Early voting

starts on May 24,

2014 and continues

until June 6, 2014.

Election day is June

10th. For your con-

venience, we have

provided an exten-

sive list of the Republican candidates

for our region on our website:

fernleyrepublicanwomen.com. I urge

you to go over each candidate’s infor-

mation, so you will know which one of

them most reflects your views.

Voter turnout for Primary Elec-

tions is usually low. In 2012, Nevada’s

turnout for the Primary Election was

just 22.83%. Some people say it

doesn’t matter and that they will just

wait for the General Election. That

leaves 1 out of 5 making the decision

as to who will move on to the General

Election. Please vote!

The Right Side of Fernley expresses

its grateful appreciation to those can-

didates who placed their advertise-

ments in our newsletter. Those ads

can be found on pages 6 and 7. An-

other opportunity for candidate ad-

vertisements will be available in our

Fall issue, which will be distributed

just prior to the start of early voting

for the General Election.

Recently, I had the opportunity to

hear several presentations on the Edu-

cation Initiative, a.k.a. the Margins

Tax. If this initiative passes, Nevada’s

economic interest will suffer. Poten-

tial businesses are on hold pending the

Margins Tax vote. They are interest-

ed in Nevada as their business loca-

tion, but will go elsewhere if the Mar-

gins Tax is enacted. As stated in

stopthemargintax.com, “The tax would

be on gross revenues, not profits. As a

result, it would be the equivalent of a

nearly 15% corporate income tax –

making Nevada one of the five highest-

taxed states in the country for business

owners.”

At our June meeting, the Education

Initiative (Margins Tax) will get criti-

cal attention. We are fortunate to

have booked Gerald O’Driscoll, Sen-

ior Fellow at the Cato

Institute, to inform us on

the perils of a Margins

Tax victory and how Ne-

vada will certainly suffer

economic harm to its bot-

tom line. Dr. O’Driscoll

was the former director of the Center

for International Trade and Econom-

ics at the Heritage Foundation where

he was senior editor of the annu-

al Index of Economic Freedom, co-

published by Heritage and The Wall

Street Journal. Please make every

effort to attend the meeting. Encour-

age everyone you know to be there —

especially business owners.

For those in Fernley: Did you know? In a city election, if all candidates are of

the same party, and one candidate gets more than 50% of the vote during the

primary, he/she is automatically elected and does not have to go to the general

election. And you thought your vote in the primary didn't matter!

Brandi Jensen, FRW member Editor’s note: This is also true for some Lyon County races.

President Anita Trone:

I moved to Fernley in June, 2006. In addition to politi-

cal activities, I love to go RVing with my husband, Orlis,

and our cat, Simba. We have visited almost every part of

the western United States and look forward to seeing more

of this great country throughout the next few years.

In 2007, I became a member of the Lyon County Re-

publican Central Committee (LCRCC) and have held

leadership positions since. I have been elected as an

LCRCC representative to the Nevada Republican Central

Committee since 2009 and served on that body’s Creden-

tials Committee since 2012. As a leader in the biennial

caucus/precinct meetings, I have been elected as a delegate

to the county and state conventions since 2008.

I joined the Fernley Republican Women (FRW) in 2008

and have served on the Board of Directors since 2009. I

was elected FRW President in 2010 and again in 2011. In

2008, 2010 and 2012, I was instrumental in setting up and

co-managing the FRW-LCRCC Campaign Office. I have

been active with the Nevada Federation of Republican

Women (NvFRW), attending most of its Board of Direc-

tors meetings, leadership training sessions and campaign

management schools. In addition, I was a delegate to the

NvFRW’s 2009, 2011 and 2013 biennial conventions. In

2011, I was a delegate to the National Federation of Re-

publican Women (NFRW) biennial convention in Kansas

City, Missouri.

I have worked as a senior financial manager in public

and private companies for over 30 years. I am currently

the part-time Controller for Kent’s Supply in Fallon.

1st Vice President Carol Franich:

I have lived in Fernley since 1997. I am the proud

owner of Pizza Shack in Fernley where we serve the best

pizza and wings in town.

I have 32 years of federal service—15 years for the De-

partment of Defense at the China Lake Naval Weapons

Center and 17 years at the Federal Aviation Administra-

tion.

I joined the FRW in the summer of 2010. I was elect-

ed Treasurer that same year. I served as Treasurer for 3

years. I have been a member of the Audit and Budget

Committees for 3 years. Currently, I am the chairman of

the Budget Committee and a member of the Campaign

Committee.

