Our visit to Treetops

My wife and I visited as part of our tour in Africa, Treetops in Kenya. On arrival at Nairobi, we were requested to get into parties of eight to go in the minibuses. At Treetops, we were met by the warden who had a rifle cocked and over his shoulder already. He advised us we must obey his instructions at all times. It is quite a walk from where the buses stop into Treetops itself. The two of us were walking along when the warden said ‘Shh’ and an elephant walked within a hundred yards of us right across our path. I nearly broke Rosalind’s arm when I grabbed it! In front of Treetops there is a small lake full of mud. When there is a party like ours, they mix salt into the mud and the elephants know this and come down and wallow in it. We watched this from the hotel lounge.

We then all went to dinner. In the middle of this the warden asked us to quietly go up on the flat roof and we saw the lioness go off hunting. We stayed up there and in a while it came back with, I think what was a gazelle in its mouth. We couldn’t see exactly as it was getting dark by this time. Then all the other animals came down to drink. There was a battle of wills between one of the lions and an elephant. This was quite fascinating and went on for some time until the elephant backed down!During the night the noises were fantastic and you wondered what was moving about. The next day the baboons all came down to breakfast with us. The bird life was wonderful. I’m no ornithologist but the colours and different shapes and sizes were amazing. The little ones pinched the food off your plate if you let them! Next day we went on to see the Masai Mara Reservation.

West Hallam enjoy a Jubilee Afternoon Tea

West Hallam Residents & Staff enjoyed their Jubilee celebrations. We had Kevin & Marie for entertainment, everyone loved them. They dressed up & sang, the whole show was fantastic and very enjoyable. On the Tuesday, we had a cream tea & a

bottle tombola, residents thoroughly enjoyed our delicious cakes made by Sally and Mel and we had a cup of tea to toast the Queen. The bottle tombola raised a brilliant £50 for the residents fund. Thank you to everyone who came to celebrate the Jubilee with us!

Valley Lodge celebrate the Jubilee!Valley Lodge’s Jubilee party went down very well with the residents and their relatives. Residents have been busy for the past few weeks mak-ing crowns, table centrepieces, paperchains and flags especially for the occasion. Valley Lodge was definitely looking the part for the Jubilee with all their decorations. To celebrate, there was a royal

treasure hunt for all in the afternoon followed by a sing song. Once everyone had enjoyed their tea, Kevin & Marie entertained everyone with their Jubilee special show. Everyone had a lovely day and felt that they couldnt have celebrated the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee any better!

King William’s Jubilee Garden Party!

King William’s Jubilee Garden Party was a success raising £200 for the resident’s fund. We started off outside but unfortunately the weather was against us so we had to bring everything in. It still

managed to be a lovely day, everyone had a fantastic time celebrating the Queen’s jubilee together. We also had entertaiment from Sam Kenney to get everybody in the spirit. Thank you to everyone who came and supported us.

ASHMERE INSIDE GOSSIP | ISSUE 23 | JULY 2012

King William would like to introduce two of their newest residents to the home, Ginger and Pip. They’re 2 very beautiful chickens who have taken up residence in the King William garden. They’ve got their own very special pen and they also enjoy a run around the garden as well! All of the residents have commented on how much they enjoy having the new additions to the home. Many of the residents had chickens when they were younger and its brought back some lovely memories for them. They all watch the chickens out the window and when its nice weather, they love to go outside

and help feed them. The 2 free range eggs we get each morning are an extra bonus in the home. Everyone gets excited to see whether the chickens have laid any eggs. Residents have been taking it in turns to enjoy having a King William free range egg for breakfast. The eggs have also been used in cakes and we’ve even been using them in quiches!

If you fancy meeting Ginger, Pip and all our King William residents, feel free to pop in at anytime. All visitors are welcome!

Smalley Hall’s Trip to the Zoo

Residents & Staff at Smalley Hall braved the cold and wet weather to visit Twycross Zoo for a day out. They saw lots of different types of monkeys as well as giraffes, leopards and meerkats. They enjoyed lunch in the cafe and had a look at the zoo’s cafe.

Everyone had a lovely time and thoroughly enjoyed it despite the miserable weather. Everyone was shattered and needed a nap after a very long day out.
