Anyway, as February is coming to a close; I would like to thank those sponsors who have been gracious enough to sponsor our chapter. For those who still want to sponsor the chapter there is still time, we will be closing chapter sponsorships at the end of February. The following sponsorship packages are still available Gold, Silver and Bronze. Refer to published sponsorship levels later in this newsletter.

Didn’t we just meet? It seems as if the days go by faster and faster. We’ve seen

four seasons within the month of February and the masses are on edge waiting for a

snowstorm. We’d like our previous speaker Kevin Freidt of Caleffi and the great folks at

Carolina Sales for setting that up and hosting. Please be aware that next month we

will be meeting at Lewis Marketing 1511 Ameron Drive Charlotte, NC. Bob Buddo

will has set up a presentation with Erin Anderson on Behavioral Health Plumbing

Fixtures. Also, to encourage more engineers to be in attendance, we’re giving away a

$50.00 visa gift card at every meeting this year. You MUST be present to win! Each

engineer will receive a ticket upon signing in and we’ll draw a ticket at the end of the

meeting.

This month Roman Grier from the Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute (CISPI) will be

presenting with us. Roman has over 10 years of experience working for a HVAC dealer, a

manufacturer’s rep agency and a trade association. He has significant experience calling

on plumbing engineers, building inspectors, contractors, and end-users. He is very

active in the Atlanta ASPE Chapter. Roman is 2007 graduate from Georgia College &

State University in Milledgeville, GA. In his spare time Roman enjoys spending time with

his wife and two children. The topic for this month is “Cast Iron Soil Pipe: The Logical

Choice.”

Hello Charlotte ASPE members,

Well we are only two months in the new year, and it is already shaping to be a to be a good year. This month topic will cover what can cause a trap to lose its seal and the current North Carolina code requirements for trap seal protection.

A loss of a trap seal will result in foul odors through a buildings sanitary system. The odor can be an unpleasant nuisance for building occupants and can be a health hazard. For this reason ensuring that traps maintain their seal is imperative in our industry. There are several reasons why a trap can lose its seal including poor system design and installation. Others include:

• Self siphonage - The removing of water from a trap, as a result of siphonage set up by the momentum of discharge from the fixture to which the trap is connected.

• Induced siphonage - Siphonage of water from a fixture trap usually due to an improperly installed vent pipe. As a result, when another fixture on the same vent pipe discharges, siphonage may be induced.

• Back pressure – Negative pressure developed in opposition of flow.

It is recommended that you research and understand how to prevent occurrences like these from happening.

Trap seal protection was revised and allows one of four methods of protecting the trap seal. The methods previously allowed were the water-supplied trap seal primer and the waste-supplied trap seal primer. Added to the allowable methods are a reclaimed water trap seal primer and a barrier-type trap seal protection device. The latter must conform to ASSE 1072. Mecklenburg County plan review has been allowing barrier-type trap seal protection devices used with the expectation that it would become accepting statewide. My personal preference is to provide a barrier-type trap seal protection device and provide a hose bibb in the same room. For those who have done K-12 design, The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction requires a hose bibb located in a room where they are floor drains.

I hope everyone has been enjoying our mild weather. I’m still hoping for snow, guess I’ll have to head to the mountains.

I failed to mention last month that two of our members received ASPE Coins of Appreciation. Congrats to David Lewis & Timothy Washington, Jr.

I don’t have any new members to introduce or welcome this month. Which brings up a point, our membership numbers have dropped, we’re down to 94 members.I’d like to ask your help in recruiting people to join our chapter. I will be contacting some previous members that haven’t been involved lately, and would like it if you could talk about ASPE to others in your office, especially the younger people who need to be involved to keep everything going. This year is a good year to join, with the convention and expo in New Orleans in September.

Registration for the convention & expo will open in April. Fun information so far is the Sunday night opening party will be hosted by the Bradley Corporation at the House of Blues. What better place than New Orleans to listen to blues?
