CHAIRMANS REPORT

Now that the rest of the country has experienced a typical Lancashire summer, you know what I moan about most years. Everybody seems to have their own disaster stories to tell as if to ‘out do’ the last story. The consequences of the summer are going to carry on through the winter, spring and next summer, with cows not milking to their full potential, fodder shortages, inability to sow next year crops and fields to repair for the next grazing season. At least the milk prices have improved, although whether this will cover all the extra costs we are incurring is yet to be seen.

Next year see’s the 40th Anniversary of the Society. To celebrate this we are hoping to hold a dinner evening with a speaker after the AGM farm walk. A Society sale is also on the agenda. We are launching a new showing outfit {as Brad Pitt wasn’t available yours truly had to do the modelling} and merchandise clothing.

You may have noticed that the Chimes has gone to A4 size. We felt that the larger type would be beneficial for those of us who think that there is nothing wrong with our eye sight and it’s the type that’s getting smaller. The A4 size could also be put in a folder for future reference. We aim to get four editions printed a year, and would appreciate our members input, articles etc. We are just farmers at the end of the day, not journalists and editors

September saw the dairy event at the NEC where the good weather had an impact on the attendance. I would like to thank the exhibitors for their efforts in the show ring. The quality of the cattle did not go un-noticed by the visitors I spoke too. Congratulations, of course, goes to all the winners. Next year see’s our national showcase take place at the NEC at the new July date. New exhibitors will be made most welcome.

Switzerland held the European Brown Swiss Show on the 8th December 2012, with cattle from France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria competing for the title of European champion. A number of us went over. We will keep you updated with pictures being posted on our Facebook page[ Brownswiss cattle society UK.] For those of you not on the social networking we will have a report and pictures for our next edition.

All that’s left for me to do is wish you a Merry Christmas and a drier New Year.

OFFICE NEWS We are here at the end of 2012 – and what a year it has been – I am sure for many of you it won’t be too soon that we enter a new year, but we as a society have much to celebrate and to start with we have a new-look Journal which we hope you enjoy as much as we have putting it together. 2013 is a special year for the society, to begin with we will be celebrating our 40th anniversary – and with this milestone we think it gives us a fabulous opportunity to promote the breed. The society will be showcasing the breed at the new Livestock 2013 - from next year RABDF will be back at the helm and ensuring that Dairy Farmers interests are at the heart of the show. For those planning to show their Swiss we are pleased to report that stall fees will be £50. The RABDF are trying to secure excellent rates for caravan parking and also generous discounts for meals. We would love to see you there – 3rd and 4th July. Before that the successful Dairy Expo Carlisle will be held 8th and 9th March – there promises to be some great Swiss also at this show. Paperless registrations – the society have decided it would be best for farmers to have a choice as to whether they go paperless or not. With immediate effect you can download your own registration certificates or use the QR code to scan onto your smartphone. More information in the journal and on the website. You can login on the CDI website with your herd and pin no. http://ukcows.com/thecdi/login.aspx or via our website. We are pleased to welcome another seven members (more if you count the actual members of each family who are joining the society), they are stretched right across the country. I have included a members listing to enable closer ties for members wishing to keep in contact. For those who have something to share with their dairy farming systems it would be great to hear from you, how your herd is shaping up, how your robots are faring, what you are feeding etc. etc. It is always good to hear your news, this month Emma Bruce and Rob Darlington have written about their experiences in the dairy trade, showing, moving farm and coping with the weather and their breeding success. We also have a new showing shirt that we hope everyone will be wearing at next year’s shows. Please contact the office if you require further details on any of the above [email protected] or 01452 883063 and don’t forget to join us on facebook – ‘UK brown swiss’. Jenni Hobbs (Secretary)

New Paperless Certificates Information

Tired of filing paperwork? You can now opt for paperless certificates which can be viewed online. More often than not, pedigree certificates are out of date as soon as they are printed as data is continuously being updated with regards to the animal and their ancestry through evaluation runs, DNA testing, completing lactations and classification. With online information being regularly updated, it has become apparent that a new online paperless certificate is necessary to ensure that up to date facts are known and used. All Brown Swiss Cattle Society members are now able to download and print pedigree certificates online via the CDI Website. To access this, all you need to do is click on the link on the Brown Swiss Cattle Society website, where you will be taken to the CDI Website and you can sign in with your Prefix and PIN number.

Once logged into the Members Section, all you need to do is follow these three simple steps:

1. Click the link ‘Request Certificates via Herd List’ • You will be taken to your Herd List where you are able to select a maximum of 10 animals

that you require certificates for. • Each time an animal is selected it will appear at the top of the page where you have the

option to remove the animal from the requests. 2. When you have finished selecting your animals, click on ‘Run Certs’

• The online certificates can take up to five minutes to generate depending on how many have been requested.

• While this is taking place, you are still able to browse around the website 3. Then when the certificates have been generated, a green ‘New Cert(s) available’ link will appear on

the top right of the page. • Click on this to get access to your online pedigrees • All certificates will be available for 48 hours only to ensure that certificates don’t go out of

date.

If you no longer wish to receive Pedigree Certificates in the post, please contact the Brown Swiss Cattle Society Membership Services on 01452 883063 or email: [email protected]. Quick Response Codes (QR Codes)

Ready, set, SCAN!

