“I see things like they’ve never been seen before. Art is an accurate statement of the time in which it is made.”

—Robert Mapplethorpe

When Dennis Barrie and his colleagues at the Cincinnati Contemporary Arts Center opened Mapplethorpe’s The Perfect Moment in 1990, they had no idea of the storm that would follow. The exhibition had been cancelled in Washington D.C.’s Corcoran Gallery after Senator Jesse Helms exclaimed publicly that Mapplethorpe’s images were pornographic and should not have received funding from the NEA. Barrie soon found himself in court defending both the images and freedom of speech.

More than a quarter of a century later, these same works were celebrated in Los Angeles in a joint exhibition between LACMA and the J. Paul Getty Museum, illustrating a shift in the way society experienced the images. This season, cover artist Bryce Dessner and acclaimed director Kaneza Schaal offer a fresh examination of these pictures through the eyes of Mapplethorpe’s subjects in Triptych (Eyes of One on Another). Our friends at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)—where the show just finished a successful run—share how this and other “culture war”

moments have shaped the current artistic landscape.

2019 marks a year of significant anniversaries in the Stanford community. Our resident string quartet—the St Lawrence—celebrates 30 years of making music together. And 150 years ago, Leland Stanford participated in a golden spike ceremony that connected our nation east to west by rail. Conductor Jindong Cai returns to Stanford with a major new symphonic work that pays tribute to the Chinese laborers who orchestrated this monumental achievement.

Finally, this issue explores the film and television scores of Max Richter and introduces Stanford Live audiences to Hanggai—a Mongolian rock band with literally billions of fans.

We look forward to sharing another exciting season with you!

F E A T U R E T T E

2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the completion of the first Transcontinental Railroad across the United States. Between 1863 and 1869, tens of thousands of men labored under perilous, often deadly conditions to build the tracks that would join the Eastern and Western halves of the United States and forever transform our nation.

On May 10, 1869, Leland Stanford traveled to Promontory Summit, Utah, where he drove a golden spike into the ground and ceremonially linked the tracks of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific, thereby completing the line. All but invisible at the Golden Spike ceremony, and long missing from historic record, are the thousands

of Chinese workers who toiled to lay the line over the monumental Sierra Nevada mountains and across the burning deserts of Nevada and Utah. To give a voice to these Chinese migrants, Stanford professors Gordon H. Chang and Shelley Fisher Fishkin established the important Chinese Railroad Workers in North America

Men of Iron and the Golden Spike:A symphonic oratorio dedicated to

“The combination of orchestra and choruses from the U.S. and China reflects the magnitude of the undertaking, and also

creates a piece for many participants, just like the building of the railroad.”

Project at Stanford University in 2012, coordinating research and publishing new findings both online and in print.

Now, to further amplify the long-silent voices of the Railroad Chinese, the Stanford Center for East Asian Studies and the US-China Music Institute at the Bard College Conservatory of Music have collaborated with the Chinese Railroad Workers’ Project to commission a musical work, Men of Iron and the Golden Spike. This project was conceived by Professor Chang and I back in 2013 following many discussions about how best to mark this important anniversary. We finally decided to bring the story to the stage with a large-scale symphonic

oratorio. The combination of orchestra and choruses from the U.S. and China reflects the magnitude of the undertaking, and also creates a piece for many participants, just like the building of the railroad.

As we sought to commission the piece, we learned that Yale-based writer Su Wei had penned an opera libretto on this very subject some 20 years ago. He had also written the lyrics for another oft-performed oratorio called Ask the Sky and the Earth, which commemorates the “sent-down youth” movement in China’s Cultural Revolution that saw millions of urban youth sent to the countryside to learn from the farmers. We knew that Su Wei

was the perfect person to write the lyrics to Men of Iron and the Golden Spike and we were fortunate that he agreed to do so.

An oratorio of this scale naturally requires exceptional music, so we were thrilled when Pulitzer-prize winning composer Zhou Long agreed to accept our commission. Zhou does extensive research to inform his music, and last year he came out to Stanford and drove with me to the Sierra Mountains and the California Railroad Museum in Sacramento so he could see firsthand where the Railroad Chinese lived and worked.

The Cinematic Works of Max RichterMax Richter’s sparkling scores are colorful, bittersweet, and have provided the emotional soundscape for dozens of TV and movie productions. Learn

more about his work before he takes the Bing stage with the American Contemporary Music Ensemble in October.

2008 Henry May Long—This vivid period piece film set in New York’s golden age is accompanied by Richter’s grave soundtrack with motifs centered around a moving piano melody. 2010

Sarah’s Key—For this French drama’s soundtrack that focuses on an investiga-tion of Jewish treatment by Germans in Paris, Richter composed arrangements that are sometimes more haunting and tense than somber.

