Letter To The Editor

Dear Andr’e:I congratulate you on your first year anniversary! Your testimony in the Aprilissue is really inspiring to people. I was watching Joel Osteen the other night, and he was preaching on receiving God’s best when you are where Godwants you to be... You have definitely been doing that, and I read your issueafter seeing Osteen on tv, so it’s a good reinforcement that we need to be intune with our conscience instead of worrying about what the world is doingand what people say about us like you were talking about.

Cheers, Roy A. Barnes

You go Mr. Alcarter. Congratulations.. You still look good!!

PUBLISHER’S NOTESSynergy is the essence of principle-centered leadership. Itis the essence of principle-centered parenting. It catalyzes, unifies, and unleashes the greatest power within people. What is synergy? Simply defined, it means that the whole isgreater than the sum of its parts.

The essence of synergy is to value differences-to respectthem, to build on strength, to compensate for weakness.Synergy is almost as if a group collectively agrees to sub-ordinate old script and to write a new one.

Value the difference in the essence of synergy-the mental, the emotional, the psychological difference between people. And the key to valuing those differences is to realize that allpeople see the world, not as it is, but as they are.

The person who is truly effective has the humility and rev-erence to recognize his own perpetual limitations and toappreciate the rich resources available through interactionwith the hearts and minds of other human beings.

Synergy works it’s a correct principle. It is the crowningachievement of all previous habits. It is effectiveness in aninterdependent reality-it is teamwork, team building, thedevelopment of unity and creativity with other human be-ings.

Synergy is collectively working together but at the sametime each party maintains their own identity. There shouldbe more positive synergy in the body of Christ. It doesn’tmatter what assignment God gives each of us we are allplaced in an interdependent position. If you are a gospelannouncer brokering your time you are looking for spon-sors and advertisiers to help pay for your time. If you are agospel artists you are interdependent on the gospel an-nouncers to play your music. We live in a world ofSNERGY, God has given each of us a dream.

It is up to us to put the correct pieces of the puzzle togetherthat will make our dream and vision a reality. Bottomlinewe live in an interdependent world, in order to move to thenext level we have to position ourselves to maximize onour positive synergy. God Bless!

I love what I do and I do what I love. Iattended a lecture in April. The Speakerwas Bishop E. Benard Jordan who is theauthor of The Laws Of Thinking: 20Secrets To Using The Divine Power ofYour Mind To Manifest Prosperity. Whois also featured in this month issue onpage 9. During the lecture he said some-thing that got into my spirit. He said,“readers are leaders.”

When I started the journey on the roadto my destiny. I had no ideal how manytimes I would run out of gas or how manymountains I would have to cross. I hadno ideal how many challenges I wouldhave to deal with. The one thing I knewin my heart was God would never leaveme nor forsake me. Kirk Franklin had asong out a few years ago featuring BishopT.D. Jakes. He was speaking to theBishop and made mention of the TimeMagazine that featured the Bishop.Bishop Jakes response was. “Nobodyknows the struggles I went though to getto where I am today.”

I also remember the song Stand byDonnie McClirkin. Which was a pow-erful song that we should never give upno matter how tough it gets. Everythingthat we go through is a part of the pro-cess, its like the lump of coal that be-comes a diamond. And we are all dia-monds in the making as long as we nevergive up. Its all about the purpose, giftsand talents that God has planned for ourlives. Yes, we all fall short but we haveto keep getting up in order to be ap-proved for the little set backs. God hasa much bigger plan but if you are unableto handle the many disappointments thenits best to stay on your 9-5. Dream andwishing for the day you will become setfree to be your own boss. No one said itwould be easy. I would like the subscrib-ers who took the time to congratulateme for completing my first year as an

online publication. In every issue I liketo share a part of my struggle and whatit takes to keep pressing towards themark.

Since starting my own publication it takeshours of dedication to collect informa-tion as well as the layout... But through itall I have been able to Bounce Back.Oh yes, there have been times when Ijust wanted to throw in the towel be-cause I had been pinned on the ropesgetting the beating of my life. More thanonce I have been dropped to the can-vas. That’s when I hear the voice of Godsaying, “Get up you bum there one moreround.” I get back up to finish the lastround and out of no where I get a sergeof energy to win the fight.