As of 1st October 2012, all pedigree certificates will have Quick Response (QR) Codes available on them which can be found in the top right hand corner by the Ear Tag Number. QR Codes are a type of barcode which hyperlink to a website address or URL. Originally invented in Japan for the automotive industry, they are becoming increasingly popular throughout the farming industry. They are generated by a computer program and can be read by a QR Reader which can be downloaded from your smartphone application store.

Moonriver I first encountered Brown Swiss cattle on a farm that I worked on (many years ago) near Telford, Shropshire. They made quite an impression on me and when the opportunity to buy some at Beeston Auction arose in April 2005 I managed to persuade Rob to come and have a look with me. We came home with a maiden heifer, Kedar Nofak Ricka. We already had some black and white heifers – we both worked on farms locally and kept our youngstock at Rob’s dad’s farm. Later that summer we purchased three in-calf Swiss heifers from the Quarry herd of Alun and Carolyn Davies which included Quarry Chime Kuba and Quarry Cartoon Heke. These three cows now have daughters and a granddaughter milking with a fourth generation that has been served this ‘summer’. Ricka and Kuba are still here. We were able to further increase our cattle numbers by being able to keep 50 milkers at the farm where Rob worked as herdsman and I as a relief milker. That farm was being increased in size from 300 cows to in excess of 800 at that time. Our cows were 50:50 Holstein and Swiss and Rob’s boss was worried that when our cows first went there (and knowing that we had spent our hard earned cash on these cows) that the Swiss would be knocked about and bullied by his Holsteins. The Swiss soon allayed his fears and were first at the feed fence, in the field, along the cow tracks and in the parlour. On quite an intensive system it was interesting to note the lack of metabolic disorders, relatively trouble free feet and their calving ease. The chance to rent Marley Hall arose in March 2011 and we started milking here on 2 June last year and began dairying in our own right. We came here with 60 cows (weaned calves through to in-calf heifers are on an additional unit down the road) and last summer had just 100 acres for the cows and silaging in what was a dust bowl of a summer. We have steadily increased numbers (and acreage) to the current 115 cows of which 47 are Brown Swiss. When we came here we had more Swiss than Holstein but the need to increase numbers has led us to purchase cows from dispersals at Beeston which have been virtually all Holstein with the exception of the Farrick dispersal last November. We are now using Brown Swiss across the whole herd and what little Holstein semen that remains in our flask will not be replaced once it has gone. Service sires currently being used include Brookings, Vigor, Denver, Huray, Ettal, Mojo, TD, Manchester, Traction and Dally on the Swiss, and Ettal, Huray, Payssli, Denpro, Torch, Mojo and Brookings on the Holsteins, and Brookings and TD on the Jerseys. British Blue and Simmental are used on the lower end cows. Youngstock are predominantly by Prelude Zeus and Agenda (two bulls that worked particularly well for us as sexed semen), Vigor, TD, Huray, Shrek and Mojo. Our Swiss on our milk recordings in April and May averaged 27.5kg, milk recordings thereafter went steadily downhill on a par with the rest of the country! Yields are recovering and as cows calve down again, the average is on the increase. On our first milk recording here in July 2011 the whole herd averaged 22kg. The Swiss and Holsteins are not recorded separately so for milk quality I can only go on bulk tank tests. Currently butterfat stands at around 4.5% and protein 3.5% for November.

It would be remiss of us not to mention two of our favourite Swiss cows, both of which we have unfortunately lost since we came here. Highlight Pride Jemma (EX92 4YR 93MS) had her first calf at the age of one year eleven months and calved her fifth at five years nine months, a feat which is noteworthy. She has left us with three daughters, two of which are milking and both VG two year olds, and three granddaughters. Webscott Banker Helga 2nd (EX91) was always a production cow and in her fifth and final lactation was producing 54kg a day. Sadly she only had bull calves! Jemma’s eldest daughter, Moonriver Etvei Jemma VG88 took her turn in the show ring this year. A second calver, Etvei Jemma loves the attention that goes with showing. She was breed champion at the Shropshire Show, Cheshire Show and the National All Breeds at the NEC and actually succeeded in putting a smile on Rob’s face after a bit of a turbulent summer. Etvei Jemma’s eldest daughter by TD is the spitting image of her mother and is due in the spring to sexed Galaxy.

Rob with Moonriver Etvei Jemma at Livestock 2012 As we come towards the end of our first eighteen months here, the cows have coped well with all the changes thrown at them in the last couple of years. We are still smiling (sometimes through gritted teeth) and look forward to increasing our PI families, grading up the Holsteins to Swiss and indulging in some more embryo work in the future.

Thank you very much for your support.

Italian government “arrests” cloned bull This was the headline in several newspapers around 16th October 1999. The culprit was an 8 month old Brown Swiss bull., and his crime? He was a clone, of the well known Italian bull Emory Tammys Zoldo. “On Sept 24, Italian police detained two bulls and are investigating their veterinarian for allegedly having done banned animal-cloning experiments. Zoldo, a 7-year-old pedigree Bruna bull, was released from custody on Oct 5. The bull's cloned son Galileo is still being kept at state horse stables, in Crema, Italy.”

