You may be a winner! Random monthly drawings picked from the hat of New & Renewing Members receive a FREE Blues CD.
Recipient of theKeeping The Blues Alive Award forBlues Organization of the Year 1998
Hello NBN members and friends.
The leadership of the organization would like to thank the committee members and volunteers that planned and participated in the Hampton Acoustic Blues Revival. Our good friend Tommy Parker was on hand for the guitar workshop, and all of the local and national acts were very well received by a record-breaking attendance. Jackie Merritt worked very hard to make all of this happen. Thanks, Jackie! The big winner of the night was Bob Hickey. Bob won tickets to see Jackie Scott & the Housewreckers the night before; became a member of the NBN, then won the JR Johnson Bottle Slide Resonator Guitar at the Hampton Acoustic Blues Revival raffle. This guy does not have the blues right now. Welcome to the club, Bob. We hope to see you at another event soon.
Be sure to mark your calendar for the annual Bayou Boogaloo, which is scheduled for the weekend of June 22-24 at Town Point Park in Norfolk. The NBN has been provided a tent and will be recruiting volunteers to pour beer on Saturday the 23rd. Be sure to sign up early by visiting the website. Our volunteer coordinator will be contacting members that have expressed an interest in festival participation. Thank you in advance for your help. The NBN will be selling some “Vintage” T-Shirts at incredible closeout prices, so stop on by the tent, bring some friends, and sign up some new members.
Have you checked out the website lately? Jeff Miller has been working on a variety of features that are designed to improve the sharing of events and information. Check out the “Blues Connect” feature and get ready for the 2012 IBC Challenge, which has already begun to sign up bands for the competition – our winners representing NBN in Memphis in early 2013.
In this issue of the Blues News, I would like to feature the guitar player and songwriter from Houston, Texas, Mark May. After touring with Dickey Betts and Great Southern, Mark is currently touring with his band that features himself and another guitarist that showcase an incredible dual guitar attack. His latest album, In Texas Live, has received great reviews by BluesBlast Magazine and others. Mark has played with a band formerly known as Mark May & the Agitators (great name) and released a couple of albums with them, but my personal favorite is his release Doll Maker. Mark is a lead guitarist with a Southern-Fried sound and jazzy technique that expands beyond the traditional blues. I believe that I first heard of Mark May on the radio station WFOS-FM 88.7 one afternoon. As usual, I promptly called Jerry Carter to find out some details about the album and the artist, and headed over to Birdland to improve my CD collection.
Welcome to all of the new members that have signed up recently, our renewing members, company members, and to our corporate sponsors. Your support is very important as we strive to bring quality to your Blues experience.
See you around town at an NBN event in the near future.

RIP Iverson Minter AKA Louisiana Red March 23, 1932-February 25, 2012It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of one of the greatest and most beloved traditional blues artists. Louisiana Red died at a hospital in Germany after a few days in a coma brought on by thyroid imbalance. He was 79.
Born Iverson Minter in Bessemer, Alabama on March 23, 1932, Louisiana Red had been living in Germany since 1981. His music was strongly influenced by Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins and Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup. It was blues master Muddy Waters, himself, who picked him up at the Chicago station when Red first arrived in 1950 to record for Chess Records. That night, Muddy took him to the Zanzibar club to hear the Waters’ band play, which inspired the song “At the Zanzibar” on his first Ruf CD. In a career that spanned six decades, Louisiana Red also recorded for Atlantic, Roulette, Glover and Tomato Records, among many others. In 1983, he won the W.C. Handy (now Blues Music) Award as “Best Traditional Blues Artist,” and toured consistently until his recent illness.
