Director’s Corner Hello Everyone! Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Stephen Durrell and I have been asked by our Governor to serve as the new Executive Director of your Kansas Lottery! While I am thrilled to be offered such an exciting position at the Lottery, I am not new here! I have been the Attorney/Chief Counsel here at the Lottery for the last 11 years. It has been a rewarding place to be and as I step into this new role, I am confident it will continue to be a great place for our staff to work! I would like to take a minute to thank you, our players, for your continued support of the Kansas Lottery. Without you, as they say, our job wouldn’t be possible. We all strive to make our games enjoyable, fair and exciting for those who want to play. As we move into the future, we have some exciting things planned here at the Lottery. First, we are beginning to roll out our new Kansas Lottery Vending Machines. These machines will offer you more, easier ways to get your tickets when our retailer friends are experiencing high volume sales times at the counter. Please also remember to visit any of our four Lottery Gaming Facility locations for additional fun and excitement: Boot Hill Casino in Dodge City, Hollywood Casino in Kansas City, Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane and Kansas Crossing Casino in Pittsburg! We also have many new games, trips, prizes and exciting adventures planned for the upcoming year. We hope you will join us in these exciting times and enjoy these new directions with us! Thanks again for playing the Kansas Lottery!

Traditional lottery sales in Fiscal Year 2019 were $295.3 million. Lottery sales were 9.79 percent higher than in FY18 when sales were $268.9 million. “It’s the Kansas Lottery’s mission to engage our players in a fun and secure way while also doing our best to try and maximize a return to the State,” said Kansas Lottery Executive Director Stephen Durrell. “We do that by looking at ways to keep our players interested and excited about our games. The Lottery is continuing to add new games and second-chance promotions that offer unique experiences, and we thank all of our players and retailers for their continued support.” The Kansas Lottery also transferred a combined $8.3 million to the Problem Gambling and Addictions Grant Fund. The transfer included $80,000 from traditional lottery games and $8.22 million from state-owned and operated casino gaming, as required by state law. “The Kansas Lottery values its relationship with the four managers the State contracted with to manage these casinos,” Durrell continued. “The casinos generate millions of dollars for the state and helps the Lottery accomplish its mission by maximizing the State’s revenue.”

BIG WINNERS!Powerball Ticket Worth $1 Million Finally Claimed While the 4th of July weekend celebrations came to an end, one Sedgwick County resident was just starting to celebrate after becoming the Sunflower State’s newest millionaire!“My cheeks are starting to hurt from smiling so much,” the winner exclaimed. “I’m just overwhelmed with joy!” The lucky Kansan anonymously claimed a Powerball ticket worth $1 million more than six months after the December 29, 2018 drawing. The winner matched five-of-six numbers. The winning numbers in the drawing were 12-42-51-53-62 with a Powerball of 20. The winner explained they didn’t know there was an unclaimed ticket out there and they were in possession of it. “The ticket just got caught in the mix of my receipt drawer and I saw it sitting there and pulled it out and looked at it and it said ‘12-29-2018’ so I thought ‘oh wow, I have to go scan this.’”After scanning the ticket, the lucky player still didn’t know what they had won so they logged onto the Kansas Lottery’s website and saw multiple articles about an unclaimed $1 million Powerball ticket sold in south central Kansas. “I originally thought maybe it was $5,000 or $10,000 or something like that, but once I pulled it up on the website and it said ‘$1 million unclaimed Powerball ticket in south central Kansas’ I thought ‘that’s me,’” the winner said with a smile. “It wasn’t real for me until I walked into this office and they gave me a receipt for winning and said congratulations this is what you’ve won!” The winner said they planned to invest the money in their growing family’s future.Game: Powerball – Prize: $1,000,000Retailer: QuikTrip 329R, 1620 S Oliver, Wichita