“Poor Galileo, just a youngster and he's under arrest, locked in a stall and accused of being a freak. And the young bovine's crime? He's a clone. Galileo, billed as Italy's first cloned bull, was unveiled Thursday 23rd September 1999 at a dairy cattle show in Cremona. The backlash was swift from a government that forbids cloning. “A monster!” proclaimed a prominent Green senator, Maurizio Pieroni. The next day, the Health Ministry confiscated Galileo pending an investigation into his creation. They also nabbed his dad, a famous bull named Zoldo. Galileo was born at a laboratory in Cremona under the guidance of Italian veterinarian Cesare Galli, who worked with the Scottish scientist who created Dolly the sheep in 1997. But Dolly, the world’s first mammal cloned from an adult cell, was a worldwide sensation and has lived a life of pampered ease. Galileo, by contrast, is being treated “like a dangerous terrorist,” one commentator said. On Saturday, newspapers showed two handlers from the Health Ministry leading the puzzled young bull away, one pushing his gray rump, the other pulling his cream-colored nose” “I hope they treat him with care,” an indignant Galli told the daily La Stampa. “They’re responsible for him now.” The veterinarian insisted he violated no laws in cloning Galileo. But health ministry officials disagreed, accusing him of straying into a genetic Wild West of lawless experimentation. “The experiment was conducted in violation of all ministerial directives concerning cloning, to say nothing of ... the 1992 legislative decree on animal experimentation,”

Page 10: Inside - The Brown Swiss Breed December 12.pdf · All that’s left for me to do is wish you a Merry Christmas and a drier New Year. ... Kedar Nofak Ricka. We already had ... relatively

Health Minister Rosy Bindi said. Bindi issued a decree forbidding cloning at the end of 1998. The 1992 guidelines, among other things, require researchers to obtain government permission for animal experiments. But Galli said the Galileo embryo predates Bindi’s decree. He also said the ministry told him he didn’t need permission for the subsequent experiments that led to the bull’s birth. The technique Galli used for his bull differed from the Dolly experiment, which used a cell from an adult ewe’s udder. Galli used a white blood cell from Zoldo to create an embryo, then implanted it into a cow. Italy has a bit of a split personality when it comes to reproductive and genetic technology. Italian researchers have been among the world’s leaders in technology that lets older women give birth. At the same time, many Italians recoil at cloning and genetic experiments on religious grounds and reject many biotechnological techniques as crimes against nature and the environment. With this in mind, and girding for controversy, Galli named his bull in honour of the Renaissance astronomer who faced the wrath of the Inquisition for saying the Earth revolves around the Sun. "It wasn't an accident we named him Galileo," Galli told the daily Corriere della Sera. Of course this is Italy, and there are many powers that be, including the Catholic Church. The AgBiotech Reporter (November 1999, p. 20) stated: “Last month, Italian officials confiscated Galileo, Italy's first cloned male calf, along with Zoldo, the source of Galileo's DNA. The Vatican intervened in the ensuing controversy, noting that it is absolutely legitimate to genetically modify animals to improve conditions for man. After a meeting of Catholic theologians and experts on animal and plant biotechnology, Archbishop Elio Sgreccia said that the Catholic Church is generally in favor of biotechnologies that may be useful for mankind. According to a report in Agence France Presse, Sgreccia also viewed favorably such products as genetically modified maize and soybeans, while warning that consumers must be informed about such products through labelling.” For those of you who are wondering about poor little Galileo, well, he was eventually released, I believe at about 1yr old and he did reach adulthood. Unfortunately, he turned out to be sterile, described as a “lack of libido!!”

The Adult Galileo! Great thanks go to Richard Beard of Holstein UK for sourcing this story.

Fifty Shades Of Brown You should be careful what you wish for. Talking to a farmer during a few days of glorious sunshine in early May this year, he remarked how pleased he was to get maize drilled, first cut silage off, the aftermath top-dressed and some summer turnips drilled to complete a busy but rewarding week. He finished this list of jobs with a prescient phrase. “All we need now”, he said, “is some rain.” And boy did it rain. All through the rest of May, into June, most of July and a fair bit of August. He got his rain all right but the wettest summer that most of us can ever remember has been extremely challenging for dairy cows. The only two options have been to keep them in and use expensive feed, which has a scarcity value because of the wet, or to turn them out and see them stand under the hedge not eating and risk losing body condition. Visiting Phil and Ali Rundle’s mixed herd of Holsteins and ‘Tamar’ Brown Swiss near Tavistock in West Devon in late August I was struck by the differences between the black and whites and the various shades of brown of the Swiss. The Rundle’s first experience with the Swiss breed was in 2006 when fifteen or so animals were purchased from Rob Gulliford’s Poorshill herd in Somerset. I had suggested that they look at the breed as their farm is a difficult one to work with steep banks, wet meadows and a lot of walking, and as I had personal experience of Rob’s medium sized, easy-care cows I recommended them without hesitation. The new arrivals settled in quickly and soon displayed their familiar characteristics of aggressive feeding, queuing up to be first in the parlour and coping well with the long walks to pasture. There are still Poorshill Swiss in the herd as well as many daughters of those original cows, so the breed now numbers about 80 in the milking herd of 180, at various levels of crossing, plus numerous followers. At Poorshill, the daughters of Cancourt ES Snowden were superior to other bulls used and we secured some semen from the dead bull at the dispersal, as well as several daughters. He has continued to breed very well balanced cows, as more recently has Denver, who has stamped his mark wherever I have used him. Cows like Tamar Denver Juliet who has just completed her second lactation at over 8,500 kgs at 4.15% fat and 3.58% protein with lovely conformation are typical of the Denvers. Incidentally, the 15 milking Denvers average about 106 CPI on the NMR records whilst the 22 Snowden daughters have an average SCC of about 130, almost half the herd average. So how have the Swiss at Ferry Farm coped with the wet weather this year? Keepers of the breed will not be surprised to learn that they have coped very well under the conditions and have certainly maintained milk yield and body condition better than the Holsteins. The herd is not extreme with lactation averages around 7,500 to 8,000 kgs coupled with high levels of fat and protein but there is no doubt that the Swiss are at least a point or more above the Holsteins in body condition score. This didn’t particularly surprise me but to check over the cattle and see it for myself only confirmed the qualities of the Swiss in coping with extreme conditions. The walks to pasture haven’t affected their feet as it has the Holsteins and only one older cow was lame when I visited. They have also maintained milk quality despite the sopping wet grass that they have had to eat most days and it certainly confirms the Rundle’s commitment to crossing with Swiss into the future. As well as the above mentioned sires, the Rundle’s have their first heifers calving down from two live bulls, T Prunki Charlie (Prunki x Prodition) and T Pronto Jimbo (Pronto x Vinbrei), bull calves kept out of some further pure-bred purchased cows. They also have youngstock from another exciting bull that was bought from the Millers at Bridgewater, Sedgemoor RBZ Jupiter (Zeus x Webscott Playboy Jillian) to complement the Vigor’s, TD’s and Mojo’s of the same age. In the pot is Brookings and some Dally, which should ensure quality cattle at the farm for some time to come. KEVIN LANE

