but were unfortunately unable to get ahead of North Ryde by the time the umpire called Game. Our batters didn’t get a great deal of opportunities to hit as we had a large number of BBs - so we had to get home the hard way in most cases, with only 2 RBIs - another one from Tanya, one from Tony. Clay Arnold stealing third base showed how it is done with speed that was reminiscent of an angry grizzly bear. We suffered from more errors than usual and that proved quite costly for us - and frustrating for the pitchers. Clay had few near misses but was incredibly agile behind the plate yet again and cov- ered his ground well. Fab O Fabio. Alas though the moral of the match is that we need to practise our infield work and keep those legs together. One upside of the match was that the wraps were taken off Spud and he was shown to the mound. He pitched extremely well and was parsimonious in terms of the number of opportunities he gave to the opposition to get him away. His deceptive pace and wonder- ful variety proved more than a match for the North Ryde boys as he had only 1 run hit against him. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to leave the ground in such a great state – champions indeed. n

E1 - RUMBLE At thE Rock!

By Arthur Richardson

Flatrock - Near enough wasn’t quite good enough last week-end for the E1 team. Down 4-0 after the first innings, we managed to claw our way back to 8-9 - which was quite a

feat - but were unfortunately unable to get ahead of North Ryde by the time the umpire called Game.

Clay had few near misses but was incredibly agile behind the plate yet again and cov-ered his ground well.

His deceptive pace and wonder-ful variety proved more than a match for the North Ryde boys as he had only 1 run hit against him.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to leave the ground in such a great state – champions indeed. n

Flatrock Tips

Please remember Flatrock is our home ground and the continued use of it depends on All oF us taking pride and ownership in it. Every player is as responsible as the Coaches and Managersinmaintainingitsupkeep.

Below are a few tips to keeping the ground in top notch condition.1.Plentyofdirtneedstogobackontothe ground after every game. We wear it down with time and need to keep adding dirt back in to build it up.2.Rakethebasesandthebaselinestowards the centre to build them up. Wewantwatertorunoff,notpuddle.3.Indryweather,addwater.simply raking sand/dirt back on won’t achievemuch.Inparticular, thebatter’s box at home plate and the pitcher’s mound need to be packed down with a mud slurry that can set. The base paths need to be watered so that the raked dirt settles and packs. For those playing the sunday game – lots of water!4.Bothdugoutsneedtobecleanedout,thebinsemptiedandthenlocked.5. BAD BEAR DAY FoR B2s

By Craig Eggleton

By John Thompson

Gannan Park – The Bears have a che-quered record against the Korean-import dominated Ryde Eastwood,

a fact we had in the front of our minds lead-ing in to the match. The first frame ended on a positive note, with the Bears taking a 1-0 lead following controlled, smart hitting quickly supported by precise fielding in ev-ery position. Both would follow us through the game, the former resulting in two K2s the whole match, the latter keeping our er-ror tally to two.

The second inning quickly saw the Bears take a 2-0 lead before the runs dried up for two digs. Lucky for us, Dave Fathers controlled our defence from the mound, finding more corners than a machine spe-cifically programmed to locate corners. After three shutout innings, Ryde man-aged to string several hits together to level the scores at 2-2. With two runners on, we brought on Jez “Nobel Peace Prize” Markham to close out the inning, a role to which he is no stranger. Jez successfully stranded both runners to get the Bears back in the dugout.

The Bears’ offence couldn’t reproduce the same vigour in the field in the fifth, with three taking the plate only to be promptly sat back down after Ryde intro-duced their fireball closer. This followed suit when we took to the field again. Jez is currently searching the Yellow Pages for a chiropractor after snapping his neck on a four bagger which gave them a 3-2 lead.

The least said about this game the better so this will be brief.

Bears V Greenway at the Rock, 1st inning Greenway score 11 bears score 1, game over…..!!!!!! It wasn’t actually but that’s how it felt and while we all know it’s not over until the fat lady sings this game was dead and buried early on.

The final score read Greenway 16 – 2, the only highlight for us if there was one was Ed Blackall coming on and fanning 5 of their batters.