2012Disconnect—This provocative film spins a story that grapples with the damages characters’ actions online bring to them. To go with the theme of technology, Richter makes a slight departure from his usual orchestral sound to a more electronic and modern sound.

2016Arrival—Though Richter was not the composer of the film’s score, composer Jóhann Jóhannsson placed his entrancing track, “On The Nature Of Daylight”, in the beginning and end of the film to set its tone. The track was also used in 2010 thriller “Shutter Island.”

2015–2019Chef’s Table—The opening credits sequence to this culinary documen-tary series is overlaid with explosive and quick violin notes marked by animated syncopations from “Winter 1”, Richter’s reimagining of Antonio Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons.”

2017The Crown—This historical drama television series aptly makes use of Richter’s “Spring 1,” a movement from his recomposed version of “The Four Seasons.” The fluttery exchange between two violins provides sets a light-hearted tone for the scene in which the piece was used.

2017–2019Taboo—To match the bloodshed and intensity of this television series, Richter produces a soundtrack that sometimes sounds like it was written for a horror film. Menacing roars from the double bass and haunting choir voices add to the extremely dark and rich texture of the score.

2016Black Mirror: “Nosedive”—Richter’s score for “Nosedive” in the award-winning science fiction Netflix series Black Mirror offers a lonely piano theme that is then met with ambient electronic tones to surround the world obsessed with social credit ratings. 2014–2017

The Leftovers—After the sudden disappearance of two percent of the global population, a small commu-nity in New York learn to cope with the tragedy in this television series. Richter again displays his talents in minimalistic piano and electronic sounds, but the main title theme explodes with powerful drums and a wailing violin solo.

Triptych (Eyes of One on Another), which was presented at the BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) Howard Gilman Opera House this past June and comes to Stanford Live on October 3, is a paean to photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, whose work was key in the culture wars of the 1980–90s. The Contemporary Art Center in

Cincinnati, and its Director Dennis Barrie, were acquitted of obscenity charges stemming from an exhibition of Mapplethorpe photographs. Bryce Dessner, guitarist for The National and composer of the score for Triptych, grew up in Cincinnati and recalls, “I was told by the authorities that I was not allowed to look at Mapplethorpe’s

photographs—that these tremendous works of art were not art at all, but pornography … Barrie was jailed and art was put on trial in municipal court. It was a huge moment for me.”

This case was one example of a late-20th-century conservative trend to censor artwork that might be offensive,

Tim MillerMiller was one of the “NEA 4”—four artists (also Karen Finley, John Fleck, and Holly Hughes) whose NEA grants were vetoed by the head of the NEA in 1990. Their work received scrutiny and criticism as being blasphemous and a waste of taxpayer money. After their cases went to court and their grants were restored, the NEA stopped funding individual artists.

Robert MapplethorpeIn 1989, Mapplethorpe’s exhibition The Perfect Moment was canceled by the Corcoran Museum (DC). When it traveled to Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center, the director Dennis Barrie was charged with obscenity, unsuccessfully. Besides being the subject matter of Triptych (Eyes of One on Another), Mapplethorpe photographed a number of BAM artists over the years.

Don’t miss Triptych (Eyes of One on Another) when it arrives at Stanford Live’s Memorial Auditorium on October 3, 2019.

Of all the improbable things that have happened to the Beijing-based Mongolian-traditional-meets-rock band Hanggai, their dominance, in 2015, of the second season of Sing My Song – a Voice-like television show whose first season, according to the Hollywood Reporter, was seen by 480 million people – might well be the most improbable.

It’s not strange that they won: Their music had by then been blowing minds for over a decade and brought them domestic and international rock-music renown, and it is miles beyond the usual televised-talent-

show fare. It’s strange that they would be there in the first place.

A rock band being on China Central Television, given rock’s barely-thirty-year history in China—a history and present reality, thanks to its politically-charged status in the Middle Kingdom, marred by controversy and more—is certainly improbable.

But yet their appearance on the big show, as improbable as it was, connects back to where it all began for yaogun—Chinese rock and roll. Twenty-nine years before Hanggai’s winning performance, Cui Jian, a gruff

young guitarist and singer stepped up to the mic and introduced yaogun to the masses—literal millions watching in rapt attention—with a song called “Nothing to My Name.”

Hanggai’s roots are in the music that slowly, then very quickly emerged over the intervening years. From the Dylan-esque Cui, rockers of the late 80s and into the 90s were predominantly influenced by hard rock and heavy metal. By the mid-90s, yaogun

diversified. The slow opening of China to overseas students and tourists and the ability for Chinese to travel, and particularly with the widespread availability of “cut” tapes and CDs (dakou): remaindered product from the West yanked off course from their Chinese garbage dump destinations and filling shops with chaotic treasure troves.

