If you have ever owned a share of stock, have shares in your retirement account or the account of a former
employer, you have no doubt seen a proxy statement mailed to you or sent via email. The purpose of those
statements is to allow you to vote on actions planned to be taken at the next Annual Meeting of that organiza-
tion, association or corporation.
As a Corporation, Jekyll Island Arts Association has an annual meeting, to conduct business of interest to
the membership, but mostly to elect new (or re-elected) Board members. Potential Board members are vetted
by our Nominating Committee and if elected, agree to serve a three-year term and to participate fully in the
actions and activities of the Jekyll Island Arts Association.
These meetings have always been held on the same evening as the Jekyll Island Singers winter Concert, and
the vote is taken of members in attendance. Because these events are open to the public, it is never 100% cer-
tain that those who attend and vote are actually JIAA members. And not all members attend the Concert, so
there is an element, notably our winter members, who are not available to attend, and thus miss the opportunity
to vote.
This year, we are trying something different and while a Nominating Committee will be appointed whose
charge it will be to prepare short bios of the potential candidates on the ballot, we will host a Virtual Annual
Meeting. If there is anything besides the proposed new Board members which requires a vote by the member-
ship, it will be included in ballots members receive.
In November the link to an online site will be sent via email to all members and instructions given to go to
the website to vote. Like all other proxy statements, there will be a deadline for voting.
Members who do not have an email address but want to exercise their ability to vote will be invited to have
a “buddy” who will help them vote, understand how to access the JIAA website to read the newsletter, and
anything else that will enable them to be fully engaged members of our Arts Association. In coming weeks,
you will hear more about the Virtual Annual Meeting. We trust you will vote, even if you are not physically
on Jekyll Island.
If you have any questions, need or want a buddy to help you with any of our communications, or are willing
to become a buddy for other member(s), please let us know by emailing us at [email protected]. Thank
you!

NEW JEKYLL ISLAND TARTAN
October 2018 Page 5
The Weaver’s Guild of the Jekyll Island Arts Association (aka Cottage Weavers) led by Betty Smith is pleased
to announce the new Jekyll Island Tartan! We have received permission from the Jekyll Island Authority to
use the name Jekyll Island and the pattern is officially registered with the Scottish Tartan Registry forever-
more. Jane DeBacker inspired the design having selected the beautiful colors. Betty Smith completed the de-
sign and wrote the following justification/description for the Scottish Tartan Registry:
Jekyll Island is a 9 x 2 mile barrier island off the Georgia coast in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a holiday
playground as well as home for some 650 residents. This tartan was designed to reflect life on Jekyll.
The light blue represents both the sky and water, accented by white clouds and white surf. The light
yellow represents our sun. There is a canopy of green, 100 to 300 year old Live Oak trees shading
the land. These are set-off by the black trunks of those trees. The design is simple, as is the life on
Jekyll.
We hope this new tartan will inspire the imagination of all our artists and new artistic endeavors. If you have
any questions, please feel free to contact Betty Smith at [email protected].
****** Word to the wise weaver: The pattern shown on the Scottish Tartan Register may have to be modified
based on the width of the item being woven and the size thread used. If you would like guidance, it will be
posted on the bulletin board in the weaver’s area, 2nd floor of Goodyear Cottage. There will be guidance for
12epi, 15epi, 20epi and 24epi. If you are not local, please feel free to contact Betty Smith
at [email protected]. **********

FACILITIES HISTORY QUESTION
I am looking for information regarding when and why the boost transformer was added in the pot
shop for the kilns to boost the incoming voltage up from 208 VAC to 233 VAC. Currently 3 of
the kilns are running off of that transformer and the fourth is wired to our 208 voltage. It appears
that the transformer may have been added mid-2006.
If anyone has information please give me a call at 506-1077 or email at [email protected]
Please Note: No prizes will be awarded for the correct answer.