Louisiana Red’s last two CD releases on Ruf Records were Back to the Black Bayou (2009), and Memphis Mojo (2011). Both CDs showcased Louisiana Red in a classic blues atmosphere, backed by producer Little Victor’s hand picked band, along with such special guests as Kim Wilson & Bob Corritore on harmonica, and Dave Maxwell on piano. Memphis Mojo was recorded in Memphis right after Red was awarded for his achievements as “Acoustic Artist of the Year” at the Blues Music Awards in May 2010. “Louisiana Red was a powerful down-home blues artist who could channel his teachers into his own heartfelt musical conversation, delivered with such moving passion and honesty that it would leave his audiences indelibly touched,” said musician and friend Bob Corritore upon hearing of Red’s passing. “He was a fine singer with a distinctive voice, and an amazing guitarist who could play all of the traditional blues styles and excelled as one of the world’s greatest slide guitarists. He could create moods and textures, both musically and spiritually, and had the ability of falling so deep into his own songs that he would go to tears, making his audience cry with him. That was the gift of this great artist.”

Chess Records Founder’s Son Slams Studio Owners: ‘We Were Dissed’
Marshall Chess is the son of the late Leonard Chess, the driving force at Chess Records. He has kept silent about the developments at his father’s historic studio at 2120 S. Michigan. Until now. The space, where Etta James first sang and where the Rolling Stones recorded in 1964, re-opened in 1997 as a museum and headquarters for Blues Heaven Foundation, which owns and operates the facility. The non-profit foundation was founded in 1980 by Chess songwriter-producer Willie Dixon.
But the Chicago landmark is falling apart and visitors are down. In October, Jacqueline Dixon, the foundation’s executive director and Dixon’s daughter, told the Sun-Times she would “consider” changing the name from Blues Heaven to a more identifiable Chess Studios — like Motown in Detroit and Sun Records and the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis, Tenn. “The whole Chess family was taken out of the picture,” Chess said from his home in upstate New York. “If you want to talk hip-hop, we were dissed. I mean, they took our name off the building. “I would buy the building if they would sell it and I would run it the right way. I know the money goes to charity [Blues Heaven], but I could tell them how to make that a giant tourist attraction — and a profit. I would make a deal with a Chicago mobile recording company, rebuild the room upstairs, run the wires to the street and start hiring the studio out to bands. There’s an empty lot next door and they could do like they did in Memphis [at Sun Records] with a restaurant with music.“And Chicago has much more tourism than Memphis.” Marie Dixon, 74, is president of the Blues Heaven Foundation and the widow of Willie Dixon. She said, “Marshall hasn’t made a donation so we could even restore the building properly. Is Marshall willing to help us put the studio back in but not become my partner? Phil [Chess, Marshall’s uncle] made a small donation in ‘94 or ‘95. But the building is sagging. It is sinking. One of the dreams of my lifetime is to get a studio back in there, but I need a lot of help. I don’t know how to write a grant. “I’m not trying to cut the Chess name out. They let it go out. We mention the offices of Leonard and Phil Chess on every tour. I purchased that building in a demolition stage. I came in from the West Coast and saved that building.“Where would the Chess name had gone if they had torn it down, or not made it a landmark?” The 2120 S. Michigan building was designated a city landmark in 1990. Marie Dixon bought the two-floor terra cotta building in 1993. She provided
more than $400,000 of the initial $650,000 startup costs. She then donated the building to the Blues Heaven Foundation. Willie Dixon died in 1992.Marshall Chess confirmed he has not donated to Blues Heaven. “I was highly insulted,” said Chess, 70. “At one point I was there with my cousin Terry. We were taking photos out in front of the building. We went in and the guy wanted to charge us admission. “But by the time I turned 50 I learned that sometimes it’s better to keep your mouth shut.” And then Chess continued, releasing years of frustration. He said, “More creativity came out of 2120 than any other place in the history of Chicago. It wasn’t just Chuck Berry and the blues. We had black comedy artists. We had amazing jazz. Rev. C.L. Franklin, Aretha’s first album. The Record Row studios that ground out stuff dried up after Chess left. Otherwise R. Kelly and Kanye West would have been on Chess, no doubt about it.” The 2120 S. Michigan building was a magical spot for the Chess brothers. They purchased the former auto parts warehouse in 1956, and the glory days ran until 1967, when they moved to a bigger space at 320 