Being in business for yourself takes a lotof courage and yes it also requires a lotof reading. That reminds me knowledgeis power! That’s one thing no one cantake from you and trust me there ispower in knowledge. There is also powerin numbers. The gay and lesbians alwaysget what they want because they under-stand the power they have. The secularworld also understand the process ofgiving a tenth of what they earn. Throughgrants that are set up to help start upbusinesses.

I am not really concerned with gettinggrants and the like because I believethere are enough people who don’t mindsowing a $15.00 seed to see a businessgrow. It’s a real challenge when every-one knows that advertisement and pro-motions is key. Many people havestarted there business with determinationa business card and no plan of action. They were actually making their planbased on situations and circumstances.I am here to tell you that it takes morethan a few flyer when ever you are hav-ing an event. It will take more than a fewcommercials on the radio when you havean event. It’s going to take more thanword of mouth to make it happen. Itsgoing to take a plan.

Since converting Gospel Synergy to anonline publication, I have been able togenerate subscribers from around theworld. Our plan is to produce the maga-zine in at least 4 languages by the end ofthe year. By converting to an online pub-lication I no longer have to sale as hardas I did with a print publication. Trustme it is less stressful.

The reason I am able to bounce back isbecause I am not afraid to change withthe times. I am no longer concerned withthe people who don’t have Internet. Iam no longer concerned with the peoplewho are online and get caught up inbuilding their private networks wherepeople are bashing each other. I am look-ing for the people who understand thepower of the Internet.

Now that Gospel Synergy has completedtheir first year online. We now average2,500 visitors per day We are seeinggrowth in our subscribers from aroundthe world. We adjusted our rates. Webelieve that our second year is going tobe even greater than the first year. Wealso offer an affiliate program to everysubscriber who would like to generatean extra income by sharing our publica-tion with family and friends.

Come, be a part of the Synergy Familywhere we share the God News, God’sWord and Gospel Music. In closing Iwould like to say thank you all for yourcontinued support.

Challenge:

No Complaining For 7 Days

“Now when the people complained, itdispleased the LORD; for the LORDheard it...” (Numbers 11:1)

Complaining is draining. High cost of gas.Incompetent colleagues. Pushy clients.Lazy teenagers. Uninspired spouses.Ungrateful employees. Inflexible airlines. The objects of our disaffection may vary, but complaining about life is always inseason — even though it’s usually a futileexercise. People spend such vast amountsof time complaining that I have come upwith name for it, “BMW mode” which isshort for “belly-aching, moaning, andwhining.” I use to think people complainedbecause they had a lot of problems. But Ihave come to realize that they haveproblems because they complain. Butthere is hope.Robert Kegan, a professorat Harvard’s Graduate School ofEducation, has spent 15 years studyingwhy people complain and have found thatcomplaints can actually be the seeds forindividual change. Kegan suggests turningthe “language of complaint” into the“language of commitment”. He writes thatbehind every complaint is an idea or avalue that a person is committed to.Otherwise, why be upset? For example,a person who complains that his potentialclient is a jerk might be committed to theidea of having a relationship with that clientthat is based on respect and trust. Andonce that person stops thinking ofthemselves as a complainer and startthinking of themselves as someone who

is committed to something, that sets thestage for them to solve their problem. Thathappens not by dismissing the complaintbut by finding the commitment behind it.Iused to complain about everything. Myunderpaying job. My seat at church. Thehouse I lived in. The lack of money. WhatI didn’t know that each time I complainedto God about something, I expressed myunwillingness to be thankful for what Godwas trying to do in my life. And,complaining always pushed me furtheraway from my goals. Here’s what Ilearned: If something can be changed, work to change it. If it cannot, why worry,be upset, and complain? So for the nextseven days, let’s change our language ofcomplaining into a language ofcommitment. Get out of BMW mode bymonitoring your words. If a complain isabout to come out of your month such as“I dislike my situation”, change to “I thankGod for His favor to promote me quickly”.After seven days, not only will yourattitude about life change, but it will changethe people around you.

