Nicki Gillis is one of Australia’s most successful independent artistes. She has had numerous No. 1s around the world; Nicki hosts a country music television show which is broadcast throughout Europe; she is the principal singer in “Carole King’s Tapestry—The Concert”; and she is the producer and main singer in “Herstory” - a history of wom-en in Rock. In addition, Nicki is the General Manager for Vintage FM in Western Sydney and runs her own music school teaching vocals to aspiring singers.

She is also the recipient of numerous awards across al different genres of music, including the 2006 Blue Mountains Blues/Jazz Music Award; the 2007 Coopers Golden Saddle Award; the 2009 Frank Ifield International Spur Award; and in 2011 she received the Australian Entertainment Industry ‘Mo’ Award for Best Performer or Band.

Join us at Dural Country Club as Nicki presents an evening of exceptional music in a Double Bill featuring a tribute to Carole King featuring her “Tapestry” album in the first half of the night and a 70s Girl Show in the second half where she explores the songs that influenced her musical career.

“Tapestry” is the second album recorded by Carole King and is one of the best-selling albums of all time, with over 25 million copies sold. It received four Grammy Awards in 1972, including Album of the Year. Nicki performs this quintessential Carole King album LIVE in a sophisticated, “true to the original sound” format as well as some of the songs that King wrote for other artistes such as “The Locomotion” (Little Eva/Kylie Minogue), “I’m Into Something Good” (Herman’s Hermits/Marianne Faithfull), “Pleasant Valley Sunday” (The Monkees) and “You’ve Got A Friend” (James Taylor.

After the break Nicki returns with “70s Girl”. This half of the show is Nicki’s answer to the popular media question, “Who are your influences?”, which she gets asked on a regular basis. It is the story of a young girl with stars in her eyes, growing up in Western Australia and features songs performed and made famous by: Linda Ronstadt, Cher, Carly Simon, Dolly Parton, Karen Carpenter, Suzi Quattro, Gloria Gaynor, Janis Ian, Roberta Flack, Mama Cass, Fleet-wood Mac, Janis Joplin, Donna Summer, Joan Jett, Joni Mitchell and more.

Tickets are now available from the club for $25.00 or $30.00 on the night.

News from Our Sports Clubs

The Minor Singles Competition Final was contested by Marilyn Bonvino and Cheryle Hobart. Unfortu-nately the weather played tricks – rain, cloud, breeze, sun, cold and warm – with rain interrupting play for a while. However, both ladies took this in their stride and each player had a really good game! The scores were level six or seven times throughout their game. Cheryle was in the lead for a good part of the game, and at 21-all it was anyone’s game, but in the last couple of ends Marilyn’s experience stood her in good stead. Congratulations to our new Minor Singles winner – Marilyn Bonvino, and to our de-serving Runner-up Cheryle Hobart! We are very proud of Diane Trovato, who was selected by Mitchell District to play in one of the six Mitchell teams competing in the annual Mitchell/Nepean District Challenge Day. Diane travelled all the way to Austral Bowling Club where the Challenge Day was held. She had a very enjoyable day, and our Mitchell District was successful in winning the Challenge. Congratulations to Di and all the Mitchell Dis-trict ladies who secured the win! The Final of our Drawn Triples Competition was played recently. Mei Yu, Kath Sach and Terri Hezlett pitted their skills against Margaret Holden, Judith Harris and Ruth Keene. Congratulations to Ruth’s team, who were the winners on the day, and to Terri’s team, who were the Runners-up. On Sunday October 20th, the two DCC lawn bowling clubs combined to run a Bunnings Bbq fundraiser.

The day was very well prepared and organised, there were enough helpers to cook and serve, and the day was a big success, raising funds to assist us with our pay-ments to the greenkeeper. A big thank you to all who contributed! On Monday 21st October, some of our ladies attended the Mitchell District Veter-an’s Day at The Hills Bowling Club. In the morning, two greens were filled with la-dies enjoying a happy, friendly game of bowls, which was followed by a delicious lunch, a guest speaker, and lots of prizes to be won. We thank Mitchell District for holding this special day to recognise our over 70 year old players.

Some of our members have enjoyed playing at Carnivals at other Clubs, even as far away as Mudgee. We also have some ladies who play in Education Bowls competitions. This year was the 62nd Test Series against Queensland Teachers Bowls Club. NSW Education Bowling Club (open to all bowlers who have or are receiving a salary/wage from Education) was successful in winning all 3 test matches. This was the 5th series in a row that NSW have won. Queensland did that in the 70’s. Well done NSW! From time to time we have a social day out. On Friday 25th October a group of our ladies organised to car pool to travel to the Berowra Waters Fish Café where they enjoyed lunch, a good chat and each other’s company. The weather was a bit hot, but the food and company were both great!

We are nearing the end of our main competitions for the year, of which we have had some very inter-esting results with some of our new members performing well. The Men’s Triples started on Saturday, 21st September, with the finals played on Saturday, 12th October between the team of Phil Bonvino, Paddy Gaul and Ron Goulding playing against Keven Keene, Stuart Yeend and Ray Vindin. After a hard fought match, Phil’s team came home the winners. Congratulations to both teams and well done! On Saturday, 19th October we had six of our new players competing in the District Rookies Tournament at The Hills Bowling Club. Phil Laing, KT Lau, Ron and Alex Goulding, Andrew Dadley and Graham Collits played in the tournament over two weekends. The singles on the first weekend and the doubles on the following weekend. One of our bowlers, Andrew, got through to the quarter finals in the singles. Results for the doubles will be published next month. The Men’s and Women’s Bowling Clubs combined to run a very successful BBQ at Bunnings on Sunday, 20th October, with the proceeds going towards mainte-nance costs of the bowling greens. Thank you to all those who helped. We have had our Greenkeeper’s contract re-signed for the next 12 months. The Number 2 green is now in the process of being renovated which will take about two months. Following this the Number 1 green will be renovated. The Club mixed social days are Wednesday (mufti) with a 12:30 p.m. start and Saturday (uniform) with a 12:30 start. Visitors are very welcome. Cards are called 15 minutes before the start. For anyone wishing to learn or play bowls, free coaching is available, or for a game of Barefoot Bowls, please contact Doug Farlow on 0439 648 696. John Vickery

Our members have been chasing the fish with some good catches. The charters off Terigal have been successful with best results in deep water. This has been the case lately with the skipper finding decent-sized fish further out than normal. With the weather warming up we are looking forward to landing some fish for the table

Our competitions for the year are over and the winners of each category will be presented with their trophies at our end of year dinner. The results are very close. Good to see our anglers fighting it out. We have accurate digital scales so it takes the guesswork out of it. Have a look at the trophy cabinet at the entrance to the Club where you will see the names of our champions on our collection of silverware. The heaviest fish of the year is wide open. It can be won by skill or pot luck. We are getting a good response from new members joining the Dural Country Club. Out of those new members we get four or five ticking the Fishing Club box. I contact them and explain our program for te yar. They really appreciate the contact follow up. The Fishing Club has a good social team, organising weekends away, social BBQs and families join in on the fun.
