February 2020 Volume 51, Issue 2
On Our Way Rejoicing “On our way rejoicing” is the theme for this year’s annual congregational banquet. By February 23rd (the date of our banquet) we should have a final cost for the building project, scope of the project, time-line, and financing determined for the congregation’s approval. It has been quite a lengthy and arduous process, and you have been incredibly patient (more so than me). I am looking forward to the day when this building project is no longer the topic of newsletter articles and periodic updates. Our ministry is so much more than a building project. But until it is completed it requires attention and communication. It is not the focus of our ministry, but it will be an important tool for our mission. Please sign up to join us for this very important meeting and celebration of our ministry together (a fabulous dinner will be served). In the meantime, the ministry continues on. Bible studies are meeting, people are serving others in need, the serving opportunities and outreach ministries have increased, fellowship events and participation has grown, all the while worshipping our Lord continues. I am grateful for all of your generous support of the mission and ministry at St Luke, and for all of your participation. I am grateful to be in ministry with you and to you. May God bless us this year that we may be a blessing to others. Let us go on our way rejoicing. Your brother in Christ,
Pastor Jim

January thru December 2019 OPERATING FUND
Income December was 99% of what is needed to cover our expenses.
At the end of December, the balance in the Operating Fund was $61,201. We began 2019 with $37,981.
By the end of December this year, income to the Operating Fund was ahead of the same period in 2018 by 5.1%. Expenses thru December were 9.0% above the same period in 2018.
LIFT HIGH THE CROSS CAPITAL CAMPAIGN • From 8/1/2018 through the end of December 2019, $1,052,381 has been given to our campaign. This is 62.5% of the total funds pledged, although note that some of these contributions have been given by individ-uals who have not made a pledge, or were given before our formal pledge process was in place. Thank you for your generosity!!
• As you are able, contributing to the campaign “ahead of the pledge schedule” will prolong our need for obtaining a loan, saving us interest.
• Pledges can be made at any time. If you have not made a pledge and would like to do so, or if you have questions about pledging or our campaign, please contact Sandy Randolph, our Church Administrator.
SEMINARY STUDENT SUPPORT FUND
Thanks to your wonderful generosity, our Seminarian Support Fund has been a great support to Taran Denning throughout his seminary studies and now as he is close to graduating.
Additionally, we are looking forward to providing support to our newest seminarian, Shane Heideman. Shane, his wife, Leah, and their two daughters are members of St. Luke. Shane has been our liturgist on Sunday morning, he and Leah are in charge of our Baby Kits for LWR, Leah is one of our new ushers and their daughters went on the mission trip to the Dominican Republic last summer and are involved with our youth group. Shane is currently a high school science teacher, but will begin his seminary studies at Luther Seminary in the Fall. As did Taran, he will continue to work while attend-ing seminary through their distance learning program.
As God has called Taran and now Shane into ministry, He has also gifted this congrega-tion with caring and supportive members such that we can extend a helping hand to our seminarians. Thank you again for your generosity!

Our Crosswalk Mission….
Crosswalk is a shelter for homeless teens located in downtown Spokane. The congregation of St. Luke faithfully and generously
supplies and delivers the ingredients for a complete meal for these kids on the fourth Sunday of every month.
The Crosswalk menu for February 23 will be Spaghetti & Meatballs & Garlic Bread. We will include Caesar salad, ice cream for dessert and soda pop to drink. The sign-up sheet is located on the bulletin board on the west wall in the Fellow-ship Hall and includes a complete list of items needed for the February dinner, plus a space to sign up to deliver the food to Crosswalk.
The requested items for the month of February are Lotion & Gloves.
Food and other items for Crosswalk are taken to the kitchen in the Multi-Purpose Room, where perishable items need to be placed in the refrigerator or freezer labeled “Crosswalk”. Nonperishable food items are put on the shelving unit just inside the pantry, labeled “Crosswalk”.
Share Sunday for the Mead Foodbank Bags for the donation of food for the Mead Food Bank will be hand-ed out after worship services the second Sunday of each month. There will be a list on each bag with examples of food items they are requesting. Donations can be delivered to the church anytime during business hours or on Sunday mornings. Please place items in the red barrel, located at the back entrance. Thank you!
Meal Ministry at All Saints Pastor Alan Eschenbacher and members of All Saints Lutheran Church (314 S. Spruce Street, 838-4409) have embraced the opportunity to provide ministry and meals to the homeless people in need in the Browne’s Addition area of southwest Spokane. Hot meals are provided throughout the month. St. Luke sends volun-teers on the second, third and fifth Tuesdays of the month. From 1:00 to 2:00 pm, two people are needed to cut up ingredients for the coming dinner. Then, from 4:30 to 6:30 pm, about ten St. Luke people are needed to help serve dinner. Clean-up happens toward the end of this time period. The dates for this month: Tuesdays, February 11 & 18; but you are welcome to help any Tuesday.
Baby Care Kits for LWR We will be having a work party at St. Luke to sew diapers and assemble kits on Saturday, February 22 at 10:00 am. Here’s what we need to maximize our kits: • Hand Towels, dark color preferred • Bath size bars of gentle soap (8-9 oz size) individually wrapped • Top/pants sets, gowns or sleepers without feet (any sizes 6-24 months) • Jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt (6-24 months) Items can be placed in a blue tote under the coat rack in the main hallway.
NOTE: Please either sign-up in person at church or call the church office to sign-up.
Fun activities are planned for our kids (up through 6th grade) downstairs.
A fun, kid-friendly dinner will be served.
A free-will offering will be graciously accepted to help offset the cost of our dinner.

College & Young Adult Ministry Our College and Young Adult Ministry seeks to connect college-age people and young adults in their 20s to one another and to the St. Luke congregation. We recognize that it can be difficult for young adults to find a “church home” and we hope to build a community of faith where young adults can tackle this thing called “adulting” together. If you are interested or know of a young adult who may be interested in getting involved, contact Youth and Young Adult Ministries Coordi-nator, Jacque Larson at 467-5256 or [email protected].

4th-6th Grade Girls Bible Study “We Saved You A Seat”
In a culture where friendship is measured in follows, likes, mentions and being “unfriended” is a very real worry; girls often think they need to have it all togeth-er. “We Saved You A Seat” takes girls deeper into Scripture to learn how to create, invest in and keep up lifelong friendships. This study led by Nikki Cerenzia will be 4 weeks in length and begins on Wednesday, April 15th. We will meet from 6:30-8:00 pm in The Attic at St. Luke. This is open to any girls in 4th-6th grade, so bring a friend with you. If you have any questions contact Nikki at [email protected].

Social Ministry would like to thank you all for your help with making Thanksgiving and Christmas possible for families in our neighborhood. Your generosity filled food baskets for both Thanksgiving and Christmas and put presents underneath Christmas trees for 31 families.
To show their appreciation, they will be providing homemade cookies and coffee for fellowship time after worship one Sunday in late February or early March. Stay tuned for details.