On 15th October 2012 the engagement was announced between Jonny Lochhead (past Chairman) and Katie Morrison. Katie is currently from Klmarnock, Ayrshire and works as a teacher in Glasgow. When she is not teaching she spends most of her time with her horses and her rescue springer spaniel “Snoopy”. Katie enjoys competing at show jumping competitions, and appears to have tidied Jonny up, he can now often be seen with his shirt tucked in, and even wearing a suit!! His influence on Katie seems to extend to getting her into the milking parlour and milking cows! As Katie says “Every day’s a school day!” Their wedding takes place on April 4th 2013, and we wish them much happiness in their future together.

COUNCIL MATTERS

Council met at the White Lion, Weston near Crewe on the 7th August 2012.

Present were John West, Kevin Thomas, Jonny Lochhead, Rob Darlington, Emma Bruce, Richard Johnson, John Ball, Rob McColm, Angus Dalton, Jenni Hobbs.

Excused: Michael Hussey, Mike Edwards, Richard Williams, Rob Morgan.

Brown Swiss bulls now have type information available on the DairyCo website for some bulls. It was put up by mistake, and is in its early stages, but is being left up for the time being. Marco winters will be contacted regarding calculation of PLI etc.

The National Sowcase was discussed with the 2012 show at Nantwich having been cancelled. Those who show and council have been disappointed with the coverage in the National Farming press, but because Nantwich is a local show, National coverage is not forthcoming. Various options were discussed including the Royal Welsh show, Dairy Expo at Carlisle, South West Dairy show and even the option of moving the Showcase around in different years. It was decided to pursue the option of the Livestock show in 2013 at the NEC, Birmingham on the 3rd & 4th July. It would have the best media coverage and easy access geographically. RABDF would be approached to see what kind of support could be had from them.

A change in show dress code was also discussed to attract attention in the showring and around the lines. Burgundy shirts would replace the white shirts and burgundy waistcoats with white trousers remaining as they are.

The Swiss Chimes has been an intermittent occurrence and this needs to be addressed. A December issue will be produced and discussions took place regarding advertising rates for members/non members, how to get more articles and the possibility of a yearbook. At least 4 issues per year are required to keep members in touch.

Dirk Werling will be presenting his work at the World Brown Swiss congress in St Gallen, Switzerland in December, members are to be informed in the Chimes and on the website about the event and Jenni Hobbs will keep a record of interest in visiting. The Society will help with information for anyone interested in going. The website is now being regularly updated.

A new Society logo is being designed to be used with Society clothing, it is nearly done and council had a last chance to give opinions before it was finished. One member had already ordered clothing.

Meeting closed.

Council met at the White Lion, Weston near Crewe on the 21st November 2012, short notice meeting

Present were John West, Kevin Thomas, Rob Darlington, John Ball, Angus Dalton, Jenni Hobbs.

Excused: Michael Hussey, Mike Edwards, Richard Williams, Jonathan Lochhead, Emma Bruce, Richard Johnson, Robert McColm, Rob Morgan.

Marco Winters has supplied information regarding PLI, more discussions need to take place to ensure the information on the DairyCo website is not misleading. Type information will remain available for viewing for the time being.

Holstein UK are moving to paperless registration, along with most of the other breeds. An animal will be registered in the same way as it is now but no Registration Certificate will be issued. Instead it will be available to view online with the owner having the ability to produce a more up to date certificate themselves when required. This system has been in operation in Europe for many years, and council has decided to adopt this system. Details to follow.

With 2013 being the 40th Anniversary of the Society, discussions took place on how to celebrate. A farm walk tied in with the AGM is a popular idea, it would be good to hold an Anniversary Dinner at some point to get members from around the country together. It was agreed to move the accounting end of year from January to April, allowing the AGM to take place over the summer months when members might have more time to attend. For 2013 the AGM will take place in May, with a farm walk and dinner being held later in the year, venues to be announced. For 2013 the National Showcase will be held at the Livestock Show at the NEC, Birmingham. The RABDF have been very forthcoming with ideas and support and in particular giving the breed press coverage.