My hobbies are reading, gardening, crafts and, in May,

I will have a new hobby of spoiling my first grandchild!

2nd Vice President Linda Carr:

I have lived in Fernley since 1962. My hobbies and in-

terests are my grandchildren, scrapbooking, hunting, fish-

ing and camping.

What qualifies me for this position? In 1991, I joined

our local volunteer fire department. In the first year, I re-

ceived training to be an EMT and a firefighter. I have also

held many positions within the volunteer organization. I

was Ambulance Coordinator for 7 years, Secretary for 4

years and Treasurer for 7 years. I am currently the Volun-

teer President of North Lyon County Fire Department. I

also became a member of the Nevada State Firefighter’s

Association, Inc. (NSFA). NSFA is an organization of ap-

proximately 1500 firefighters—volunteer and career. In

2003, I was elected by my peers to be a board member.

During my 9 years on the board, I worked up the ladder

and became President in 2010-2011. There were many du-

ties related to the fire service including legislative issues

and coordination of an annual statewide training confer-

ence.

For the past twenty years, I have been employed by

Lyon County School District. I work at Fernley Elemen-

tary School as a paraprofessional, working in Special Edu-

cation.

Thank you for this opportunity to serve this organiza-

tion.

Secretary Charlene Shannon:

I moved to Nevada in 1968, living and working in the

Reno-Sparks-Virginia City area. In April 2003, my hus-

band and I moved to Fernley. I am currently a member

of the NRA and have been an ardent supporter/volunteer

for the Friends of the NRA in Reno and Fernley/Fallon for

the last 8 years. I served as Planning Secretary for Storey

County Planning Department from 2000-2002. I worked

for Western Title Company for 20 years, retiring 3 years

ago. While there, I moved up through the ranks ending

my career as their System Administrator in charge of their

computer system. I trained over 200 employees located in

7 offices throughout northern Nevada.

Over the last 20 years, my husband and I have always

enjoyed fishing, camping and target shooting in Nevada.

Now that I'm retired, my husband, Pat, our dog, Savage,

and I plan to explore more of Nevada, along with as many

states as we can. Besides traveling, I also enjoy reading,

crocheting, quilting and watercolor painting. One of my

favorite pastimes is making afghans and quilts for Project

Linus. Project Linus provides homemade blankets for any

hospitalized children from infant to teen years.

I became a member of the Fernley Republican Women

three years ago and volunteer for as many functions as

possible. I am extremely proud to be a part of this club

and to work with all of its very capable and professional

members.

Treasurer Peggy Gray:

I have been active in Republican politics since moving

to Nevada in 1997. In 2005, I founded the Fernley Repub-

lican Women (FRW), which was chartered by the National

Federation of Republican Women in January 2006. I was

elected as the first FRW president in 2005 and served until

December 2009. In 2010, I served as vice president and

am currently serving as your treasurer.

Before moving to Fernley, I was a member of the Car-

son City Republican Women’s Club and served as Secre-

tary for two terms, Achievement Awards Committee

Chairman and Parliamentarian. I also served on a num-

ber of different committees.

I am active in the Nevada Federation of Republican

Women and have attended Board meetings and conven-

tions as a delegate since 1998. I have served on a variety of

committees and was a Regents co-chairman in 2010 and

2011.

I have been a member of the Lyon County Republican

Central Committee (LCRCC) since 1997 and am the cur-

rent chairman. I served as its secretary from 2000-2002

and again from 2005-2012. In 2000, 2006, 2008, 2010 and

2012, I served as Secretary to the Lyon County Conven-

tion. I have served on or as chairman of the Platform,

Nominating, Rules and Bylaws committees. I have contin-

uously been elected as a LCRCC representative to the Ne-

vada State Central Committee for over ten years and have

faithfully attended meetings and state conventions during

that time. In 2004 and 2006, I served on the state Platform

Committee twice and on the Elections Committee once. In

2008, with the endorsement of Assemblyman Tom Grady

and Minority Leader Heidi Gansert, I was elected as an

alternate delegate to the National Republican Convention

in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Also in 2008, 2010 and 2012, I assisted in the manage-

ment of the FRW-LCRCC Campaign Office in Fernley. In

2008, I was a site coordinator and leader of the caucus at

one of the four sites in Fernley and in 2010, I was site coor-

dinator for the Republican caucus in Fernley. I have

walked precincts, made telephone calls and hosted “meet

and greets” in my home in support of Republican candi-

dates for state and local offices.