Why seven days? Seven is God’s numberfor maturity. After seven days, your faithwill become more mature and you will seeGod do greater things on your behalf.Send us an e-mail...I look forward tohearing great things from you! Serving theKing of Kings, Dr. Robert Watkins.

“The Test of the Blest”

I’m reading a new book called “Madeto Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive andOthers Die” by Chip and Dan Heath.

One reason some ideas stick is that theyare simple and clear, easy to get a holdof.

One example they gave was RonaldReagan’s presidential campaign againstJimmy Carter. Reagan simply asked thevoters, “Are you better off now than youwere four years ago?”

He didn’t need a long speech with boringstatistics about the economy. He simplytold each voter to ask themselves, “AmI better off now than I was four yearsago?”

I’m not getting into politics, or the topicof the book. But I do want you to thinkabout that question, “Are you better offnow than you were four years ago?”

If so, then you are blessed.

And with that blessing comes a testing.

Let’s go back to the children of Israelafter God delivered them out of Egypt. They ended up in a desert, and whinedthat they were going to starve to death.

In Exodus 16:4 the Lord told Moses, “Iwill rain down bread from heaven…”

Bread from heaven? Now that’s what Icall a blessing!

If you are better off now than you werefour years ago, then, in a way, God hasrained down bread from heaven on yourlife.

“Now Doug, I worked hard for that. Itwasn’t exactly as easy as bread falling

from heaven.”

God gave the children of Israel a warningthat I think applies to us today.

“You may say to yourself, ‘My powerand the strength of my hands haveproduced this wealth for me.’ Butremember the Lord your God, for it isHe who gives you the ability to producewealth…”*

Yes, you probably worked hard. Butremember, you couldn’t do a single thingif it weren’t for God’s blessing on yourlife.

Now back to the people in the desert.God said He would rain down bread forthem. But there was more to it thanmeets the eye. With the blessing came atesting.

The Lord went on to say, “In this way Iwill test them and see whether they willfollow My instructions.”

Today is April 16th. It’s tax time, a timeof year when we are keenly aware ofhow much money we made. So let meask you, did you make more money thanyou did four years ago? If so, you areblessed, and I think God would say toyou the same thing He said about thosechildren of Israel: “In this way I will testthem and see whether they will followMy instructions.”

We don’t end up blessed by accident.James 1:17 says that every good andperfect gift comes down from our Fatherabove. He has literally rained Hisblessings down on us.

If you are any kind of Christian at all youhave to admit, it’s all from Him. Sure,we do our part, but we couldn’t evendo that without Him.

So the question is, what does He wantus to do with it? If He is testing us to seeif we will follow His instructions, thenwhat are His instructions?

This is where you have to go to the Lordyourself and ask.

I can give you general Biblical principles.“Do good.” “Be generous on everyoccasion.” “Willing to share.”“Trustworthy.”

The Bible tells of one blessed young manwho went straight to Jesus forinstructions. Jesus told him to dosomething radical, “Sell yourpossessions…give to the poor…thencome, follow Me.”

This young man was myopic. He didn’tsee that God had given him all he had, leading up to this one big test, this forkin the road. Would he follow God’sinstructions?

No. He received personal, directguidance from the Lord, then didn’t doit.

So I ask again, are you better off thanyou were four years ago? If so, then youare blessed, and with that blessing comesa testing: Will you follow God’sinstructions?

And if you are not sure what they are, then it’s time to seek the face of Godand find out. This is one test you want topass: The Test of the Blest.

