MLA for Drumheller-Stettler Jack Hayden will remain a cabi-net minister in Alison Redford’s government. Redford was sworn in as Al-berta’s Premier on October 7. On Wednesday morning, she an-nounced her new Cabinet, which includes Jack Hayden as Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recre-ation. He also sits on the Govern-ment Committee for Community Development. “With this new team in place, we’re ready to work for Albertans on a new agenda. One of our fi rst jobs will be getting ready for the fall session and setting our agen-da to move forward,” Redford said.

Hayden was fi rst elected in the Drumheller-Stettler riding in 2007 in a by-election to replace MLA Shirley McClellan and again in 2008 in a general elec-tion. He served as Minister of In-frastructure, and most recently Minister of Agriculture and Ru-ral Development, prior to the PC leadership race. In the race, Hayden support-ed Doug Horner for leadership. Horner was appointed Deputy Premier and President of the Treasury Board and Enterprise. Hayden said during the race he is comfortable with any of the three candidates on the second ballot. “My working relationship with Alison is excellent, she is a very intelligent lady,” said Hayden during the race.

Drumheller has become a launching pad for a project that could make a signifi cant impact on young people in the valley now, and in the future. Th e RCMP has collaborated with the Duke of Edinburgh So-ciety to facilitate youth partici-pating in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards. Th is self-development pro-gram has had an eff ect on almost seven million young people in 130 countries. Drumheller is the fi rst community in Alberta, and one of fi ve in Western Canada to introduce the partnership. It is a three-year pilot program. On Tuesday afternoon, Con-stable Tom Dobrich, was joined by representatives of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards to introduce the program to Drumheller Val-ley Secondary School high school students. “It is an opportunity to im-prove yourself and the commu-nity you live in,” said Dobrich to the students gathered in Kaleido-scope Th eatre. Prince Phillip, Duke of Edin-burgh, established the award in 1956 as a way four young people to develop a sense of respon-sibility to themselves and their community. Th e program was launched in Canada in 1966. It is a prestigious award that is recog-nized internationally. It is the sec-ond highest honour a youth can earn in Alberta, and a member of the Royal family or the Governor General presents a Gold Award in a national ceremony. One of the unique aspects of the program is that it is self-directed and individual. Young people from the age of 14-25 can participate. To complete the program they must fulfi l require-ments in four categories; com-

munity service, personal skill development, physical recreation and an adventurous journey. To earn a Gold Award, there is also a residential project where the young person will take on a challenge where they will live and work outside their regular sup-port system for fi ve days. Earning a Bronze Award takes in the area of six months and re-quires 15 hours of community Service, 30 hours of physical rec-reation and a two-day adventur-ous journey. A Silver Award re-quires a year to complete and has a community service component of 24 hours over 12 months or 30 hours over six months, 40 hours of physical recreation over 20 weeks and a three day adventur-ous journey. Th e Gold standard takes about 18 months to complete and requires 90 hours of commu-

nity service or 60 hours over 12 months, 50 hours in physical rec-reation of 25 weeks, a four-day adventurous journey and a resi-dential project. Benefi ts of the program include growth and self-discovery, moti-vation and goal setting. Achiev-ing the Award is a great addition to a resume and can assist youth in earning scholarships. Constable Dobrich told the students that the program is of-ten off ered as part of the curricu-lum of private schools and col-leges. Th e program can be done indi-vidually, or through groups such as the Sea Cadets, Guide and Scout groups or school. Th e partnership with the RCMP has allowed the com-munity to build a local mentor-ship group and in preparation of launching the program have

a trained team of volunteers to help facilitate the program. Continuing this week, Dobrich and representatives of Th e Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards are pre-senting the program to schools throughout the area. Th e stu-dents will be provided with reg-istration forms and materials explaining the Awards and the community challenge. For more information on the program contact the RCMP at 403-823-7590 or program man-ager Chelsey Dawes 403-651-8173. More information can be found at www.dukeofed.org. Th ey have also launched a local blog found at http://theaward-cyc.wordpress.com. Watch for more information on a community launch in the coming weeks.