The Swiss Chimes will go back to an A4 format and 4 issues will be produced each year. Members will be encouraged to give feedback and suggestions for content. First of these new issues to be the Winter 2012.

Six Society members will be travelling to Switzerland in December, including Chairman and Vice. While there they will meet with the European Federation to discuss among other things, ways in which the Federation can help the Society celebrate 40 years. A report of this trip will appear in the Spring Swiss Chimes. For anyone wishing to follow the show on 7th and 8th December go to http://www.schweizerbauer.ch/tiere/ausstellungen-p-18.html and there will be live updates with photos.

The new Society clothing with logo proved popular. The new show kit will comprise of a Burgundy society shirt with white jeans/trousers. The shirts will have the Anniversary logo embroidered on them for 2013. There will also be caps, bodywarmers, jackets etc available, order through the Society office.

There is to be an Honorary Member award, an annual award recognising the work and dedication of a Society member to the Brown Swiss breed here in the UK. Further information to follow in the Spring.

Meeting closed.

European Brown Swiss Judging and Classification Harmonisation 2012

On 12/13th April Italy played host to the Swiss nations in a beautiful Valley in the Sondrio region of the Italian Alps. On entering the Village of Grosio there is a sign says 586m (I’m guessing over 1800ft) and this is the bottom of the Alpine Valley!

I travelled with three Frenchmen led by Olivier Bullot and we met for lunch with Classifiers and Breeders from Italy, Germany/Bavaria, Switzerland and Slovenia at the lovely, family owned, Hotel Sassella. This is where the exceptional hospitality began. In fact in all my years on the road, I’ve never experienced the Hotel owner galloping up the stairs to meet you as you reached the next level on the lift!

The first farm we visited was the “Toni” farm a three generation family farm, milking 35 cows in an immaculate two storey, cream cow shed, with the youngstock on one side, in varying ages and the milkers on the other. On the end of the milking side were the milking parlour and dairy with Vincent and his family living in an apartment above.

The 35 cows were averaging 8021 kg at 3.95 bf and 3.56pt with a calving to conception average of 117 days and were fed a mix of 24kg maize silage, 6.2kg hay, silage & alfalfa and 7.5kg of hard feed.

The classification seminar was led by head classifier, Willy Schmitd and monitored by Martin Rust who was kind enough as interpret for me. There were cows tied up to a wall in the field and we were each handed a classification sheet for each animal. There were a few traits that we don’t use in UK and vice-versa though I found the system very easy to follow. Not everyone agreed totally with everything Willy said, but, bearing in mind that there were several different Classifiers from several countries, it was important that he led the seminar in a firm manner and I was impressed by the accuracy and consistency of the group as a whole.

The Classification system works on a percentage allocated to each linear trait which gets added up to make 25% Frame, 10% Rump, 25% Legs & Feet and 40% mammary.

The main trait differences I saw were: Rump Length(2%), which is measured using an actual ruler/gauge, Back Line(6%), a description of the strength and levelness through the spine, Hock Angle(8%) this is hock rather than leg set, Hock quality(4%) this is bone quality in the hock area, Fore Udder length(6%) this is in addition to fore udder attachment and then there is the “dreaded” Pastern Strength (6%).

I’m ashamed to say that apart from one other chap, I was the only person who wasn’t bi-lingual although I didn’t need an interpreter to tell me that Pastern Strength was the area where there were noticeable differences between the group!

I don’t know if these traits are of any great significance in the U.K. However there are some traits that we use that I think are important over here, in particular, Locomotion. The cows we scored were all tied up and we never had a chance to see them walk. The average herd size would be less than 25 cows with some tied up, so maybe it isn’t as relevant, however I think in our systems with 100 or more cows it is. The other traits we record are angularity (not Sharpness), bone quality and udder texture. To be fair, one of the fattest animals I saw, did actually have good udder quality, but, I felt it was mis-identified as a strong animal when it was just fat and also lost points for rear udder width(its best attribute) because its thighs were beefy, even though you could easily pull the udder tissue across its thighs. There was a cow the following morning that was incredibly strong yet still had beautiful dairyness. This cow had lots of bone but still excellent bone quality, so I could see that these kind of cows do really exist but get the same score for strength as the fat heifer on the first day.

Surreal !This is a word I think gets used too much! However, did I ever imagine I would be standing in a flat 3 acre field at the bottom of the Alps being offered Cheeses, Breads & Italian Sausage by people wearing the national/alpine dress with white socks up to their knees, playing the accordion to local tunes, judging cows amongst people of several nationalities and all of this underneath a concrete motorway flyover with the local villagers looking on?

On the first evening we had a short meeting to discuss how each country polices its classification. Most classifiers do between 4000 and 6000 animals each year. I picked up from this that the Swiss & Bavarians in particular monitor their Classifiers rigidly.