Christians have a right to divineprotection, but without a workingknowledge of God’s salvation, itwon’t be a reality. By trusting God,putting His Word in your heart andcontinually confessing it in faith, you release angelic protection overyour life and family. There is no safeplace outside of God. When youneglect to meditate on andconfess the salvation of God,which includes protection, you arein a dangerous position (Hebrews2:1-3). There is protection in God.When you operate according to theworld system, even if you are aChristian, you are a target for theenemy. Satan plots and schemesto try and trap Believers.Protection is part of God’ssalvation package. The new birthis only a part of the salvationpackage. Angels play a vital rolein enforcing your salvation.Trust God to protect you (Psalm20:7). Some people put their trustin natural weapons, but Believersuse the name of Jesus as theirstrength and protection. God won’tallow any harm to come your waywhen you trust Him. You areguarded by God’s power throughyour faith in Him (1 Peter 1:5).Faith connects you to divineprotection. Make a quality decisionnot to walk in fear. God is the lifterof your head (Psalm 3:1-8). Youdon’t have to walk in fear when youknow God is on your side. Thereis a place in Christ Jesus whereyou can abide in the secret placeof God’s provision and protection. This place is for those who areobedient to Him. When youpermanently abide in God, you willstay protected (Psalm 91). Satan

has no access to the secret placeof God’s protection. You lay holdof your protection by speaking theWord of God. Your faith should bein God’s ability to protect you, notyour ability to protect yourself. When you develop an intimaterelationship with the Lord, you stayin the secret place.

The Believer has a role to play inmaintaining his or her salvation. The Christian must trust in the God.The Christian must put the Wordin his or her heart by speaking it.The Christian must believe God.When you abide in God, you havevital union with Him (John 15:7).Allow the Word to take root in yourheart. God will cover you with theshadow of His hand when youspeak His Word (Isaiah 51:16).You are the work of God, andtherefore you have a right to Hisprotection (Psalm 145:9). Yourwords have power. By using yourwords skillfully, you tap in to God’sprotection (Daniel 10:12).

Political Synergy+ - = ?

Many of you may have noticed that page3 never changes and you are probablyasking yourself, why? To me it is neces-sary to keep the definition of synergy inyour minds. Its a very powerful wordand when it gets into your spirit you willunderstand why I never change the page.

Many of us have dreams and vision ofstarting a business. We will so in grossedabout our business that we will put onour blinders. Thinking to a degree thatwe don’t need any one’s help. So westep out and in some case leap out onfaith. Starting with our business cards anda few flyers. We start our journey.

For a while things are going good youare getting some response but not whatyou were expecting. There are and willbe many challenges to over come. Firstand foremost it takes a budget. It takestime to set back and have a plan that isgoing to work. In the beginning you areso excited so you are running here , thereand everywhere to get the ball rolling.

A lot of the running the wear and tearthat you put on your body, your familyand your automobile begins to take itstoll. So, you begin to look at other av-enues to work your business. You beginto realize that its going to take more thanbusiness cards and flyers to get to thenext level. Now its time to go back toreview your business plan to make sureyou are still working your plan.

I’m sure that you have learned a fewvaluable lessons along the way. One ofmy problems was over committing be-fore getting compensated for my time andservice. I also knew integrity played amajor role in being in business. So youhave to honor your word even when ithurts.

Having a budget is important becauseadvertisement and marketing is a keyfactor to getting to the next level. Its al-ways good to build relationships with likeminded people who are creative to be apart of your team. But beware of the nayslayers and negative people who willgravitate to you. I had to really pray andask God for the spirit of discernment.

God created each of us as equals andHe knew what we would do when wewere not even conceived. That why Heplaced each of us in a position to be ablessing to each other. What ever wechoose to do in life we have to study tobe approved. Let me give you a coupleof examples... You are a keyboard playerwho would like to start a group but youcan’t start a band with out other instru-ments. So you have to get other musi-cians to join together. Now that yourgroup is together you need a manager, booking agent, publicist and the list goeson.

Well guess what God has given those giftsand talents to other individuals to helpyou grow. That’s the power of Synergy.Lets say that your desire is to become apreacher so you answer the call on yourlife. But, here again you can’t make ithappen without making yourself visibleand without members. You have to havedeacons, musicians, choir, ushers and thelist goes own. That’s the power of Syn-ergy. Even Moses had to delegate posi-tion to others when he lead the Childrenof Israel to freedom.