Police Committee looking for prioritiesPatrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Th e Drumheller Police Com-mittee has a goal of making po-licing in Drumheller refl ective of the community’s needs, and is going to the public to learn more. Th e committee has been active and wants to learn from those whom the police serve, what they believe should be priorities. “It is keeping with our mandate of looking for input,” said com-mittee chair Fred Makowecki. Because the Drumheller RCMP Detachment also provides ser-vice to rural areas, they are hold-ing their next regular meeting in Delia, as well as an open house on November 10. On November 24, they will be holding an open house at 7 p.m. at the Civic Centre in the AV Room to look at priorities and solicit input. Makowecki said the committee was successful in getting out to meet with the community at the annual partnership fair last June. Th ey received about 50 complet-ed surveys on what residents felt were priorities in the community. To continue to build this mine of information, they have decid-ed to post a short survey on the Town of Drumheller website for residents of the town and area to simply fi ll out to help determine the next year of policing priori-ties. To fi nd the survey, simply go to www.dinosaurvalley.com. Th e policing survey is under the 'Town Services' tab.

Downtown digging continuesResidents visiting downtown on October 12 would have had to make a detour to get around Centre Street. Construction continues on the water pipes in the downtown area. Crews are replacing the cast iron water mains to improve the quality and stability of the water. The project is scheduled to be completed in mid November.

Small business in downtown Drumheller remains vibrant de-spite changing economic tides. While many cores ebb and fl ow with economic challenges, down-town Drumheller appears to be holding its own. According to Connie Tremblay of downtown Drumheller, the merchant’s association is about 33 strong and have come off a suc-cessful summer of events. Th ese include Motorcycle Madness, and most recently Alberta Arts Day

celebrations, to name a few. Right now, they are gearing up for the Downtown Trick or Treat. “Th e events are a draw to get people to come down, which is great for business,” said Tremblay. She said this is successful be-cause it is a collaboration. Each business can contribute to the event, and benefi t, rather than go-ing alone. Each merchant can also draw on the expertise and experi-ence of its neighbour to make it a success. One of the rules of business is competition. Tremblay refers to

MLA Doug Griffi th’s presentation called “13 Ways to Kill Your Com-munity.” “He says how important it is to have that competition. People want that competition. Some say, ‘Why should I move downtown, because there are already two cof-fee shops?’ Why not three coff ee shops?” she said. Th e eff orts to keep the down-town community strong continue. Right now, they are in the midst of a heritage inventory, with hopes of working towards becoming part of the Mainstreet Program.

Th e Centennial of Coal Mining committee is working on erecting a memorial to fallen miners, and the idea of creating a town centre is still on the agenda. Th e Town of Drumheller is also taking a very serious look at mov-ing back to the core. “Once the town offi ce is down-town, I think it is defi nitely going to be a benefi t. It is going to es-tablish a core. When people stop off at town hall, they will be right there, and can shop,” said Trem-blay. “Th ere really is a lot going on.”

Downtown business community remains vibrant

Next week is Small Business Week in Canada and in recog-nition, small businesses in the Drumheller Valley will be par-ticipating in a symposium being held in Greentree Mall from Oc-tober 18 to 20. “Th e Chamber hasn’t off ered a small business week event for a couple years,” said Roxanne Clark, Offi ce and Membership Coordinator of the Drumheller and District Chamber of Com-merce. “We felt we wanted to en-gage our membership and off er them information that is relevant to the small business owner.” Th e symposium is a joint eff ort between ATB Financial and the Chamber.

Th e three day event will focus on a diff erent aspect of small business each day. “It was infor-mation that we thought would be pertinent to the challenges small business owners face,” said Clark. Technology will be the focus on the fi rst day, with guest speak-er John Shoff from Reality Bytes giving a presentation on how business owners can use social media. Th e Drumheller RCMP will be giving a talk dealing with coun-terfeiting and credit card fraud. On the second day, fi nance will be the hot topic and Todd Hirsch, Sr. Economist at ATB, will give a short presentation entitle “Every-where a Sign! Alberta in a dan-gerous global economy.” Th e last day of the symposium

will deal with one of life’s abso-lutes: taxes. Hansine Kostelecky, from Numberz Accounting, will present “Starting a Small Busi-ness, Accounting and Tax Th ings to Consider.” Each session will be followed by a Q&A period and an oppor-tunity for businesses to display their ideas and network. “Th ere will be a wealth of information,” promised Clark. Chamber members can attend for free, but the event is not lim-ited to members. Th e symposium is open to the public as well, with registration fees of $10 per day or $25 for all three. For more information and to register visit drumhellerchamber.com.

Small businesses in Drumheller will have the opportunity to share ideas and learn about the issues of the current market. The sympo-sium will be held in Greentree Mall from October 18 to 20.

