20 Surprising Things Everyone Forgets

About The Ford Mustang

#02 - A Ride In An Elevator

Source: Hotcars.com Source: Hotcars.com

In 2014, Mustang celebrated its 50th anniversary with a drive to the top of the

Empire State building. Well, it wasn't so much a drive, but more of a ride in a

freight elevator. A converble, yellow, 2015 Mustang GT was disassembled into

6 pieces, freighted up 86 floors, and reassembled on the observaon deck.

This wasn't just in memoriam of the Mustangs 50th anniversary, but was also a

tribute to its World's Fair debut. The incredible feat took weeks of planning and

preparaon.

The team of workers even built a replica freight elevator to ensure that all the

pieces would fit, and wouldn't max out the weight capacity. The crew had to

accomplish the enre task in only 6 hours.

1994 Mustang GT Convertible

Owners: Jim & Janis Miller, Broken Arrow, OK

Laser Red/White

The mustang GT was Motor Trend’s car of the year for 1994 and the car featured on the cover was a laser red/white convertible. We purchased this car from the original owners in 2000 and it’s been with us ever since.

The car was stolen from our garage in 2003 during a break-in at our home and when it wasn’t recovered in a couple of days the police detective told us we would likely never see it again (at least in one piece). About a week later, as our hope was fading, we got a call from the police that someone reported a car matching our car’s description had been parked unattended in an industrial park for several days. We rushed to the address and sure enough it was our mustang.

A quick inspection revealed some missing aftermarket electronics and some scratches on both the front and rear bumper covers. We were very relieved that the damage wasn’t worse, but then on closer inspection we discovered that the top didn’t function properly. Apparently the thieves wanted to put the top down and didn’t know that in order for the top to be raised or lowered you have to have the emergency brake on. They forced the top down by hand which damaged the steel frame and stretched the canvas to the point of needing replaced. Although the thieves were never caught, the police surmised that it was kids who just want-ed to joy ride.

The cost of the top repairs was shockingly expensive, and added to the price of the missing electronics made for a pretty expensive insurance claim. A lengthy bat-tled ensued with the insurance company who wanted to total the car even though it was still in pristine condition. Their argument was that the cost to repair was more than the (book) value of the car. While they came up with a very low value on the car, they couldn’t substantiate that it was based on comparable cars. We began an extensive internet search to find comparable cars. We were able to find a few good comps and eventually the insurance company capitulated and agreed for pay for the repairs. It’s been with us ever since, just turned 26 years old, looks as good as it did brand new, and as of this writing has 45,137 original miles.