There is a price that we all have to payas we step out on faith to take control ofour destiny. We cannot hold our dreamsand visions to close because they will notgrow. The power of synergy is being ableto recognize our strengths and weaknessand add whatever is missing to grow.

The power of Synergy is all around us!Do you remember the old rhyme we use

to say as a child the toe bone is con-nected to the foot boon and the foot boneis connected to the ankle bone and soon. Well, guess what that was the be-ginning of Synergy. That’s the way Godplanned it.

What I am sharing is nothing new Syn-ergy is all around us from the automo-bile to the space shuttle, from the TV tothe computer. It was and will always beone mans dream and vision that will al-low us to grow. No man is an island, noman can stand alone. It takes the syn-ergy of working together. All we have todo is look around us as we can see thesynergy in the seasons. We can see thesynergy in developing a housing com-plex. Synergy is in every business andeveryone is being compensated for theirservice from the janitor to the presidentof the USA.

We are all looking for the next page andthe next chapter in our life as we con-tinue our journey to our pursuit of hap-piness. The question is how do we getthere if we are not willing to work to-gether. How do we get there when wethink that no one can do it the way I doit... It takes the power of Synergy andeveryone staying in their rightful positionto grow. It will also take reading to havea better understand of how to sell your-self product and service to reach themasses.

If you are in business for yourself don’tbe afraid to step out of your comfortzone. Take advantage of every oppor-tunity that comes your way but pleaseuse wisdom in the choices you make.Take the time to do your researh andplease read every book or article that isgoing to be a blessing to you. We are ina transitional period and times are chang-ing. I shouldn’t have to say this but as areminder to myself and everyone read-ing this article we should always to re-member to keep God First!

Black Church Music Facing Challenges

The traditional gospel choir in thechurch, particularly the black church, may be facing a shortage ofaccomplished music ministers, according to a recent report.

Black churches throughout the countryare finding it harder to find skilledmusicians to lead music – an integralpart of the worship experience –reported Religion & EthicsNewsweekly.

“It’s a difficult thing to try to findsomeone trained. I talked to one of myfriends who told me it took him fiveyears to find a musician finally that wouldbe his minister of music,” Dr. GarySimpson, pastor of Concord BaptistChurch of Christ in Brooklyn, N.Y., toldthe TV newsmagazine.

Simpson has also been unable to find anew music minister.

The main competition churches are upagainst is the mainstream music industry.

“The big money is in producing. The bigmoney is in rap,” said Leo Davis, Jr.,minister of music at MississippiBoulevard Christian Church, accordingto Religion & Ethics Newsweekly.“They’re looking at rappers with themillion-dollar houses with gold ceilings, and why do I want to work in a churchand make $30,000?”

And while skilled musicians may beturning to the multi-billion dollar lifestyleof rap and hip hop, the mainstreamindustry is also taking many gospelsingers out of the church.

“Gospel music is coming to themainstream. Singers are coming out ofthe church and introducing the gospelstyle to a mainstream audience,” saidgospel diva Yolanda Adams (aboveleft), according to Real Black Radio.

Still, others have chosen to take rap tothe pulpit with such groups as DemUnknown WarriorZ infusing wordsabout Jesus with a popular beat youthsrecognize.

While some pastors are embracing hip-hop music to draw crowds and relateto younger believers, Dr. GlenMcMillan, interim music director ofConcord Baptist Church of Christ, askswhere the memorable sounds of musicsuch as hymns are.

Hymns like “Come Thou Fount ofEvery Blessing” and “Amazing Grace”live on, McMillan told the TVnewsmagazine, while many won’tremember a hip hop line, he believes.

Not only are accomplished musicministers becoming harder to find, butsoon, even traditional gospel music inthe church may become a rare sound.

McMillan wants younger generations toembrace the traditional songs and passit down, but says that possibly 20 yearsfrom now, “hymnal music is going to beobsolete.”