Th e fi rst step of realizing a Main Street Program in Drumheller is going ahead, as a historical inventory of the town is underway. Th e town has contracted Donald Luxton and Associ-ates to conduct the invento-ry. Th e heritage consultant completing the inventory is Laura Pasacreta. Th e goal is to identify 50 buildings to be considered as heri-tage buildings. Th ese build-ings are not limited to just downtown, but the whole community. “It is about preserving our history. In creating an in-ventory, we are saying these are buildings that are repre-sentative of our past,” said downtown businessman Mike Todor. “Th ey may not necessarily be the pretti-est buildings in our town. A miner’s shack might be a heritage building because he is representative of our past.” Todor is planning to par-ticipate in the project if his building, which was built by legendary coal magnate Jesse Gouge, is accepted. He sees many positives for

building owners to partici-pate. “If you need to do some work on the building, you can get some funding to as-sist you with the work,” said Todor. “Th ey will pay a por-tion of it.”

He admits that some property owners have not signed on. One of the goals is to have the building re-main representative of its history. If an owner signs on to the project and wants to access funds for conser-vation, they would have to make sure they main-tain the appearance of the building. “If you are in the program, there are some restrictions on the exterior itself,” said Todor. Th e Heritage designation is intact even if the proper-ty changes hands. Th e new

owner would have to abide by the restrictions. “If someone buys a heri-tage building, I would think the person would be en-thused rather than want to do away with it,” said Todor. Todor explains that this is the fi rst step for the com-munity to join the Main Street Program. A Main Street Program came through Drumheller about two decades ago. He said the program has changed since, and rather than sim-ply refurbishing the build-ings and walking away, this is a three year program that carries on and includes a social component that is geared to keep the town vi-brant. Th e inventory has a cost of $50,000, which has been sponsored by the Town of Drumheller, the Drumhell-er and District Chamber of Commerce and Commu-nity Futures. Th ere is an open house on Tuesday, October 18 at the civic centre. “At the open house we will be discussing what the program is about and to let people know what is hap-pening,” said Todor.

Obituaries

LARSENChristian (Chris)

December 18, 1928- October 10, 2011

Chris passed away peacefully after a brief stay at the Drumheller Regional Hospital on Thanksgiving Monday. Chris is survived by his wife of 57 years Tina, his children John (Colleen), Evelyn, Anna, Dana, Elsie (Brent), 10 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and many friends. Chris was a longtime resident of the valley, in Lehigh and for the past 25 years, in Drumheller, where he was known as the manager of Juniper Manor Apts. Chris had a quick wit and passion for jokes. A common saying was "Did I tell you the one about..." Tina and the family would like to thank the staff at DRH, and all for the kind words and condolences that have been received over the past few days. At Chris's request, a private family gathering will be held after his cremation. 41c

Town Council awarded a contract to Associated Engineering for the supply of professional engineering services at the Wastewater Treatment Facilities in the amount of $66,781.00. The contract is for system upgrades and optimization. The budgeted amount is $40,000, leaving a shortfall of $26,781 which will come from reserves.

• • • • • • Mayor Yemen asked Council members to indicate preferences they may have to sit on any of the town’s committees. The request is made annually should any councillor wish to change committees as the town’s representatives.

• • • • • • Town Council will put 15 properties up for the 2011 Tax Recovery Public Auction. If taxes on the properties have not been paid within the prescribed time, they may be subject to be put up for auction. Caveats are registered on the properties and reserves are set for each property. Letters to property owners will be sent prior to the end of 2011 and the auction date would be held January 25, 2012. According to Acting Director of Corporate Services Bill Wulff, most taxes and associated interest on the listed properties are paid prior to the auction.

• • • • • • The Drumheller Housing Authority has requested that the property being used by Sandstone Manor be made exempt from taxation. The Municipal Government Act does allow the town to provide exemption on the property in question. The amount is question is $8331.30 plus a late payment penalty of $558.24 for a total of $8889.54.According to DHA board chair Jay Garbutt, the object of the administration is to provide rental amounts to the occupants at as low a rate as possible. There is a very low or zero vacancy rate in the Affordable Housing in Sandstone Manor at present. The motion was defeated.

• • • • • • Bill Davidson, president of the Newcastle Recreation Association (N.R.A.), has written a letter to Town Council, requesting that that body be allowed to take on ownership of the Newcastle Hall for lease or sale in the amount of $1.00. Expenses associated with the hall would become the responsibility of the N.R.A., but prior to transfer, the N.R.A. is requesting the town provide assistance with drainage issue remediation on the property. The Newcastle Hall is the only community hall left that is owned by the town. No community halls in the valley pay any property taxes. The motion passed.