E. 21st St. “That building is our family’s history,” Chess said. “We never thought it would have been turned into Blues Heaven, with the Chess letters taken off. We went to the landmark ceremony. We were never consulted. It was a great honor, but they ruined the soul. They remodeled it like it was from another era. I didn’t want to say anything because the landmark guy was there and they still did a nice job.” Chess and his uncle Phil tried to purchase the original Chess studio cast aluminum letters that had been transferred to the label’s last stop on East 21st St. They asked the Dixon family to restore the letters on the 2120 S. Michigan space. It never happened. Chess said he last spoke to Marie Dixon when Martin Scorsese’s 2003 PBS blues documentary “Godfathers and Sons” was being made in Chicago. “Marie loves Phil and me,” he said. “She hugged us in that documentary. But I put feelers out numerous times about buying the building. After I sold [the music publishing company] ARC, I thought this would be a great project. I didn’t care about money, it could all go to a blues charity.” Dixon uses royalty income to help keep Blues Heaven Foundation alive. Willie Dixon wrote Muddy Waters’ “Hoochie Coochie Man” and Howlin’ Wolf’s “Back Door Man,” among hundreds of others. “But royalties are not enough to restore the building the way in which it needs to be restored,” she said. She would not disclose Blues Heaven finances.
“What can I say?” Chess asked. “My family’s gone. [Phil Chess is 90 years old.] I would love to get involved, but if I put my name on it I want it to be the best. Why would I want it to be second-rate?”(SOURCE: suntimes.com)

The Nighthawks have announced that their founding leader, Mark Wenner, has undergone successful heart bypass surgery and is expected to make a complete recovery.
Because of the operation, Mark will stay off the road for approximately six weeks while he recovers, and the band has postponed the affected dates.
The Nighthawks are expected to resume touring the end of May or early June. The Nighthawks debut CD for Severn Records, Damn Good Time, is scheduled for release on May 15, and the band had already scheduled a number of shows around the country to support its release.
Damn Good Time is the follow-up to The Nighthawks’ Last Train to Bluesville, which garnered the band its first-ever Blues Music Award from the Blues Foundation as Acoustic Blues Album of the Year in May 2011.

INTERVIEW WITH ANTHONY ROSANO - BY JACK CAMPBELL
7MAY/JUNE 2012 • www.NatchelBlues.org
Where were you born? In a hospital. When did you move here? I moved to Norfolk in 1996. What is your day job?Well, I don’t really have one. I’m working real hard to play music full time. I do some odd jobs here and there, but not if I can help it. Are you a family man? Wife? Kids?Yes sir, I have a beautiful wife who is very supportive and two awesome daughters. At what age did you pick up the guitar? The first time I was about nine and garbage picked some cheap electric that I strung with fishing line. I would play like the “Batman Theme” and “Smoke On The Water.” Then when I was thirteen, my Mom and Dad bought me a real one for Christmas with a little Gorilla amp, and I drove them nuts pretty quick. And you’ve made a few guitars?Yeah, I make cigar box guitars. They are usually 3- or 4-strings, different pickups and such. I try to let each one be different, like writing a song. What band do you currently gig with? And how many nights a week do you gig on average?I have a few things going on. I play with a local cover band called The River Boyz. We do the standard Tidewater set, but try and bring our own thing to the tunes. I have also been doing a lot of acoustic gigs and I’m real excited about this new blues band that I’m putting together. It’s myself and two other guys -- sort of the power trio type thing, but we have some REALLY good guest musicians that sit in with us. So one night it could be a 3-piece band and the next a 6-piece band. The players are amazing and things are starting to open up for us. On average between all that I probably gig four nights a week. Do you have any favorite places to play?Anywhere really. If the crowd is responsive and the club treats you with respect, that’s all I need. Who are your biggest guitar influences?Muddy Waters, Rory Gallagher, Johnny Winter...I like players that play raw and just give everything they got regardless of theory knowledge or stuff like that. Then there’s the three Kings, Albert Collins. This young guy from England, Scott McKeon, is real good. Hendrix...I could fill the page. What about some of your favorite bands through the ages?Definitely Led Zeppelin. “Since I’ve Been Loving You” was my first brush with the blues, as was the whole first Zeppelin album. Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, Derek & The Dominos. I grew up liking most of the British bands that thought they were blues bands. Free, Bad Company.
