Inside this issue:

Hi, my name is Will. Some of our regulars may have already met me on the floor over the

last five weeks, and lately, if you’ve not been greeted by Sarah or Greg’s confident, smil-

ing faces at the counter, you’ll probably have experienced my perplexed frown over the

cash register! I grew up on a grain, sheep & cattle farm at Jondaryan, just west of Too-

woomba, which was sold a couple of years ago. Since then I’ve been renovating houses &

cars, looking after the dogs, cats & chooks, the planned half-acre garden has become 2

acres, and I’ve run a part-time business French polishing, restoring & making furniture.

I’ve been a customer at Betta Produce for 4 years, and I can happily say that working here

is as enjoyable as buying chook food here!

Rearing chickens from day old requires husbandry skill, time and suitable equipment and

feed. Attention to detail is required to avoid high mortality, ill-thrift and poor lifelong per-

formance. Some helpful tips from our friends at Barastoc-

Day old chicks should be reared for at least the first 3 weeks inside a draught free enclosure

on clean dry litter materials such as wood shavings with a heat lamp or heater positioned so

that the temperature at the level of the litter is 32 degrees-35 degrees.

It is essential that day old chicks can easily access fresh water. A balanced feed of

appropriate size should be provided in feeders.

Decrease temperature gradually aiming to reach 21-24 degrees at 3-4 weeks of age. Once

birds are fully feathered , at around 5-6 weeks of age, they can tolerate lower

temperatures.

What to feed my chicks? 0-8 weeks of age Pullet Starter. Complete and nutrionally bal-

anced to support growth and health of young pullets. Suited to a range of layer type

breeds. Contains anti-coccidial to aid in the prevention of caecal and intestinal coccidiosis.

You can expect young pullets to consume 50 grams of feed per bird per day.

8-14 weeks of age Pullet Grower. Complete and nutrionally balanced to support growth and

health of young pullets. Suited to a range of layer type breeds. Contains anti-coccidial to aid

in the prevention of caecal and intestinal coccidiosis. Feed is pelletised and crumbled. You

can expect growing pullets to consume 95 grams of feed per bird per day.

Once pullets reach approximately 18 weeks of age they are then considered point of lay

hens. At Betta Produce we have a range of feeding options for laying hens. You can either

choose from a laying pellet or a laying mash. We also have a

range of grains

and mixed grains.

Handy Hint- Scattering feed on paper around the

feeders and drinking points for the first 24-48

hours will show the chicks how to readily gain

access to feed and water.

Pellet or Mash? Studies have shown that chickens absorb more nutrients in a pellet due to

not being able to separate the ingredients however some chooks prefer the mash and a

course mix is advisable in a flock so that all members get their fair share.

With Spring bringing the warmer weather this usually

means an increase in flying insects and for horse owners

that means the need to be vigilant against the risk of in-

sect borne viral infections. Unexplained cases of disease in

horses have been recorded around Australia in the past

and they have usually coincided with periods of very high

mosquito activity after a high rain fall period. When a fe-

male mosquito bites she also injects saliva and anti-

coagulants into the blood which may contain disease

causing organisms. Affected horses typically show either

nervous (neurological) signs, including being wobbly on

their feet, or a reluctance to move and swollen joints.

Affected horses usually recover uneventfully and deaths

are rare. Prevention for mosquitos– Horses kept in good

condition will generally have a strong immune system.

Use a rug on your horse and a insecticidal and/or repel-

lent spray. Eliminate breeding sites by removing stagnant/

standing water, house horses during dusk and dawn, use

florescent lights and use commercial mosquito traps.

Mosquitoes aren't the only insects which can cause con-

siderable concern for both horses and their owners over

Spring & Summer. Tune in for next months edition for

information on flies. We stock a range of repel-

lents and insecticidal products for horses and

other animals from $14.90 upwards.

Itchy dog? In some pets, particularly those with itchy or dry skin, ceramides and essential fatty ac ids can be depleted. This may affect the skin barrier’s ability to function correctly. There are many factors that may cause this including– harsh chemicals and irritants found in some shampoos and conditioners, environment e.g. wind, humidity and sunlight, diet, injury or physical trauma and genetic dis-position (common in Terrier, Retriever and Shepard breeds) . Providing key nutrients (essential fatty acids and ceramides) can help maintain healthy skin. There are two easy ways to do this-

Skin & Coat Problems?

Skin and coat condition is one of the major concerns for pet owners. It is

perceived to reflect animal’s general health and the nutritional adequacy of

their diet, and minor changes in the quality of skin & coat are immediately

apparent to owners.

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and totals approximately one sixth

of the body weight of a pet. The skin is particularly sensitive to changes in

the body’s internal environment, especially changes in nutrient supply, and

this makes it a useful barometer of the animals overall health status.

Skin infections range in type. A consequence of the poor skin structure can

lead to bacterial, fungal, allergic, parasitic infections. Certain clinical health

issues such as diabetes and digestive disorders can also impact on skin and

coat.

