W elcome to the July/August edition of Inside Magazine, the local magazine for Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill.

Unfortunately, I haven’t had time to write my usual Editor’s Letter. I’ve been away on a course about meeting deadlines. It was extremely useful, as it helped to show how a customer-focussed forward-facing brand such as ours has core values that act as a focus in everything that we do.

Naturally, we broke into splinter groups to workshop our thoughts. Then we brainstormed and did one heck of a lot of blue-sky-thinking. There was even a team-led lateral-planned seminar about how to use meaningless hyphens to impress people, which I found very thought-focussing and content-centred.

I’m brimming with ideas now, but, alas, it is too late to use them.

T erence Casey retired from the London Stock Exchange in

2002 and researched his family background. Many years of research inspired this historical novel. Terence Casey's forebears endured many hardships during Ireland's most painful history, including the famines, endemic illness and eviction from their homes, matters which were exacerbated by the injustice of an oppressive political system that enforced taxation and the exportation of their food to Britain. The narrator of the story is Patrick, a poor farmer from County Cork whose country cottage is featured on the front cover of the book. Other perspectives are provided by way of letters, such as the letter written by Patrick's beloved brother, Owen, who was unjustly found guilty of a minor crime that resulted in his transportation to Australia.

However, he did well in Australia and was able to return to Ireland. Owen died having returned to Australia to dig for gold during the gold rush and clashed with the Colonial troops. A letter by a leading member of the emancipation of Ireland from English domination, is written by Michael Doheny in appreciation for the hospitality he received at Patrick's home is included (as anyone involved in this movement was in grave danger).

A similar letter from John Devoy, a contemporary of Michael Doheny, also involved in the campaign for an Irish free state shows the level of involvement that the author's family had in the underground movement and the dangers it posed. A beautiful poem by Thomas Reidy is included about the area in which the story is set. The tale is woven with great affection and attention to detail. The author is rightly proud of his roots. All people should learn about the plight

of Irish people at this time in history.

The author was born in Highbury North London, and moved to Friday Hill, E4 in 1960. He played football for many teams in Walthamstow and Chingford. His mother and father were both originally from Ireland. His mother had seen the terrible Civil War at first hand and left Ireland at the first opportunity.

Terence left school at 15, and after doing an assortment of jobs including working as an engineer on building the Victoria Line he joined a Stock Exchange Company. Working his way up

the ladder, he became eventually Global Head of operations for a Hong Kong Company. His hobbies are gardening, athletics and his two granddaughters.

A lot can happen in forty minutes. Almost half a game of football. 2 episodes of Emmerdale without

the ads. A decent meal plus some of the washing up. A lot can happen in forty minutes, but seldom in cricket’s purest form. Forty minutes of first class cricket can seem, even to lovers of the game, like something of an eternity. But not all forty minutes are the same. You don’t need to understand the arcane laws of cricket to follow this story. Just bear with me, and try to picture Brighton in May 1911. The situation of the game is this. Nottinghamshire are about to lose. No doubt about it. All that Sussex have to do is dismiss three of Nottinghamshire’s weakest batsmen, and they’ve got all day to do what ought to take ten minutes. So it’s as good as done. Might as well go home now. Start the bus, as they say.

Then something unusual happened. One of those weaker batsmen was a young man named Ted Alletson. That morning in 1911, Alletson strode

out to the middle to endure the inevitable. He stood to face the bowling. But the inevitable did not come to pass. Something very unusual was about to happen.

He had had an unremarkable career. Born in 1884, the son of a wheelwright on the Duke of Portland’s estate in Nottinghamshire, he played cricket for the local boys’ team. He was quite good, mainly as a bowler. At the age of 19 he got a post as a professional cricketer, but the workload in those days was severe and Alletson succumbed to lumbago and went to work in his father’s workshop. He continued to play cricket, however, and, in 1906, began as a professional for Nottinghamshire. Again, he was quite good. But not really any more than that. Quite good. Faint praise. History’s epitaph. The unwritten words on the tombs of the many.

He was a tall man for the era, well over 6 feet, broad and with a deep voice. He probably would not have played against Sussex had the first choice eleven all been fit. But an injury saw him picked to play. In his first innings, he made only 7. (That’s not many, to those who don’t know their cricket – it’s not even ‘quite good’.) Sussex, in reply, made loads. Well behind, Nottinghamshire, to save the game, would have to bat a long time.

Instead, they lost their top batsmen cheaply.

Alletson had been bathing in the sea that last morning, but had to return to the ground to help his side try and save the game. In the fifty minutes before lunch, he played quite well. Quite well. Nottinghamshire had a slender lead, but so slender that Sussex could expect to win comfortably. If they could only dismiss the last men. Notts would bat for only another 40 minutes after lunch. But, during those 40 minutes, something unusual, something unprecedented, something almost impossible occurred. Alletson scored a further 142 runs in that period, to make 189. It was the most brutal batting ever seen, executed by a man who was only ever quite good. He regularly hit the ball out of the ground. He smashed a clock-face. The Sussex bowlers found excuses not to bowl at him. He scored 34 runs from one over – a new record. He was, briefly, so much more than quite good. He was quite extraordinary. He saved the match with his only innings of note. He never played like that again. He retired from cricket 3 years later.

After his cricketing career, Alletson served in the

War, returning home in 1919 to work in a colliery near Worksop. They hadn’t invented Celebrity Big Brother, you see.

History is full of people who have shone but briefly, and of others who have only ever been second best. Only a few, the Mozarts, the Einsteins, are great in their lives and remain shining brightly ever after. I’ll try to introduce you, over the months, to others like Alletson, musicians, writers, also-rans and runners-up - the Quite Good.

Every Sunday & Bank Holiday afternoon from 2pm to 5:30pm during the summer (April until October) train rides are avail-able at 50p or £1 depending on the track (1000 foot long 5" raised level track and a 3000 foot long 7¼" ground level track).

During late July and August (school holidays), rides are also available on Wednesday after-noons 2:00pm - 4:30pm. Private hire events can also be arranged.
