The day started off with a War Time sing along, residents sang along to songs that took them back to their childhood. We also had a reminiscing session with a box full of 1940s goodies which we were kindly loaned by Erewash Museum, Doris had a giggle when she tried on an old tin helmet. After lunch, everyone was treated to Afternoon Tea with some lovely homemade cakes that were beautifully decorated by one of our residents, Joan. We also had entertainment from one

On Wednesday 22nd May, we held a special Bistro Night with a Pie & Pea theme. For starters we served either Leek & Potato Soup or Garlic Mushrooms. The main course was the traditional Pie & Peas with Mint Sauce. For dessert, it was a choice of Baileys & Chocolate Cheesecake or Banoffee Pie. It was also special because it was Linda’s birthday, we decorated her table with birthday banners to make her feel extra special. We brought out a birthday cake & all sang Happy Birthday to her, she said it was a lovely evening. Thank you to all who came, we raised £60 for the residents fund. Keep your eyes peeled for the next evening which

will be a Chinese theme!

Staff Birthdays

This month, we have been focusing largely on holidays as many of our staff and resident’s family members are making their holiday plans so we discussed where everyone had been on holiday. Jess received some brilliant feedback and couldn’t believe some of the places our residents have been. Roy Brown has travelled the world when he was in the Navy & even spent over 2 years in Malta. Gillian has also visited lots of places as her dad ran the company, Horton’s Coaches. She still has every fridge magnet from everywhere she has visited.

We’ve also been doing the usual arts & crafts, games, quizzes baking & pampering activities that everyone enjoys!

What’s been happening A Trip Out for Lunch

Jessica & two residents, Linda & Joan have been out for dinner at the Red Lion in Ripley for a change of scenery. Linda chose a Thai Green Curry, it brought back some lovely memories for her as she is originally from Malaysia. She told Jess about all the different rices from her country & that yellow rice is coloured with saffron & very popular in Malaysia. Joan chose Lasagne & enjoyed every mouthful. We all agreed to do it again sometime as it was a

lovely meal.

This year, Ashmere Care Homes are taking part in the first ever National Care Home Open Day on Friday 21st June. The idea behind the day is to encourage local people to visit care homes in their neighbourhood and work together to develop better relationships between the home and the community.

For far too long the care home sector has been affected by the negative press generated by a small number of badly run homes, and we want to show people what our care homes are really about. We want everyone to realise that care homes really can be inspiring places, full of unique, intelligent and charming characters,

and run by special people that really do care.

As part of the Open Day, all our homes have various exciting events planned as you’ll see below. We want to welcome everyone to show your support to our care homes & make new friends. We hope to see you there!

GOSSIP

Dorothy Thomas from Valley Lodge found out this poem which she would like to share with everyone. If you have a poem you would like to share, why not speak to your Activities Co-ordinator or Home Manager.

What do you see? What do you see, nurse, what do you see?

What are you thinking when you’re looking at me? A crabby old woman, not very wise,

Uncertain of habit, with far away eyes.

Who dribbles her food and makes no reply When you say in a loud voice, “I do wish you’d try?”

Who seems not to notice the things that you do, And forever is losing a stocking or shoe.

Who, resisting or not, lets you do as you will. With bathing and feeding, the long day to fill,

Is that what you’re thinking? Is that what you see? Then open your eyes, nurse, you’re not looking at

me.

I’ll tell you who I am as I sit here so still, As I use at your bidding, as I eat at your will.

I’m a small child of ten with a father and mother, Brothers and sisters, who love one another.

A young girl of sixteen, with wings on her feet, Dreaming that soon now a lover she’ll meet.

A bride soon at twenty, my heart gives a leap, Remembering the vows that I promised to keep.

At twenty-five now, I have young of my own, Who need me to guide, and a secure happy home.

A woman of thirty, my young now grown fast, Bound to each other with ties that should last.

At forty my young sons have grown and are gone, But my man’s beside me to see I don’t mourn.

At fifty once more babies play around my knee, Again we know children, my loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me, my husband is dead, I look at the future, I shudder with dread.

For my young are all rearing young of their own, And I think of the years and the love that I’ve known.

I’m now an old woman and nature is cruel, ‘Tis just to make old age look like a fool.

The body, it crumbles, grace and vigor depart, There is now a stone where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass a young girl still dwells, And now and again my battered heart swells.

I remember the joys, I remember the pain, And I’m loving and living life over again.

I think of the years, all too few, gone too fast, And accept the stark fact that nothing can last.

So open your eyes, nurses, open and see, Not a crabby old woman LOOK CLOSER, SEE ME!