Who are you listening to these days?JJ Grey & Mofro is on heavy rotation in the Rosano household. Anders Osborne’s American Patchwork is amazing. I like Gary Clark Jr., and the new Tab Benoit record is killer, too. Was there one individual that helped you more than any other? Say through lessons, inspiration, or tips?Well, I never took lessons, but I would have to say my cousin’s ex-husband. I guess he’s my ex-cousin in law. He played drums, and when I was playing for like a month he made me join his band. They were all older, like in their twenties, and I didn’t think I could hang but he was always encouraging. I wasn’t treated like the punk kid that I was. I learned then that the way to progress quick is jam with people who are above your experience level. Where does your songwriting inspiration come from?Life. Anything you’ve written recently?I just put up an acoustic song on ReverbNation. It is something I wrote thinking about a friend who is no longer with us but is sorely missed. I also have some other tunes I’m working on for the blues band. How many hours per week do you typically dedicate to practicing, writing, or learning new songs? As much as I can. I have guitars all over my house and try and write all the time. I don’t really practice scales or anything, I just play. Is there anything surprising about Anthony Rosano that most people wouldn’t know?I think the Bee Gees are a good band...maybe too good. If you had one tip to give a young guitar player, what would that be?Play as much as you can with other people. Music is a language and you only get fluent when you have conversations with other musicians...and be yourself. Wait, that’s two things. They are tied for being the most important tip. If you had a magic wand and could improve the local music scene, what would you change?I would like to see more of the big clubs embrace Blues Music and original music in general. There are lots of talented people in this town and it seems harder and harder to walk into a place and hear original stuff.

Blue friday at the belmont Recap - Mike HiltonNBN was offered by Sea Level/Tidewater Arts Outreach to put on a blues show during the week of the Singer Songwriter Emerging Artist Competition, and Natchel’ Blues Network’s folks stepped up and provided attendees with a varied range of blues styling and dynamics.
Regional recording artist M.S.G.-the Acoustic Blues Trio started the night off with a great set showcasing their original songs of the Piedmont Acoustic style. Fans were packed to the stage dancing and feeling the vibe from these very accomplished artists.
Herbie D & The Dangermen were up after the break, bringing a more electric sound to their Appalachian/New Orleans style blues. As soon as the first song started the mood of the crowd became lively as the local dance group - Dirt Cheap Blues Dance Club led by instructor Jeff Miller - enhanced the atmosphere with great dancing and amazing moves. Herbie D’s vocals and guitar work filled the venue with a sound that made even the most casual attendee move forward to catch their set.
Tim Morgan & The Mojo Brothers capped off the night with some lowdown, funky, house-rocking blues. Tim Morgan, wielding his Strat, mesmerized the crowd with his slide work and vocals while punching out songs of Muddy Waters and showcasing their original songs as well.
Tim is a veteran of the International Blues Challenge as a solo entry, so this was a treat to see him with the full compliment of his band.
Thanks go out to the Belmont and Jill Berch-Meeker for providing this great venue in the heart of Ghent. Thanks to Tidewater Arts Outreach’s Kelly Murphy and Mary Ann Toboz for the opportunity and alliance in this venture.
Thanks to Jack Campbell for emcee work during the band setup breaks. Thanks go out to NBN’s own Herbie Desseyn and Lynn Allred for doing a great job organizing this event and to the whole Board of Directors for their leadership and presence. P

MAY CALENDARBlues CD Reviews - Jack CampbellLLOYD JONESHighway Boundlloydjonesmusic.comwww.underworldindierecords.com
If you have never been to Portland, Oregon you may have never heard of Lloyd Jones. Out there he is nothing short of a legend. His songs have been covered by Joe Louis Walker, Clarence Gatemouth Brown, and Coco Montoya. He has won over 30 local awards in Portland and Seattle, a Lifetime Achievement Award from
the Cascade Blues Association, and was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame in 2007. So you can see he is highly praised in his own backyard. He has also shared the stage with a veritable Who’s Who of national blues recording artists.