From The Editor... GS Magazine

This is the second article that I havepublished in Gospel Synergy Magazine.I believe that many musicians are tired

of seeing the pastor’s getting rich andsome are living the life styles of the rap-pers with their lear jets, fine homes witha Benz, Lexus and in some cases aRolls.

Many also feel that their services is notappreciated. From where I sit I see newgospel music coming out everyday, be-ing that I am a Program Director for anonline Internet Gospel Station an theowner of the only online gospel musicdistribution site.

The problem that I see is the same prob-lem that Thomas Dorsey had back inthe day when the church disregardedthe change in gospel music. But herewe are sixty years later and PreciousLord is still as popular today as it waswhen Mr. Dorsey introduced it.

I believe that the gospel artist have tobecome more aggressive when it comesto advertising and marketing their prod-uct and service. Bottom line it takesmoney to make money. I recieve newgospel music daily but most artist arelooking for favor because they don’thave a budget to make it happen. Mostget stuck in a rut looking for a place toperform becasue they lack the finances.I would like to keep it real Christiansare cheap when it comes to supportingthe gospel music industry.

There are so many factors to take intoconsideration when it comes to this veryimportant and sensitive issue. I believethat we are in a transitional period andas we come out we will see the resultsof our labor. I believe that the musiciansneed to be respected for their service. Its hard on the families of musicianswhen it comes time to meet their obli-gations and be a servant for the Lordwith their gifts and talents.

Gospel Synergy has teamed up with atalented freelance writer, Steve Smith, tobring you a brief introduction to the historyof Black Gospel Music in the UK. Wehope this will grow into a valuableresource and welcome your contributionsand memories.

The British Story: A glimpse at BritishBlack Gospel music History.

The American Gospel music market isworth an estimated 700 million dollars andthe genre is not only another category, butis the beginning of all musical formats suchas rock ‘n’ roll, soul and blues.

The US has carefully documented theirgospel history which can be traced backto 400 years and is an amalgamation ofEuropean hymns and African culture bornout of slavery. The roll call list of USlegends reads like a phone book but mustalways include Thomas Dorsey, MahaliaJackson, James Cleveland, The Hawkinsand Andrae Crouch to name but a few.The British have their own legends too.

British Blacks from the Caribbean beganto settle in a war-torn Britain after theSecond World War and first arrived in1948 in small numbers on the ship SSWindrush which is the historic and iconicequivalent of the Americans Mayflower. As their numbers grew so did theirchurches leading to the inevitable growthand development of gospel music.

At first, Pioneers of the genre wereamongst the new settlers from theCaribbean and included a 1960’sTrinidadian family group called the ‘SingingStewarts’. The Stewarts toured, recorded, appeared on TV and Radio andwere one of the first to attract the attentionof the English white population.

This move towards performing for themasses was controversial as the early

churches preferred to keep gospel withinits walls. As a result many of the earlyBritish gospel legends remain folklore orhave been completely forgotten as theywere never recorded. Also, blackchurches at the time were very reluctantto encourage interdenominationalactivities and preferred to build their ownkingdoms.

As time proceeded on, the first generationof British kids began to listen to and studythe American Gospel influences and soonbegan to form a unique sound of their own.In the 1970’s groups such as theHarmonisers, The Doyley Brothers,Heavenly Hopes and a Brit-Funk gospeloutfit called Kainos began to emerge outof the giant shadows of American Gospel.

A 1980’s generation took the process onestep further and began to write andproduce a unique home-grown soundbacked up by record company interest.Soon, British Gospel promoters, financersand black newspapers began to create theinfrastructure within which these groupscould perform and grow into a moreprofessional and business-like outfit.

In the early 1980’s the English publicexperienced an enormous explosion andoutpouring of black British Gospelushering in a new era. A major figure andambassador of UK gospel is Basil Meadewho dared to form and nurture aninterdenominational choir (LCGC) beforesuccessfully presenting it to the publicdomain. Over 25 years later and aftermany awards and accolades Basil and hischoir remain one of the leading gospelgroups in Britain.

