After years of waiting, Golden Hills School Di-vision is very excited to hear the announcement from Premier Redford and Minister of Educa-tion, Jeff Johnson of two new area schools. Over the past number of years, the communi-ties in East Wheatland of Hussar, Standard, Rockyford and Gleichen have been experiencing challenges with respect to shifting student pop-ulations and quality of school facilities. Last year, in order to provide solutions to this problem, a working group of parents rep-resenting each of those four school communi-ties was formed to ex-plore possible solutions for education in the area. After an involved process of collaboration and consultation that extended broadly to all four communities, this Working Group pro-

posed closure of those four community schools and consolidation of all the students in the area to one K-12 centralized school. Th e GHSD Board of Trustees endorsed this proposal and with this announcement, the province has made the decision to support this area and these four com-munities with a new consolidated school to support all the students in East Wheatland. “We are very excited with today’s announce-ments. I can’t say enough about the Working Group and the excellent job they have done in moving this whole situa-tion forward,” said Gold-en Hills superintendent Bevan Daverne. “Truly, this is a solution that not only is good for students, but is also a model for rural sustainability. For the province to recog-nize that work and sup-port all the communities in East Wheatland with a consolidated solution

and to fund a state of the art facility where all our East Wheatland staff and students are able to work and learn together is fan-tastic news for all of us!”

Th e second school announcement im-pacts the community of Th ree Hills, where, for the past eight years, the Prairie Christian Acad-emy’s campus has been split between multiple campuses in a variety of leased space. Th is an-nouncement provides

funding to take the el-ementary campus and right-size it for the entire K-12 student population. Th e addition of teach-ing spaces would in-clude support for high school program courses as well as a new gymna-sium suitable for senior high athletics. Th is an-nouncement will mean that all PCA students and staff will be able to learn and work togeth-er in a modern board-owned facility. Board chair, Dave Price, stated, “Th is is a wonderful announce-ment today for the com-munity of Th ree Hills and parents, staff and students at PCA. From an educational and fi -nancial perspective – for the culture of that school

community, this is an ex-cellent solution and we are very appreciative of the support we have re-ceived from the province on this situation.” Th e projects are part of Premier Alison Red-ford’s promised invest-ment in education infra-structure and the second major capital announce-ment this week. “We made a com-mitment to build new schools and we’re do-ing just that,” said Pre-mier Redford. “Th is is about more than bricks and mortar — it’s about building strong commu-nities so all our kids get the best possible start in life. By investing in schools today, we are in-vesting in ourselves, and our province.”

Although it may not necessarily look like it on the outside, the inside of the Drumheller Civic Centre is buzzing with activity. At the Monday, April 29 meeting of Th e Com-mittee of the Whole, CAO Ray Romanetz gave Council an update estimate for the building to be complete. Should all go well, the Town could begin moving Town Hall to the Civic Centre by mid June. “As far as a completion date, substantial comple-tion, meaning the build-ing can be turned over to the owner, but with a number of things...need-ing to be completed...our best guesstimate will be substantially completed by the end of May,” said Romanetz. “We could start moving sometime between June 15 and 30.” Estimates earlier this year had an earlier com-pletion date, but the Town is confi dent the new timeline is accurate.

“Although it looks like there is a lot of work to be done, I think every-thing will be done in a reasonably timely man-ner,” said Romanetz. Th e move of Town Hall to the Civic Cen-tre was confi rmed early in 2012. Th e desire was to have the municipal centre of Drumheller in a more central location

and modernized. Given the age and of the cur-rent Town Hall, it was felt renovating it was not practical and would have taken considerable work to bring the building up to current building codes. Th e cost of the renova-tion is roughly $2 mil-lion. Of that, $1.5 mil-lion was covered by a

provincial grant. Th e Civic Centre was gutted last fall and con-struction has proceeded to create a new space for the heart of the Town’s governance. In addition to moving in, Council is consider-ing an opening for the public in September.

Town Hall move set for late June

The Town of Drumheller is hoping to be-gin moving in to their new Town Hall lo-cation, the old Civic Centre, between June 15 and 30, with an opening for the public in September. The move was decided early

in 2012 after provincial grant money be-came available, covering $1.5 million of the roughy $2 million cost.

Aulenback was chosen at random from members who took the time to fi ll out the BCF’s membership survey. The sur-vey was also a big win for the BCF. The survey showed a 92 per cent customer satisfaction rate. To improve, the BCF will give staff further training on fi tness equipment, have staff circulate in the fi tness area more and interact with guests, develop programs in the fall, and hold an increased hours of operation pi-lot in the fall.

Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools has announced the ap-pointment of Mr. Scott Morrison as its new superintendent. Morrison has been with the Di-vision for 20 years. Prior to join-ing Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools, Mr. Morrison spent four years with Fort McMurray Catho-lic. Board Chair, Mrs. Mary Sten-gler notes Mr. Morrison has a long history with the Division, serving as a teacher, elementary principal, high school principal, division principal, and associate superintendent. “He knows our culture, shares our core beliefs, and aspires to achieve our vision. We are con-fi dent the Division will continue to fl ourish under the leadership Scott will bring,” said Stengler.