Good thing is there’s always next week and I’m sure this bunch of Bears will fight back. n

Andrew Grillo has officially commenced his City to Surf training, running a kilome-tre in left field to find the ball.

We knew that with fading light, the sixth would be the only chance we’d have to snatch it back. Not only would we need to quickly match the pace of the new hurler with the sticks, we’d need to then fend off a fast finishing Ryde attack. Dave Fathers managed to turn a 1-2 count into a base on balls, who then advanced to second on a stolen base. Doyle showed that leadoff hit-ters can go deep, slugging a triple to score Dave and level the scores. This brought your humble bard up to the plate. After taking the first two strikes to get his eye adjusted to the fading light, he managed to lob a high fastball into deep left field to score a run and put the Bears back ahead. Two quick sacrificial outs later, and we were taking the field for the last time.

Jez decided to keep the game interest-ing for all involved by gifting wrapping a triple to the Ryde leadoff. What followed showed the true grit and mettle that the blackcaps can bring. Clever pitching, sup-ported by coolheaded fielding turned that triple into a LOB with three straight infield outs. Bill James, famed baseball statisti-cian, calculated that 80% of all leadoff tri-ples end up scoring. He obviously didn’t consult with our scoresheets.

Celebratory beers soon followed, as we revelled in the much needed W. All in all, a great day for the Bears. n

D2 BEARs cRAsh At LAst tURn on EMotionAL RoLLERcoAstER

By Michael Smart

M ajors Bay - As a brilliant au-tumn sun glinted across the undulating prairie known as

Majors Bay Oval, the Artoos prepared to confront the last-placed Wests Boom-ers 5. Unbeknownst to us all, this game would have more twists than Hitchcock’s “Psycho”, more hitting than “Rocky III”, and ultimately more tragedy than “King Lear” (although I hasten to add that nobody died and there was at no time a threat to the Monarch.)

The Bears posted early runs in the first and second, but let the wayward Boomers pitcher off the hook with some careless baserunning errors. The Boomers returned fire, getting 4 in the first and another 3 in the second on the back of solid hitting by them and poor glovework by us. Up 7 to 2, the Boomers went into cruise con-trol mode, bringing on their experimental pitcher for what they hoped would be a walk in the park.

A couple of errors, a hit to Stoney and a HBP to Simon saw us retrieve a few runs and load the bases in the 3rd. Mike doubled to left-center, clearing the bases, and when Harry knocked him home, we’d batted around and surged ahead 8-7. From there our defence tightened and we gave up only 1 in each of the 3rd and 4th innings. Craig doubled Stoney home from 1B to level things up again. Those of you familiar with our player profiles will understand what an enormous hit is required to achieve this outcome. (Reminder to coach: refill oxy-gen bottle.) Our fourth inning defence was

aided by a rare pickoff at 1B. The runner subsequently failed the RBT conducted by their first base coach.

Finally in the top of the 5th, the Bears tore through the Boomers defence as if it were a picnic basket. We plated 3 thanks to some walks and hits to Harry, Stoney and David. With the clock ticking down, we started to worry about batting too long to get a result. Rather than go for the jugular, we opted to declare and chase the win.

We took that 3 run lead into the bottom of the last, but couldn’t hold it. Those damn prairie dogs kept sticking their heads up to deflect routine grounders. When the dust had settled, we were gone 14-12. Our first loss of the season sees us drop back to a tie for 2nd place, one game out of first. The whole D2 competition is as tight as a drum, with only one and a half games separat-ing competition leaders Wests Boomers 6 from cellar dwellars West Boomers 5 (still in last despite beating us). Interpolating, that makes us West Boomers 5.8 or some-thing. Hopefully the news will be better next week. n

…AnD BAck to chAMps AGAin:E2’s cLoBBER noRth RYDE 17-6

By Mark Holman

Flatrock - Having had the day from hell in the previous round, the E2 Bears were keen to make amends,

especially on our first game of the season on the new look Flat Rock diamond. Mike Nesbitt on the mound was doing magic stuff and the Rams went three up, three down. Two strikeouts and a great piece of fielding from short stop Matt Manning served notice that the Bears meant business.