On the second day we travelled further up the valley to the area of Bormio for the Judges School. Here we judged four classes of cattle on two farms and everyone got to give reasons. I think both farms had built cowsheds out of industrial units or factories (both were lovely) The herds were Pedrini Pietro and Cascina Margherita, unfortunately I’m not able to translate any of the technical data for these herds. Again these herds were fed an excellent diet of maize, hay, alfalfa and silage and I also learned that the milkers go up into the Alps for around three months a year with youngstock going for six months,

On a lighter note, at the first farm we wore plastic over our shoes and when we finished we binned these and got in the car to get to the next. I had just clicked my seat belt and was just about to ask Olivier how far the next farm was when he said we were here, it was only 200yds across the field!! On the second farm there was a very steep concrete ramp going down underneath the grass field, it turns out there was a pig abattoir under the grass!

I’d like to thank Brown Swiss UK for allowing me to represent our country and experience scenery and hospitality like I’ve never seen before and would be delighted to do so in future.

The Brown Swiss Breed lost Two European Greats in 2012 Sturzenegger’s Gordon Belinda EX94, one of Europe’s finest Brown Swiss show cows who would surely have challenged for top honours at The Bruna. She was found dead in the barn, thought to have died from acidosis overnight. Born in September 2002 she was a Champion at both National and International level. She won many shows at regional level, but her best year was 2010 when on 6th February she was crowned Grand Champion at the European Championships in Verona, Italy. This of course means that she was the reigning European Champion until her unfortunate death. Having calved on April 19th 2012 she was targeting the European Championship in St Gallen 7/8th December where she would have been one of the favourites.

She was a winner several times in November and December 2010 and was Reserve Champion at the IGBS show in February 2011 watched by Jonny Lochhead and myself. Her last lactation was 10,810 kgs milk @ 4.25%F and 3.50%P. Not the milkiest cow but you had to admire her balance, her strength and power and her tightly attached udder, and this was 1,500kg more than her herd mates and done while constantly being shown.

Acqua a true Champion developing from a heifer in 2004 to a 96pt 6th calver in 2012

PTT Rhythm Acqua EX96 EX98MS, one of the few Brown Swiss cows who’s exploits can compare with Old Mill E Snickerdoodle. She began winning Championships as a heifer in milk in 2004, winning the prestigious Gotthard Open, a National Heifer Show.

Page 31: Inside - The Brown Swiss Breed December 12.pdf · All that’s left for me to do is wish you a Merry Christmas and a drier New Year. ... Kedar Nofak Ricka. We already had ... relatively

This was just the start of an amazing show career which made her well known and admired all over Europe and even across the water in America. She was Champion at the IGBS show 2008, Brown Swiss Champion in the Swiss Expo Lausanne in 2009, and later that year she was again Champion of the Swiss Classic 2009. She was again Brown Swiss Champion at Swiss Expo Lausanne 2011 and Reserve Champion in 2012. With a highest lactation of 14,416 kgs @ 3.86%F and 3.91%P, and a lifetime total of 92,086 kgs milk she was also a big production cow, and didn’t she look it.

On a Happier Note...........

On 14th October 2012, Old Mill E Snickerdoodle had her 14th Birthday.

This amazing cow has been Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo 6 times, Supreme Champion in 2003 and Reserve Supreme in 2008 and 2009. She was class winner at Expo 8 times and is the only cow of any breed to win every milking class at Expo from Senior 2yr old to Component Merit Cow making her undefeated in milking form. She has also been voted All-American 8 times.

To date Snickerdoodle has more than 50 daughters registered around the Globe, 4 of which are in the UK and more than 110

offspring in total. Congratulations to Allen Bassler and family on breeding, raising and showing this wonderful cow. She resides with the Basslers today.

Happy Birthday Snick!

VIEWPOINT We would like to give members an opportunity to express their thoughts on a subject, based around cows and breeding, that is close to their heart, It can be a totally new subject or a response to an earlier topic. You can put your name to it or remain anonymous, if you wish. Just send your thoughts to Jenni at [email protected] in time for the next issue in the Spring. Here’s one to get you started.

Penguins, Princesses & Profit A couple of years ago, I watched a programme about the Emperor penguin in the Antarctic. What was most incredible was their breeding. After a single egg is laid, the male penguin stays on the ice with the egg nestled in his down and resting on the top of his feet. If the egg, even momentarily, touches the ground it freezes solid and the chick dies. The male stays there, unmoving, for many weeks, throughout winter and with temperatures down to –60C. When the female returns, the egg is very carefully transferred, hopefully without mishap. The Em-peror penguin has survived for thousands of years de-spite such extreme and hostile breeding conditions.

Compare this to many of today’s modern dairy cows. Despite diets to suit the cow’s needs at every stage of lactation, very favourable housing conditions, ever more comfortable cubicles, on tap veterinary attention etc many herds fail to achieve pregnancy rates above 20%. It wasn’t always like this though.

When I first started managing a herd of cows, we didn’t PD—a cow was as-sumed in calf if it didn’t come bulling again and, invariably, it was. In nature, if a male and female can’t hack it in the breeding stakes, and leave no viable off-spring, that’s the end of their line. A pair of Emperor penguins could be the finest of their species, with the brightest plumage, be the fastest swimmers—in fact be the William & Kate of the Antarctic! - it makes no differ-ence if they leave no offspring.

The state of fertility in many of today’s herds raises many questions. Has the last 30 years breeding been as suc-cessful as we like to think? Have we concentrated on the right traits? Are our herds as profitable, as a result? Have we learnt any lessons?