The main performers of the time were theLondon Community Gospel Choir(LCGC), The Majestic Singers, TheMerrybells, Inspirational choir, AngelicVoice Choir and COGIC masschoir.Instrumental groups also began totake shape such as Paradise and Clarity. The era also gave birth to solo artists such

as Lavine Hudson,Shirley Fenty and PaulJohnson.

A number of groups began to producerecords and forge links which wouldexpose them to the mass media leading insome cases to exploitation of a naiveindustry.

Today, British Gospel as moved to a newlevel of maturity and is gaining recognitionworld-wide. Raymond and Co. are oneof the leaders in this arena but are by nomeans the only group.

This article is short and readers mustappreciate that it is a taste and smallnarrow peep hole into the 60 year historyof British Black Gospel music.

Snapshots from Black British GospelHistory:

The album,’Worlds Midnight’.

The title of this classic 1982 British Gospelalbum says it all and was the secondrelease on the now defunked Pilgrimrecord label by the Black BritishInstrumental group Paradise.

The band were caught up and inspired bya wave of Brit-funk that just happened tobe sweeping the UK at the time, generatedby American Giants such as Earth Windand Fire and the Commodores.

Their lyrics were street-wise,evangelical and pure Brit. This wasbacked up by infectious funk/soulrhythms produced by talented churchmusicians and singers from the Londonarea.

This style of music caused a hugeproblem amongst the conservativechurch leaders but on the other handappealed to all races of youngsters inboth the secular and gospel arena. Ifyou have a copy of this old album (orcassette) then hang on to it. It is highlysought after in Japan and Franceamongst enthusiastic collectors.

The Majestic Singers

The Majestic singers were aBirmingham based choir founded andset up by the Late Justin Lewis in themid-70’s.The choir came out of thePentecostal New Testament Church ofGod. This group pre-dated the LondonCommunity Gospel Choir by about 10years, and was in fact one of the maininfluences.

The X-Factor 1960’s style.

Recently, a number of gospel artists haveappeared on the TV talent show X-factor and faced up to the harshJudgement of Simon Cowell. This is nota new concept, as British gospel outfitssuch as the Doyley Brothers and theHeavenly Hopes appeared beforemillions of viewers on a 1960’s and 70’sTV talent show called ‘OpportunityKnocks’.

Bazil Meade, Lawrence Johnsonand Delroy Powell. These three menare arguably the most important figuresin the history of British gospel music. What groundbreaking choir did theyform in 1982? If you know the answer, then e-mail me.If you have any question you would liketo ask please email us at...

In 1982 a dream and avision came alive. Revd.Bazil Meade, with thehelp of LawrenceJohnson, Delroy Powelland John Francis, made

a mark in history pioneering the firstconcert gospel choir in Britain – theLondon Community Gospel Choir(LCGC)Trying to fit LCGC into aneat slot is virtually impossible. They are adaptable, flexible and createdynamic melodies with rich harmonieswhether they are performing as an octetor a 30-strong choir. LCGC is knownfor their funky gospel flair, swing-beat,R’n’B, traditional and soulfularrangements, with invigoratingchoreography and vocal gymnastics.LCGC are outstanding to watch!Itsmembers perform just about anywhere:private corporate functions, after-showparties, conferences, schools, cabaretfunctions, clubs, weddings, christenings, funerals, prisons, churches, open-airfestivals, theatres and concerthalls.Controversial, Professional,Energetic, Inspiring and Spirit-filled! Whatever adjective you chooseto describe the sound and vision of theLondon Community Gospel Choir,‘there ain’t no stopping them now’.They will continue to go where angelsfear to tread.

Let’s Get Quiet: The Smooth JazzExperience Released March 27th

The creator of ‘Gospel Jazz,’ BenTankard expanded the genre of Gospelmusic with his late 80s debut “All KeyedUp.” He has gone on to become one ofthe top-selling instrumentalists in Gospelmusic and, having performed withYolanda Adams, Take 6, AlbertinaWalker and many others, he is also oneof Gospel’s most sought after musicians.