In response, the Bears came out swing-ing, and in what seemed very shot order, banged on six runs. Whereas the previous week’s batting and baserunning had been pretty patchy, this time everyone contrib-uted, we were really patient, looking for the right pitch to hit, taking the walks on offer and just doing it right.

The second innings was more of the same. North Ryde managed a double off Mike, but the other three went down to strikeouts for no addition to the scoreline. Bottom of the second saw the bats blaz-ing whitehot. We were able to take full advantage of Flat Rock’s long back net, with wild pitches allowing runners to steal bases and home at will. The sight of Gary Graham in full flight towards home was reminiscent of that wonderful Discovery Channel series on the Serengeti rhinoceros – it brought tears to my eyes. In the end

we batted the whole order plus a few and scored nine runs.

The Rams were not going to give up however. A few good hits and one field-ing error saw a facesaving run get home. Although the Rams managed to get a few more runners on base, the pitching and fielding tightened up and no more damage was done. Generally there were few field-ing errors. As one motivational speaker in the post match strategy session observed, that is generally what happens when your pitcher is striking out the other side. Given we were now 14 runs in front at the middle of the third, the steal was off. Nevertheless a further two insurance runs were scored.

The top of the fourth saw Mike Nesbitt pulled and Jonathan ‘Pancho’ Reyes take the mound, having done a brilliant job be-hind the plate to then. Johnno’s stuff turned out to be a little more user friendly and so the fielders finally had to do a bit of work. There were some good plays, including a great team relay from the outfield to short to third to gun down an ambitious attempt to squeeze two bases out of a single hit. However the Rams did manage to get a bit of respect with five runs scored.

At that stage the blue realised it was beer o’clock and we were not going to argue. A good day at the park. n

GREEnWAY sLAY B1 BEARs By Joshua Cuthbertson

Flatrock - The B1 Bears returned to Flat Rock on Sunday after suc-cessful road trips in round’s two

and three, and were hopeful of keeping the winning streak going against joint-leaders Greenway. The absence of Michael Bro-mley due to the birth of daughter Hazel (congratulations MB and Mel) somewhat weakened the offense, but there should still have been enough in the tank to strike some fear into Greenway’s hurlers, including our Venezuelan recruit Davey, who was a wel-come addition to the starting line-up.

Unfortunately for the Bears though, no one would be dancing “the joropo” (Vene-zuela’s national dance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joropo) at the end of this contest. It’s tempting to try and write this piece entirely in Spanish, but my understanding of the language is “muy pequeño” (very small). Muy pequeño however, does sum up the size of the strike zone enforced by the umpire during this one.

The zone was applied equally to both teams though, and so can’t be used as an excuse. Jeff and KC toiled on the mound, but the Bears allowed no less than 16 runs

before an hour had even elapsed, effectively killing off what should have been a much closer contest. The tight strike zone was unforgiving to errant pitching and bloop hits by Greenway too often dropped into right field. One wonders what might have been had the Bears taken some difficult early chances in the field and/or managed to score more than 2 in the bottom of the first with loaded bases (the scribe grounded out to end the inning), but the Bears were never really in the contest and it was a game of few positives.

Some solid hitting and aggressive base running in the final dig added a degree of respectability to the scoreline. Luis’s dou-ble to left-centre was memorable, while several patient Bears exploited the umpire’s “diminuto” strike zone to draw multiple walks during the game. It’s difficult to take too much else out of the contest though. An 18-7 loss looks ordinary no matter which way you try to spin it.

We move on to this weekend’s contest against the Tigers, and we look forward to the challenge of redeeming ourselves against Greenway next time around. n

Coach Menzies lead the team to a glorious victory today. Slobbo on the hill did a fine job until his arm tightened up. Trav got two hits. Both at the plate. One by the ball and one by the catcher who barreled him over onto his head. The usual suspects got hits today, before Rick came on to close. A picture tells a thousand words, so check them out.