I would suggest that, of all the figures in a bull’s proof, the fertility index , often overlooked, is by far the most important. No milk is produced at all, unless a heifer gets in calf at least once, and it is widely regarded that a cow has to have

Page 34: Inside - The Brown Swiss Breed December 12.pdf · All that’s left for me to do is wish you a Merry Christmas and a drier New Year. ... Kedar Nofak Ricka. We already had ... relatively

3 calves just to cover it’s rearing costs and make a profit—some 40% of UK cows don’t even mange that! Fertility is absolutely crucial to the profitability of a dairy herd, more so than even milk yield.

Top 3 Brown Swiss for fertility—August 2012

Years ago, information about a bull was accompanied by a picture of his dam and her production details, which would usually involve 6, 7, and upto 10, lacta-tions—proof that she had at least ‘done the business’. Then proven perform-ance was replaced, as the main aim of breeding programmes, by the search for ever increasing rate of genetic change. This is fine, IF it is heading in the right direction for all the traits involved in profitable milk production. The effects of using the ‘wrong’ bull for a couple of generations, can take many more genera-tions to rectify.

Not all countries have followed this path however. The Scandinavian countries have concentrated their breeding programmes far more on the functional traits, especially fertility , and are now reaping the rewards. This has also happened in New Zealand where , in their block calving systems, replacement heifers are bred from the cows that calve at the start of the block—those that have exhib-ited good fertility and held first time—hence they are automatically breeding fer-tility into their herds from the female side, aswell as the male.

A friend of mine has a local AI business and can also obtain semen for his cus-tomers should they wish. Recently, he visited a herd that had bought the semen of a particular bull off him, some years ago. There were still many daughters of the bull in question in the herd, that were powerful, well put together, producing well and calving regularly—all adding up to very profitable cows –and the farmer was very pleased with them. My friend offered to get him some more semen from the same bull at a reduced price, as he was now ‘ an older bull’, but the farmer declined, saying that he was looking to use semen from young Genomic sires instead!

To my mind, this only proves the power of advertising over common sense and provides the perfect answer to the last of my earlier questions.

MARKET SALE REPORTS

BROWN SWISS TOP COLOURED BREED KALEIDOSCOPE SALE AT 2500 GNS AT BEESTON

A great entry around the 150 head mark were consigned to the Autumn Coloured Breeds Sale and Kaleidoscope of Colour Sale at Beeston on Friday, 19th October. Top price once again went to the Brown Swiss Breed and it was an entry from Mike Hussey’s noted Cancourt Herd based near Swindon, Wiltshire that claimed top honours. Cancourt Sasha born in November last year is daughter of the homebred Diablo son, Cancourt Sultan and out of a Good Plus 84 milking heifer by Vigor and then there are eight generations of Excellent cows in direct line. The purchasers were Messrs Williamson of Calthwaite, Penrith. Jack and Barclay Taylor offered a pair of very smart twin in‐calf heifers; they were daughters of Top Acres Power Surge and both were carrying services (sexed) for November calving by Red Brae Prelude Zeus. Both these heifers were snatched up by Rob McColm from Stranraer at 2350 and 2100 gns.

AVERAGES: 15 Coloured Breed Milking Cows and Heifers £1307.70; 17 Coloured Breed Served Heifer

£1293.29; 2 Brown Swiss Maiden Heifers £1968.75. I Brown Swiss Bull £1050.00.

KIVELLS – Sale Report 15th October The trade for the 91 Organic In calf heifers was electric and probably the dearest trade for In Calf heifers seen for some time with many buyers going home empty handed. Top was £2000 for a Brown Swiss cross heifer sired by Oak Forest Cosmos and she sold due in November to Holstein. Sold for RG Denning & Son of Truro.

Blistering Trade for Brown Swiss X at Wilson Dispersal Top of £2260, 10 Past £2000

The dispersal sale of the entire herd on behalf of the Wilson family of Fradswell, Stafford, which included a good proportion of Brown Swiss and Montbeliard X, met a fantastic crowd and a phenomenal trade seeing 10 animals pass the £2000 mark. Buyers came from far and wide drawn by the variety on offer, however, it was the Brown Swiss X that dominated the day’s trade taking the top price and second highest price at £2260 and £2240 respectively. Top call was for a fresh second calver by Constance Rudyard, she had given 6780kg as a heifer and was sold giving 32.2kg, clinched by Kevin White of Ashbourne, who also went on to take the second calver by Sunmade Garbo Vanguard at £2240. The Montbeliarde crosses also sold exceptionally well with a September calved heifer giving 35.5kg realising £2180 to the Brookes family at Uttoxeter. Next in line at £2160 was the first animal through the ring, a red and white Holstein by Lion King. Also at the same price was a stylish third calver which went to Messrs Minshall of Tean. Bulk buyers, Brown Swiss enthusiasts, Messrs Jerman, took a lorry load back to their herd in Welshpool, with others travelling to Leicestershire, Warwickshire and Norfolk. Overall a superb days trade which saw the milkers average £1335, without heifer calves, and £1408 with calves included. 133 Cows & Heifers In‐Milk and In‐Calf to £2260 Average£1335 without calves Average£1408 with calves Auctioneers: Bagshaws

Jay Fledderjohann –

our American judge at Nantwich and the Livestock Event I have recently returned from my 3rd judging assignment in the U.K. Each visit has been fantastic and exciting. On the first visit Richard Johnson was my very capable tour guide. He took me to a number of interesting well managed dairy farms. I was surprised how similar they were to many dairies in the USA. I met breeders Lochheads, Wests , McColms, Daltons, among others. Just as I became used to your bad habit of driving on the wrong side of the road my whirlwind visit was over. My wife joined me on my second visit. The cattle at the Nantwich Show were outstanding.