Mr. Morrison has a Bachelor of Education, a Master of Education in Administration and Curricu-lum, and is currently in the pro-cess of writing his doctoral disser-

tation. “I am excited about continuing the innovative work the Division is doing in the areas of English language learning, literacy, read-ing remediation, French immer-sion, and professional learning,” said Morrison. Aside from academics, Mr. Morrison is a strong supporter of the fi ne arts, technology and athletics and hopes to guide the Division in continued program improvement. Mr. Morrison is married to Lor-raine, his wife of close to 25 years. Mrs. Morrison is a Grade 2 teach-er with the school Division, and they have three children aged 15, 19, and 21. Cinco de Mayo FareCelebrate Cinco de Mayo with some delicious Mexican foods!

Here is a dish I concocted while trying to blend two of my favorite foods into one. I served it to a large crowd and it was a hit, so I will share it. This is a fun, fattening recipe - but if you make it once a year you can justify it! (you can lighten it up using chicken breast strips and light cheese, etc.)

Lori’s Nacho WingsUse an amount of wings according to the number of people you plan to serve this to. (remove the tips and divide if using whole wings)

Dip them in melted butter – I discovered this to be a good way to get the coating to stick well.

Then roll in crushed nacho chips. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes to an hour - or until they are done. (there is nothing worse than biting into a pink chicken wing, so be sure to test the doneness).

Spread a layer of wings on the bottom of a baking dish (again the size will depend on the number of people).

Top with grated cheese (I used the Mexican blend with jalapeno bits), some salsa and chopped green onion or chilis. Then add another layer of wings, cheese, onion, salsa and jalapenos. Bake at 350 until everything is melted nicely - about 15 minutes.

Serve with guacamole, sour cream and more salsa – just as you would a plate of loaded nachos.

Join him to learn some of these stories, see his photo exhibit and purchase his seminal book. Part of what made Alberta strong: coal mining. Part of what keeps Alberta vibrant: recreational pleasures. The two join together in our upcoming May Day Miners' Festival off er-ing at the East Coulee School Museum. Sudoku Solution Last Week's Crossword

SudokuHere’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fi ll each row, column and box. Each num-ber can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can fi gure out the order in which the numbers will ap-pear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Friends may think we have forgotten

when at times they see us smileLittle do they know the heartachethat our smile hides all the while.

Beautiful memories are wonderful things

They last till the longest dayThey never wear out. They never get lost

and can never be given away.

To some you may be forgottenTo others a part of the past

But to those who loved and lost you

Your memory will always last.

One day we will all be together again.

We will always love you. You are missed.

IN MEMORIAM

Every spring individu-als celebrate their moth-ers on Mother's Day. It has evolved from a day to honor mothers to one that recognizes all spe-cial women. Th erefore, if there is a woman in one's life who isn't a biologi-cal mother—but special nonetheless—Mother's Day can be a time to tell her how much she is ap-preciated. Th ere are many rea-sons a person may want to honor a woman that is not his or her moth-er. Perhaps the person's own mother has passed away or is not prominent in this individual's life. Maybe there is a grand-mother or aunt with whom one is especially close. Th ere may be a teacher or mentor that has touched the life of a person in a special way. Although Mother's Day is built around giv-ing thanks to Mom, it's certainly acceptable to thank women in addition to dear old Mom. Fur-thermore, one needn't wait until a specifi c day in May to honor a nota-ble woman. Th is can be

done all year long with certain gestures and sen-timents. For those who are cel-ebrating all women on Mother's Day, here are some ways to set the day apart.• Create a handmade card with personalized sentiments that refl ect the unique relationship with this special wom-an. Th is can mean more than a prepurchased card that may not off er the right words.• Find out her interests and spend a day doing entirely what she wants to do. It doesn't neces-sarily have to take place on Mother's Day. A trip to a museum or a day at the park—whatever it may be—can be a nice outing.• Treat her to a special dinner. Ask about favor-ite foods and create a meal at home. If dining out is a must, choose a day other than Mother's Day to avoid the crowds and have intimate mo-ments with just the two of you, especially if you are also honoring your own mother on Mother's

Day.• Find something you both enjoy and then go and do that. Maybe you met up due to a hobby or interest. Remember the fi rst day you met and reminisce by heading to that place for a celebra-tion.• Have an extended fam-ily fi esta. Host a Moth-er's Day party at home

and single out all the special women in atten-dance. Serve cocktails and enjoy the time spent together. Mother's Day is a spe-cial time of the year to honor not only a per-son's mom but also any other notable woman in his or her life. Th e holi-day can be customized any way a person sees fi t.