Town council has had a fi rst peek at the plans of what a town hall would look like located in the current Drumheller Public Library and Civic Centre Building. Earlier this year, the Town of Drumheller began to looking into moving Town Hall to the downtown facil-ity. Th e town was able to se-cure Municipal Sustainabil-ity Initiative (MSI) funds

for the move. “My biggest thing is I am embarrassed when I walk into Town Hall. We have a Town Hall that is not hand-icapped accessible, that is just wrong,” said Mayor Terry Yemen. He adds, the Civic Centre is a much more modern fa-cility. “Th e Civic Centre is a lit-tle bit of an older building, but it was not built in 1953.

With the energy effi ciency, we are going to save a lot just in operating the build-ing,” said Yemen. While they now have pre-liminary drawings, and the approval to use MSI funds for the move, they have not completed the fi nal costing for the project. Council is planning to share the plans with resi-dent later on this month or in early November.

The most important meal of the day

Neil Greene, representing North Drum Plumbing, hands a cheque for $200, a week's worth of gro-ceries, to Principal Chris Connell of Greentree School. The money will go towards the breakfast meal program which provides a healthy meal for 40 to 60 stu-dents per day. Volunteers arrive at 7:30 a.m. everyday to prepare the meals and ensure students are given a wholesome breakfast. If interested in volunteering or donating, contact Chris Connell at 403-823-5244.

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20Aries, make memories this week because the person with whom you have been spending considerable time must move on in the next few days. Romance is out of the cards.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21Taurus, if you are on a health kick, then this is the time to start incor-porating some exercise into your routine. If joining a gym is out, then simply walk with friends.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21You have every excuse in the book not to get something done, Gemini. The fact remains that the work will still be there even after much pro-crastination.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22Cancer, momentary lapses in judge-ment could cause signifi cant prob-lems. Stay focused on the tasks at hand to avoid any confl icts in the future.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23Leo, friendship is the name of the game this week, and you will meet some new people who have the po-tential to be lifelong buddies. Intro-duce your existing friends, too.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22Sometimes the answer is right in front of your eyes even if you can't see it right away, Virgo. Look more closely at the possibilities and stop naysaying.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23Libra, you may be reconsidering a recent decision. It just may be too late to change things at this point, so you will have to go with the fl ow.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22Scorpio, news you receive is less than satisfying. Not one to give up, you will fi ght to let others know of the injustice that was done and gar-ner some supporters.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21Happy times call for a celebration, Sagittarius. Host a party or a get-to-gether with friends and family. Use the time to catch up on old times and relationships.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20Capricorn, there's not much to do this week that you can't tackle at another time. This means you can have a few days to simply do what-ever it is you desire.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18Take a few days to relax, Aquarius. It will clear your head and put you in a better place for making hard de-cisions that seem to crop up out of nowhere.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20It's time to put that romance into the next gear, Pisces. You don't want to run the risk of missing out on love.

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are for-matted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column and box. Each number can ap-pear only once in each row, column and box. You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

I like gnocchi as a side dish, not only because it is delicious but also because it’s a nice change from the usual. I think of it as a cross between potatoes and pasta. You can serve it with a variety of sauces, pesto or just toss in oil and a sprinkling of parmesan.  It takes just minutes to cook and also to keep on hand because it has a good shelf life. You will fi nd it packaged near the pastas, usually. But is also quite simple to make from scratch with just a few ingredients.  Here is a tasty way to serve it:

Gnocchi with Balsamic Sauce3 cloves garlic½ cup diced onion6 mushrooms, chopped4 small sweet peppers, julienned½ cup cherry tomatoes, halved4 leaves fresh basil, chopped½ cup balsamic vinegar1 cup butter2 cups  gnocchi

Cook the gnocchi in boiling water until it fl oats to the top – drain.

Cook garlic and onion in oil until soft, then add the remaining vegetables and basil. Cook for 5 minutes. Stir in the butter to melt, add vinegar and simmer for 20 minutes. Toss the cooked gnocchi in the sauce to serve.

While the Dragons have fallen three in a row, coach Dan Price says they are play-ing strong hockey and are looking to improve on their next road trip. Th e Dragons are on their way north this weekend to play the Bonnyville Ponti-acs and the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. Th is follows on a week where they bowed to the Sherwood Park Crusad-ers and twice to the Camrose Kodiaks. Last Th ursday, in Camrose, Price says the team started slow and did not manage the puck well in the neutral zone. Th ey improved through the second half of the game, and goals by Keith Csizmadia in the second period and Sam Lawson in the third, had the teams tied at two with sev-