Jones’s style has been described as swampy, “stinkier than year old cheese,” a raw growl, and a virtuoso finger picker. He has appeared solo, in duos, and with his full band called “The Lloyd Jones Struggle.” Highway Bound showcases his solo acoustic side with the help of friends Charlie Musselwhite and Curtis Salgado on harmonica on two different cuts. He has only two original songs on this effort. The balance is a collection of dignified tributes to some classic old blues tunes. I like them all, but my favorites would have to be: “Ice Cream Man” (which was written by John Brim way back in 1953), “No More Crying” and “Travelin’ On” (the two Jones original), and “Careless Love” (originally done by W. C. Handy).

Blues CD Reviews - Brian “The Bluesman” BeachumBIG JAMES & THE CHICAGO PLAYBOYSThe Big Payback (Live)Blind Pig Records BPCD 5143www.blindpigrecords.com
When I first listened to The Big Payback (Live), I had to move the furniture back in place in my living room. You see, I’d cleared out the place to make room to dance! You can’t help it with this CD. You can’t keep still, keep seated, and keep from shakin’ a tail feather with this one! If you do, you need to seek medical
attention, quick. Okay, I’ve given away way too much up front.
Big James Montgomery and his big horn band, The Chicago Playboys, have put together a wonderful collection of blues, funk and soul on one live CD that is a party from start to finish. From the screaming horns and Big Man Montgomery’s vocals on the opening tune, “The Blues Will Never Die,” this up-tempo number just rips. They follow that up with the title cut, a James Brown classic, “The Big Payback.” Now, it takes guts to take on a James Brown cut, but Big James & The Chicago Playboys do it mighty fine with their own saucy funk. One bad bass line right over a mean guitar rhythm with the ever-present horns, just to add the punch. Add Big James vocals and you’ve got it. Add some other top cuts like the horn-heavy Otis Clay classic “Trying To Live My Life Without You,” the Magic Sam classic “That’s Why I’m Crying,” and the Big James original “Low Down Dirty Blues” and you’ve got one big party. This CD just never quits. And you won’t want to ever quit playing it. It’s just one of those parties on a disc. Move the furniture and have a great time.

Blues CD Reviews - Brian “The Bluesman” BeachumMARY BRIDGET DAVIES Wanna Feel Somethin’Self-Releasewww.marybridgetdavies.com
Mary Bridget Davies’ breakout release, Wanna Feel Somethin’, is fresh off her second place finish at the 2011 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. Davies and her outstanding four-piece band recorded this 10-song set in Kansas City, punctuated by one screaming hot horn section. The CD features eight original tunes that showcase the writing strengths of guitarist Dave Hayes and bassist Gary Roberts, and the band’s true form to turn up the heat on some great sets.
Right out the gate, Davies’ vocals take off to the sky on “Your Kinda Love.” You’ve almost cleared the smoke outta the room on “Same Ol’ Blues.” The title track never quits! “Wanna Feel Somethin’” really shows off Mary’s vocal talents. Chris Hazelton brings in a mean B3 solo and Joe Voye just keeps pounding the beat on those drums! The last song on the CD, “Thunder and Lightnin’,” reminded me of the San Francisco-based ‘70s band, Cold Blood, with their hard-drivin’ horns and signature lead vocalist, Lydia Pense.
The fact is, this entire CD never quits. From hard-driving, gut-wrenching blues to some tender gospel-influenced rhythms on a few tunes, this collection just keeps delivering great high-quality blues that you wanna play right on through. Not a bad cut on here. Top Downloads: “Wanna Feel Somethin’,” “Your Kinda Love,” “Thunder and Lightnin’,” “Same Ol’ Blues.”