I retired from the state of California in 1997, having

spent most of my career with the Board of Corrections.

My interests outside of politics are gardening, reading and

bowling.

During election years, the FRW presents Republican speakers, forums and political debates. These events give

our community a chance to hear candidates introduce themselves in their own words and also give the audience

the opportunity to ask questions. Our meetings are always open to the public and are held at the Fernley High

School Library, 1300 Highway 95A in Fernley. At 6:00 p.m., we gather for a bite to eat and a little community

chit-chat. Our program for the evening starts promptly at 6:30 p.m.

“Thought

control” is de-

capitation with-

out removal of

the head. The

head remains

attached, but is

filled with polit-

ical propaganda

that obstructs

the mind’s capacity for critical judg-

ment. Reduced to unthinking “dead

-heads,” the victims of the indoctri-

nation do not trust the efficacy of

their own minds and are dependent

on an outside source for mental di-

rection, that is, to tell them what to

believe and what to do. As civilized

as mankind claims to be, we are yet

surrounded by laboratory govern-

ments that continue the practice of

decapitating their subject-citizens

with political propaganda in the

production of “useful idiots.” Theirs

is the world of “Transylvania”—in

real life and real time.

Thought control has forever been

the tyrant’s favorite approach in the

maintenance of their mastery over

the masses. Since “brainwashing” is

administered by word of mouth—

propaganda—it lends the propagan-

da the sound of persuasion. But

when a dissident emerges from

amongst the masses and dares to

challenge that “persuasion,” the

brute force of “all the king’s men” is

summoned to re-establish obedience

to authority. The dissident is

charged with crimes of the tongue

and sentenced to suffer the gro-

tesque brutalities of cruel and unu-

sual punishment—including the for-

feiture of life.

Across the ages of man’s society-

building history, America was the

first society to recognize “freedom of

speech” as the inalienable and una-

bridgable right of mankind. So that

there would be no doubt about it,

our founding fathers ratified that

right as the “First Amendment” to

the U. S. Constitution. That is

where America parted company

with the past to “start the world

anew.”

The First Amendment decrimi-

nalized the “libelous offense” of

“speaking ill” of officialdom and, as

represented in the famous expres-

sion: “I disagree with everything you

say, but I will defend to my death

your right to say it,” equalized the

speech of every tongue. The right-

ness or wrongness of what one said

was no longer the issue, but rather,

one’s right to say it—right or wrong.

Today, however, the First

Amendment is under siege by the

Democratic Party and a mob of anti-

free speech progressives. Once

again, expressing a “politically incor-

rect” opinion is treated as a “libelous

offense,” subject to the imposition of

punishment by “all the king’s

men”—the “PC Police.” An

“offense” can cost you your busi-

ness, or a speaking engagement at a

university, or the cancellation of an

interview with a mainstream media

news outlet; it can get you fined, or

fired, or sentenced to a “re-

education camp” for “sensitivity

training,” and so on.

The objective of the “PC Police”

is identical to the objective of the

tyrants of thought control: to con-

trol human behavior. In April of

2010, I spoke to that subject in my

article, “Political Correctness: Tyr-

anny By Any Other Name.” I pre-

sented the issue as follows:

Does political correctness exert

real influence over social behavior,

or is it just a silly indulgence in silly

pretense? To answer that question,

I submit to you the astounding

“dereliction of duty” by the military

authorities at Fort Hood. Ameri-

cans used to assert, without a second

thought, the adage that “You can

judge a person’s character by the

company they keep,” but not any-

more. Political correctness has

criminalized that truism as “racist

stereotyping.” Reacting to that

“adjudication,” the Fort Hood brass

restricted themselves so severely

that, even as they observed one of

their soldiers jaunting about the

planet fraternizing with his Ameri-

can-hating fellow terrorists, their

response was to abide by the moral

admonition of the three neutrality

monkeys: Hear no evil, see no evil,

and speak no ill of the evil you hear

and see. Red flags aplenty were

raised by the conspicuous and ex-

tremely questionable behavior of

Major Nidal Malik Hasan. But in

fear of offending the “PC Police,”

the Fort Hood higher-ups ordered

an intelligence “stand-down” against

investigating him. You know the

rest of the story.

Freedom of speech and the free-

dom of person are halves of an inter-

dependent whole. Where one does

not exist, you will not find the other.

I submit that there is no person or

political party intent on controlling

freedom of speech that is not, at

once, intent on controlling human

behavior. As goes freedom of

speech, so goes the freedom of per-

son.