“Tobacco defense”

gains popularity

Michael James| inSide Drumheller

A new defence is gain-ing popularity among the inmates of the Drumheller Institution, forcing prosecutors to jump through one more hoop to convict those charged with smuggling drugs into the peniten-tiary. Defendants charged with attempting to smuggle drugs into the prison, have claimed they were under the im-pression the contraband they were attempting to bring in was tobacco. Th e “tobacco defense,” as it is becoming known, has had some success so far. Federal Crown pros-ecutor Colin Kloot sees it as a growing issue. “I think it’s problem-atic. We’ve just had two trials where the to-bacco defense arose,” said Kloot. “In the fi rst case, the inmate raised the defence that he had been told to pick up the package and that it was tobacco. He got off be-cause he raised a rea-sonable doubt, notwith-standing we said he was willfully blind.” On April 11, 2010, Ashley Yardley retrieved a package on the Institu-tion perimeter. He was immediately caught and claimed he was unaware the package contained drugs. A witness for the defense, a fellow inmate, testifi ed he told the de-fendant the package contained tobacco. Yardley was aquitted. Th e inmate who asked Yardley to retrieve the packaged was charged and subsequently found guilty. In the second case, in which the charged in-mate was acquitted on April 12, Donald Hold-en was alleged to have attempted to bring in two packages contain-ing cannabis resin after returning from a meet-ing in town.

Upon arriving at the Institution, he was in-formed he would be searched. Afterwards, two staff members saw him throw two packages on the roof of the War-den’s offi ce. Packages were retrieved by staff on the grounds near the offi ce. “He testifi ed he was told he was only pick-ing up tobacco and that he had only one package and a Bic lighter,” said Kloot. “He had the per-son who told him to get

the package testify, who said, as far as he knew it was just tobacco. Th at’s just ridiculous. No one asks for tobacco and gets drugs instead.” Judge Judith Shriar, who presided over the trial, felt there was suf-fi cient doubt if Holden was in possession of the drugs in question, due to the inconsistencies between the staff mem-bers’ reports of where the objects landed and where they were found. In February of last

year, Justin Neuman was found not guilty of smuggling drugs into the Institution using the tobacco defense. Tobacco is prohibited in the Institution, but not an illegal substance outside. “Because tobacco is contraband there, but not an illegal substance, they can’t be charged externally for having it,” said Kloot. Th e defense adds an-other step for prosecu-tors and Kloot expects

to see more inmates charged with attempt-ing to smuggle drugs use the tobacco defense, given the success rate of it so far. “We then have to prove, beyond a reason-able doubt, they knew, ought to have known, or

are absolutely lying. It adds a new dimension to what we have to prove. Word goes around the pen very quickly. Th e fi rst guy was successful and so was the second,” said Kloot. “I’m expect-ing a lot more of this to come forward.”

Badlands Lacrosse is getting a help-ing hand from the Calgary Rough-necks. On Saturday, $5 from every ticket sale, using a special code, will be do-nated to Badlands Lacrosse. “We’re getting $5 from the (Cal-gary) Roughnecks per ticket that’s purchased. Th e money will go to-wards promoting lacrosse in the area next season. We’re hoping to bring the Roughnecks to schools and have them do some demonstrations for the kids,” said Brandi Belliveau, vice president of Badlands Lacrosse. Th e game starts at 4:30 p.m. on Sat-urday, May 4, at the Saddledome. Lacrosse season has been going steady for three weeks already. Th e Midget Raptors are looking for their fi rst win of the season on Sat-urday when they take on the Innisfail Phantoms in the Drumheller Memo-rial Arena at 7 p.m. Th e Midget Raptors are heading into the game with a three game losing streak, being bested in their last out-ing 8-2 by the Red Deer Chiefs. Th e Pee Wee Raptors are also look-ing to break into the win column this weekend. On Friday, May 3, at 7 p.m., the Pee Wee’s will take on the Olds Stingers in the Drumheller Arena. “We’ve been having a tough go of it so far, but we have been improving. We had a lot of new kids this year. Th e

most important things we work on every practice are shooting, passing, catching, and positioning,” said Ren Dumaine, head coach of the Pee Wee Raptors. Th e Pee Wee’s were defeated 10-3 by the Sylvan Lake Buccaneers two weeks ago. Th e Novice Raptors have had a busy schedule so far, but are still looking for their fi rst win of the season on Sat-urday when they host the Blackfalds Warriors at 4 p.m. in the Drumheller Arena. Th e Tykes are looking for some help to get their season off the ground. ““Th ey’re having fun and learning, but we’re in desperate need of players. We only have seven kids and we need 12 to keep our team this year. We’re looking for kids to register late. It’s a requirement of the league that you have to have a minimum of 12 players,” said Dan Belliveau, head coach of the Tykes. Should the team not have 12 play-ers soon, they will have to cancel their season. If that happens, they will still play as much as possible outside of the league. “We’ll continue to practice and pick up games with whoever we can, wher-ever we can,” said Belliveau. Th e Mini-Tykes are set to start their season this weekend when they take on the Red Deer Chiefs at the Drum-heller Arena at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