en minutes to go. Camrose exploited a Dragons error, which lead to a two-on-one for the game winner. “It was really a good fi nish for us,” said Price. He said the team contin-ued to play strong heading home last Saturday. Mitch Owsley and Trevor Tracy kept the game tied at two af-ter one period. Brody Robin-son scored in the third keep-ing the game tied after two. Th e Crusaders went up 5-3 in the third, but in the dying seconds, Ryan Bloom scored on the powerplay, ending the gamed 5-4 for the Crusaders. “I thought we had the ma-jority of the scoring chances by far, and we deserved to win that game," said Price. “It could have been our best game of the year.” Th e follow up on Sunday night was lack lustre. Cam-

rose dominated from start to fi nish, winning 4-0. “We were fl at, I didn’t feel like we were the better team in that particular game,” said Price. “We were a bit of a road weary team and a bit beat up. To be where we want to be this year we need to push through and get those points and win those games on the road. Th ere were some highs and lows, but hopefully some good les-sons learned by the guys.” Th e Dragons are in Bonny-ville this Friday and then in Fort McMurray on Saturday. “It is exciting, we get to go right back on the road… it is a great challenge and test for us Friday and Saturday,” said Price. Th e Dragons are back home on Tuesday, October 18 to play the Brooks Ban-dits.

The Drumheller Dragons are back on the road this weekend heading to Bonnyville and Fort McMurray.

They will be back on home ice on October 18 to play the Bandits.

Th e Sabres Senior girls Soc-cer team is heading to zones this weekend and are sure to face some tough competition. Th e Sabres, led by a strong senior element are hoping for a strong showing. While they have not had any games since their home tournament where they were not able to score, they have been working hard to improve their game. “We are working on it one day at a time,” said coach Gavin Makse. “I tell the girls ‘you are a better team today

than you were yesterday.’ Th at is our motto, to grow every-day as a team and an individ-ual.” Coach Makse says the team has been playing against adult soccer players to get some game experience. “Playing against older, more skilled players is helping us,” he said, adding that the faster level of play is helping the Sa-bres adapt. Th e tournament is in Co-chrane and has a round robin format. Th e Sabres are in a pool with Canmore, George McDougald of Airdrie and Foothills Composite High School from Okotoks. Th e team’s fi rst game is

against Foothills Composite at 10:30 a.m. “I think what is key for us is if we get that fi rst goal in the fi rst game it can give us confi -dence and really build on that momentum,” said Makse. Th ey then play Canmore at 1:45 p.m. and George Mc-Dougald at 5 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the pools cross over and how they fi n-ish will determine when they are back on the fi eld. “It comes down to which team wants it the most at zones, and we are relying on those Grade 12's to lead us with their experience,” said Makse.

Garden Designs

As promised here are the tips to growing a healthy

rose garden:

1: When choosing a rose bush, make sure it’s a

sturdy, proven rose variety for the area you live in.

There are usually great folks at the garden centers

who can help you choose something that will

grow in the area you live.

2: When adding a rose to your garden, make sure

to give it lots of room to grow and reach its mature

size.

3: Roses have to receive at least six hours of direct

sunlight a day, so make sure they are planted in

the sunniest place possible.

4: Dig a hole twice the width of the pot and as deep

as the nursery pot or root mass of the new plant.

5: Roses thrive in enriched soil so improve the

soil at the same time you plant the rose. Several

shovelfuls of composted manure worked into the

area around the plant will do wonders.

6: Feed your roses monthly during the growing

season. So as soon as you see new growth April/

May until the 1st of July. Then stop feeding to let

the plant harden off for the winter season.

7: Water roses weekly if nature doesn’t do it for

you, and always water after fertilizing. You can

preserve some moisture by spreading a 2-inch

layer of mulch on the ground around the plants.

8: To help keep pests and diseases away, keep leaf

litter cleaned up and spray them down periodically

with water. Again ensure they get plenty of

sunlight and have plenty of room for the wind to

keep the leaves dry. This will help eliminate a lot of

problems.

9: Snipping off spent fl owers keeps roses growing

strong, and encourages more blooms. Stop

snipping by late summer to allow the plant to get

ready for fall and also allow some rose hips to grow

for winter interest. At this time you can also trim

out any damaged or old canes that have no life in

them.

10: If you have poor winter protection, like other

shrubs and trees growing in your garden, you may

want to mulch the roses in by mounting up about

12 inch of mulch around the bottom of the plants.

But don’t do this until it get fairly cold during the

day because you don’t want to keep the plant too

warm or it won’t know winter is coming. Also make

sure to take the mulch away as soon as it starts to

show any signs of life in the spring. If it sprouts too

soon it may get some frost damage.

11: Lastly, give roses at least three years to mature

and make sure they still have good air fl ow around

them at their mature size.

12: Make sure you take time to smell the roses after

all the work you have done to get them to grow

for you.

Have a great week