Let’s Get Quiet: The Smooth JazzExperience continues to advance themicro-genre of instrumental Gospel, withtracks that elevate the spirit and soothethe soul. “With this album, I really wantedto assist listeners into coming into a placeof peace rather than totally being involvedin a rat race,” says Tankard. “That’s whyI named it ‘Let’s Get Quiet’ to encouragepeople to quiet down; take some timeto dream, take some time to relax andtake some time to recharge yourbattery.”

In addition to reflective smooth jazztunes like “Week- End Forecast,” “LakeCabin” and “Night Flight,” Let’s GetQuiet features smooth interpretations ofGospel tunes “Everything’s Gonna BeAlright” and the classic hymn “I Cometo the Garden Alone.”

“One of my Al Green favorites is‘Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,’” saysTankard. I chose that song because I thinkit goes with the message ofencouragement. When you get quiet, whenyou get in the presence of God, you findthe promises of God in the Bible and youget the same answer every time

Let’sbegin to believe and act on what we havebeen praying in this prayer since we werejust babes. Let’s Get Quiet, in thepresence of God, so He can transfer thespirit of heaven to our hearts.”

Many folks believe that it is impossible tolegitimately combine the diverse musicaluniverses of gospel, soul and rap, yet forthe talented Kevin L it’s just another dayin the studio. “For me, there are no musicalborders,” boasts the revolutionary artistwhose debut album, Souled Out, master-mixes the various elements of music tocreate a sound that is completely his own.

While other artists have only attemptedto merge spirituality with the streets, KevinL has succeeded in bringing somethingnew to the scene. The goal of this Ohionative is to project music as a celebrationof life. “With my songs, I’m celebratingmy defeat of despair.” What really setsSouled Out apart is the seamless way thatKevin L takes the listener on a realistic, yet uplifting journey through the pain, loss, and despair of life. “As an African-American artist I can clearly see that thereis a need for honesty in Black music. Weall have a story…Life is tough foreveryone. What we need to do now isfilter a positive message to the masses.”Opening with his sizzling hit “In the City,”the track that lays the foundation for thismusical journey, Kevin L sweeps thelistener away with a multitude ofinstruments that play second string to hishypnotic voice.

Delivering a message of hope to the thirstyears of the urban jungle, Kevin L’sencouraging words come from thesincerest of places. The product of a longline of musicians and singers, and thestepson of the legendary Ray Charles,

Kevin L seems fated to conquer the musicindustry. “My entire family has been intomusic,” reflecting on the life of his church-going mother, who was a faithful memberof her church choir and ensured that Kevinwas well-versed in Christian faith.

The homegrown sounds of the OhioPlayers and Stevie Wonder becameKevin L’s salvation while nurturing himthrough the knee injury that ended apromising post-college NFL career.Performing and touring with his sister,Sheila Raye Charles, for two yearsfollowing college proved to be Kevin L’sofficial launch into the music world. It wasduring this time that he gained invaluablestage experience in preparation for his truecalling.

Conscious of where he has been and howfar he still has to travel, Kevin L haslaunched a multi-faceted campaign to relayhis message of peace & brotherly love asa means for advancement. This talentedvisionary has coupled his musical effortswith the creation of his clothing line,STRANGER GEAR, and the initiation of THE

H13 YOUTH PROJECT, which aims tosupport and heal communities by goinginto schools and neighborhoodsnationwide to explain the benefits of havinga productive and positive community thatwould open more doors for the youth.

“When I look over my life, I see seasonsof success as well as struggle,” Kevin L.says. “God has allowed it all as a way toprepare me for my mission. It’s all beendone to draw me closer to Him; Bringingme closer to where He wants me to be.Through pain, you can truly learn what itmeans to rely on God. Now, if throughfaith, you let God take the reigns, He willlead you to places beyond your wildestimagination and make miracles happen.”Indeed, Kevin L.’s astonishing first work,Souled Out, is just one of those places.

Kevin L made the rounds in Chicagostopping by radio and TV stations todebute his new release.