Ilchi, Hanggai’s founding member, was caught up in the rap-metal fever that

swept Beijing in the late 90s and early aughts, forming T9 in the image of Rage Against the Machine. An ethnic Mongolian—one of China’s 55 Official ethnic minorities—he eventually gravitated toward the traditional music he was hearing during visits home to Inner Mongolia. T9 became Hanggai, and guitars made way for the tobshuur (two-stringed lute) and horse-head fiddle; growling heavy-metal vocals to the throat-singing of the steppe.

Hanggai led an early-aughts folk renaissance that saw musicians less interested in cranking amps than in investigating acoustic possibilities, and their own ethnic backgrounds, through a contemporary lens. After dominating the blossoming festival circuit at home, they performed at the world’s biggest festivals: Bonnaroo, Fuji Rock, Roskilde, and many more, and have become a leader of the new breed of band challenging what it means to play “Chinese” music.

Producer Bob Ezrin, who worked with the band on two records (not to mention with Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd, and many more), talks about how the band’s music is “totally informed by their Mongolian traditions” alongside their interest in and experience with rock and pop. What results is music that’s as ancient as it is of-the-moment, with a timelessness that speaks to a universality one might not expect, but which becomes crystal clear upon experiencing it.

It’s jarring at first, but the initial shock quickly gives way to something deeper, a process you can watch in real time in the video of Hanggai’s final performance on Sing My Song. It begins three seconds in, when one of the show’s coaches utters a confused “Wow” that seems uncontrollable; a hand on his chin and searching eyes throughout the video hint at a combination of curiosity and genuine puzzlement; by the three-and-a-half-minute mark we can almost hear an “Amen!”

Surely it won’t be far into the band’s set on Sept 28 that you’ll be hearing “Amen!”—and then some.

Jonathan Campbell lived in Beijing from 2000-2010 working in just about every capacity possible in the presentation, promotion, and production of music. His book, Red Rock: The Long, Strange March of Chinese Rock & Roll, came out in 2012. He works in the arts industry in Toronto.

Our Partnership with the Hoover InstitutionOur upcoming season focuses on the intersection of art and politics, a driving force for some of the world’s most poignant and memorable works of art. Throughout the 2019–20 season brochure, which you can find at the Stanford Live box office or by request, you will see a collection of political images and stories, including a series of iconic posters from the Hoover Institution’s world-renowned collection of political art.

Back in January, the Stanford Live marketing team along with our brochure designers paid a visit to the archives to see these stunning posters in person. We

were blown away by their beauty and vibrancy, and by the sheer volume of the collection itself!

Pictured here are just a couple of the posters highlighted in the season brochure—look out for an extended feature on these beautiful works of art in our next magazine! We are so grateful to be able to leverage the amazing faculty and student resources on campus to both contextualize our work and bring it to life.

Onstage and behind the scenes, Stanford students made many contributions to Stanford Live’s spring season. We partnered with the Stanford Concert Network (SCN), a student organization that presents music on campus, to present a series in the Bing Studio. Mentored by Stanford Live staff, SCN curators booked artists, planned each show’s production, created marketing campaigns, and served on performance nights as producers and hosts.

The series featured rising stars including disco-influenced singer/songwriter, dancer, and fashion designer Gavin Turek as well as jazz/R&B singer Dizzy Faye. SCN Curator Dante Zakhidov, a Ph.D. Candidate in Materials Science and Engineering, said “the Stanford Live staff helped me aspire to a high level of professionalism and attention to detail. They gave me control and oversight over the entire production while providing help and support along the entire way.”

Live From The Farm

Turning the spotlight to campus talent, student artists opened the SCN shows. Hajar Alzerma, a Masters Student in Environmental Engineering, sang her R&B originals in both Arabic and English, and called her performance “one of my favorite memories at Stanford. The venue was warm and intimate and allowed me to connect with the audience and have a fun performance!”

Student participation went hand in hand with other new directions in our Studio programs. We partnered with the

Stanford American Indian Organization to present queer indigenous rapper Dioganhdih, launching a new collaboration that will expand in our 2019–20 season, and in partnership with the Stanford Ethiopian and Eritrean Students’ Association, presented the Ethiopian-American singer/songwriter Berhana to an overflow crowd. Student stand-up comedians also opened for comedy nights introduced this year.

Students also played a vital role in our contemporary music programs,

with the Stanford New Ensemble joining Sō Percussion for “Amid the Noise,” an evening-length composition incorporating creative input from all its performers. The Stanford Symphony Orchestra gave a memorable performance of music by our 2018–19 Artist-in-Residence Nitin Sawhney, who led Symphony players through the experience of playing music in a pop vein.

Composition students also had the special opportunity to meet with

one of America’s most celebrated artists, multidisciplinary composer Meredith Monk, as she discussed her unique creative path and warmly encouraged students to find their own way into a life in art.