I was so pleased as a judge to have the high number of quality animals to pick my class winners from and the outstanding individual Lochhead cow who became the Champion Cow. It was great to see the great camaraderie among all breeders. They enjoyed being at the Show and seemed to really enjoy each other’s company. Again Richard Johnson became our tour guide for several days. We visited with his family at their home. Then we were off (much to my total surprise!!) to the land of James Herriot. He of course is the famous vet who’s every word I absorbed from his famous books. I never imagined that day we would pay a surprise visit to his office and to his part of the Scotland countryside that I had only dreamed of seeing!(Well done Richard!). The Edinburgh Castle was also a great stop and memorable visit. (Not many castles in Ohio, USA!).

The third visit just completed had my wife and I arriving in Birmingham Airport. We knew someone would eventually pick us up, we just weren’t sure when. Before we knew it Izzy Whittaker arrived and whisked us off to the Hotel. We had never encountered the system of using the room card to activate the rooms electronically. After a few embarrassing minutes, and a few questions asked we suddenly had “the lights on” in our room. What a relief!

The Show Arena and the cattle shown there were outstanding! Once the Show began the Maiden classes were very well presented with top level type throughout the class. The Jr. Champion “Wonderment” Of Wests had just a bit more size, balance, and length. The Reserve Champion heifer was a close placing, she had such angularity, and style and paraded on such a great set of feet and legs for the McColm Family. The heifer in milk class was also strong with the real dairy, silky uddered KSD Felicia who won the class and had best udder. In the 2nd and 3rd calvers was the lovely Etvei Jemma. She seemed to improve with each hour

and each time in the ring as the show went on. The udder was so high and wide in the rear and smooth with outstanding veining in the fore udder.

In the 4 and over calvers was the contender for Champion, Constance Amelia. She was sharp, angular, and well balanced throughout. I was so proud to place Jemma in the interbreeds show and heard fantastic comments from the judges. I think some had no idea that good Brown Swiss like her existed and some hardly knew how to place her. (I think some placed her a little low without really looking at her) My Show Steward Phil Oliver also deserves credit for all his help and assistance with the judging. Again the camaraderie and the preparation of the cattle were outstanding!

The Etvei sired cow shown by Emma Bruce and Rob Darlington was so beautifully balanced she was a pleasure to judge and to name as the Champion. It made me proud as a breeder to see her in the interbreeds show and to more than hold her own against the other breeds! Congratulations to them!

The 3 evening meals with breeders and judges was wonderful! It is such a good chance to get to know one another and make friendships that last long past the judging.

We were then off to London for 3 days of being a” tourist”. We saw a lot of sights there and were kind of the envy of our friends because we had been to London! We are now back at home busy with cows and crops and grandkids. We often talk about our trips to the U.K. and the unbelievable kindness and hospitality of everyone we met there! We look forward to returning soon! If you wish to chat you can reach us at [email protected]

Thanks from the USA!

Welsh Dairy Show Judges Report

In-Calf Heifers

First up were 4 in-calf heifers - A very handy winner (Elite Explosion Heke), the leader a little bit older than the rest of the class, but so well grown for her age, giving her the advantage for her refinement, particularly in the inner thigh and down through the hock and strength out through the pasterns. 2 over 3 a very close placing, just the way she moved and a bit more openness in the rib. A more desirable rump structure and tail setting justified placing 3 over 4. Cow in Calf

Giving the nod to Elite Brown Swiss with Quarry Rose Lee this tall deep bodied cow showing a great deal of breed type and dairy character. Heifers In-Milk

Next up two lovely heifers in-milk Mark & Sian entry – Quarry Surge Sian, just having the advantage of youthfulness with over Alan and Carolyn’s entry – Quarry Explosion Liz. Champion Heifer

Quarry Surge Sian over Elite Explosion Heke, as she was in-milk and so strong in her udder attachments with most desirable teat placement. Cow In-Milk with 2nd Calf

This went to Quarry Luke Duchess. A very close placing. A little more girth and substance over a more refined entry from Steven Williams (great to see him in the Brown Swiss ring) with Quarry Playboy Whisky. This cow definitely best udder in class. It was this exceptional mammary that warranted placing her over the great deep bodied cow Quarry Cosmos Heke who calved February. Cow in Milk with 3rd Calf Here we had an easy winner in Quarry Luke Lovely (this cow really turns me on!). Real functional well balanced, low maintenance cow. With great legs and feet and a dream udder. It was in the mammary system that warrantied placing her over this Blessing Ensign Brother daughter from Alan & Carolyn Davies – Quarry Broker Liz. Senior Cow In-Milk It was in this class that I found my Champion – Quarry Zeus Orange An extra calf yes, but it was this diaryness and great frame showing more definition of spine and longer, deeper rib over my previous class winner Quarry Luke Lovely. Admittedly she was longer and snugger in the fore udder but just lacked a little bit of expertise on the halter.

The Society would like to thank Oggie Smith for accepting the invitation and his professional and enthusiastic manner and accurate reasons through the day.