Bacterial Skin Diseases

Staphylococci are the most common organisms found in bacterial skin dis-

eases in dogs. It causes itchiness and yellow pustules on the dog’s skin that

can be reddened and ulcerated later. Dry, crusted areas appear as the con-

dition advances, along with loss of hair in the affected areas (lesions) and an

odour.

Fungal Skin Diseases

The fungal skin infections of dogs are caused primarily be two species of

fungi: Microsporum and trichophyton. The skin diseases resulting from

these fungi are commonly called 'ringworm.' The fungi live in dead skin

tissues, hairs and nails. Hair loss, usually in circular patches, may have a dry,

crusty appearance. The head and legs are most commonly affected by ring-

worm, although the disease may spread over other parts of the dog’s body

if not treated. Dogs may scratch the lesions.

Allergic Skin Diseases

Itchy skin, nasal and eye discharges and sneezing, and/or digestive upsets

and/or skin lesions may indicate the presence of an allergy. The most com-

mon allergy dogs develop is the flea saliva. Atopy (atopic dermatitis, allergic

inhalant dermatitis) is a pruitic skin disease developed in response to in-

haled particles such as house dust, molds and pollens. This common form of

allergy usually starts at a relatively young age. Rarely, dogs can be allergic to

chemicals contained in soaps, waxes, carpets and flea collars. This type of

hypersensitivity is known as a ‘contact allergy.’ Also, some dogs are allergic

to insect bites and stings. Food allergies usually case diarrhea and/or skin

lesions.

Parasitic Skin Diseases

Fleas are the most common parasitic skin diseases found in dogs. Mange is

another type of skin disease, which is caused by mites. Ear mites, lice, and

ticks are other parasites that affect dogs. Their presence irritates the dog,

leading to self-mutilation.

Hormonal Skin Diseases

The thyroid gland, adrenal glands, pituitary gland, testicles and ovaries all

produce hormones. If excessive or deficient, these hormones produce

changes in the skin and hair coat. Most hormonal problems that affect the

skin produce hair loss that is evenly distributed on each side of the dog's

body. The skin may be thicker or thinner than normal, and there may be

changes in the colour of the skin or hair coat. When any of the hormone-

producing glands malfunction, they affect other body functions besides the

skin. Hormonal skin diseases in dogs can be much more serious than a 'skin

problem.'

Research has shown that some of these diseases can be improved through

diet containing nutritional supplements. WALTHAM, the World’s Leading

Authority on Petcare and Nutrition, have shown that dietary supplementa-

tion with certain nutrients can significantly improve skin and coat condition.

POOR NUTRITION

Dietary deficiencies are possible in animals fed low quality food or poorly

prepared homemade diets. Levels of fatty acids essential for skin and coat

may also be decreased if food is stored for too long or is exposed to high

heat, leading to rancidity of fat. Signs of deficiency will initially be a dull, dry

coat with fine scale, continuing on to hair loss and greasy skin, with second-

ary bacterial infections.

Brother & Sister’s “Harnesschange” in Burpengary. Former NSW

residents Larry Treasure & his sister Sue Ottmann have recently set up their

own horse properties across the road from each other in Burpengary. They

have been building up a racing team by breeding and buying standardbreds

since retiring a few years ago.

They grew up on a farm named Gallymont Park, in the tiny NSW town of Mandurama. With the guidance of their father Roy

Treasure both Larry and Sue drove winners in the 1970’s & 1980’s at NSW & Victorian tracks generally on the family’s horses

that raced under the “Gallymont” name. But with such a small team Larry & Sue had to make their careers in business away from

the family stable and took no further part in Harness Racing for many years.

After retiring from their jobs Larry was the first to move to Brisbane in 2001. After a few years he became interested again in

Harness Racing buying some horses and winning several races. Not long after he asked Sue if she would like to move up to

Queensland to care for his “spelling” horses. Sue jumped at the chance. Peter (Sue’s husband) took on the job of searching for an

appropriate property and after driving many kilometres all over South East Queensland he located a special property here in

Burpengary. In 2006 Sue and Peter moved in.

Sue looked after many of Larry’s horses as they were spelled or recuperated from injuries. Then in August 2010 Larry and his

partner Mark (who does most of the feed buying from Betta Produce) were lucky enough to purchase a suitable property across

the road from Sue’s. Currently Larry has the older horses and Sue cares for the foals and educates the weanlings & yearlings be-

fore they are sent to be prepared for racing. The Treasure Team is doing quite nicely and currently has 2 trainers preparing and

Larry has also dabbled in Greyhounds purchas-

ing a young pup in 2006 which he named Treger

Beggar who won 8 races before retiring. He now

races TREGER TASTIC, pictured winning at Albi-

on Park, (4 wins) who is currently being pre-

pared by local greyhound trainer Sheryl Clark.

Larry, Mark and Sue would like take this oppor-

tunity to thank the friendly team at Betta Pro-

duce for their assistance in providing advice and

updates on the latest feed products since relo-

cating to the lovely suburb of Burpengary.