Meade Woman Claims $25,000 Top Prize Some people say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but for one Meade woman, skipping breakfast turned into a $25,000 win! “It’s unbelievable,” said Jennifer Fischer, “I checked that ticket so many times!”Fischer explained she and her husband go out for breakfast most Sunday mornings. However, when their regular breakfast spot was packed, they decided to drive down the street to buy sandwiches to take home. “Normally after we go to breakfast, we go buy lottery tickets,” she explained. “We already had $15 worth of tickets to cash in.” The couple bought three tickets including one $5 Kansas City Chiefs instant scratch ticket. Once at home, Fischer said she forgot about the tickets until her husband asked if she had scratched the tickets off yet. “I looked at the Chiefs ticket and took it over by the kitchen door for better light. I looked at the ticket again and said, ‘oh my God! oh my God!’ My husband asked ‘what?’ So, I handed him the ticket, shaking like a leaf, and said ‘look for number 39.’ He looked at it and said ‘that says $25,000!’ and I said ‘I know it does,’” Fischer explained with laughter. “It was a sheer shock!” Fischer said the couple owns a food truck, so they planned to use part of their winnings to pay off their debt and then go to Las Vegas.Game: $5 Kansas City Chiefs – Prize: $25,000 Retailer: Love’s Country Store 116, 115 N. Sapphire 7s Turns Tide for Mitchell County Woman with $27,777 Win! The sound of ocean waves crashing on the beach is a sound Connie Jones has never heard before in-person, but thanks to a $5 Sapphire 7s instant scratch ticket and a $27,777 win, a trip to the ocean is something the Mitchell County resident can now cross off her bucket list. “My husband and I were driving back home from Wichita when we stopped to get gas and I went inside to get some things,” Jones said. “When I was checking out, I noticed the Sapphire 7s ticket. I decided I wanted to play it so I bought just one ticket.” Jones added she didn’t scratch the ticket off until a few days later. “I got about halfway down the ticket when I matched three gold bars in a row and it said that was a top prize winner,” Jones eagerly described. “I couldn’t believe it. I started screaming and it scared my husband and son who came running into the room to check on me! Once they saw the ticket, they got excited with me.” Jones planned on using the winnings to pay off some medical debt and take a long overdue vacation with her husband for their 40th wedding anniversary. Lyons Woman Claims $20,000 Top Prize Restless isn’t the way most people would describe a beautiful summer weekend, however, that is exactly how Patti Kreis would describe this past weekend. The Lyons resident waited more than 48 hours to claim the $20,000 top prize she won playing the $2 Double Bonus Crossword instant scratch game. “I didn’t sleep great that night. I was too excited to relax. It didn’t feel real to me,” Kreis said with a laugh. “I kept re-checking the ticket just to make sure I wasn’t crazy.” Kreis explained she bought four tickets and once she started scratching them, she thought the tickets were non-winners until she started scratching the third ticket. “I just kept finding letters and making complete words. When I got done, I counted nine complete words and my husband and I were so excited to win $2,000!” After double checking the ticket, Kreis noticed she missed the “I” in another word, meaning the ticket wasn’t a $2,000 winner, but a $20,000 winner! “I just jumped up and hugged my husband,” Kreis said. “I’m still so excited! It’s all such a whirlwind.” Kreis said she planned to use her winnings to pay off her debt and put the rest into her savings. Game: $2 Double Bonus Crossword – Prize: $20,000 Retailer: Yesway Store 1115, 100 South Grand Street, Lyons

Monday Morning Coffee Wish Comes True for Olathe Woman It was another typical Monday morning for Tiffany Bergonzoni as she sat at her kitchen table drinking her coffee and trying to prepare for another work week. Daydreaming about winning the lottery turned into a reality when Bergonzoni realized she won $10,000 on the $20 Diamond 7’s instant scratch game. “It was a crazy feeling” Bergonzoni exclaimed. “I play scratch tickets a few times a week, but I’ve never won anything like this before,” she added. “I only bought the one Diamond 7 ticket this time as well.
