Because of YOU, Van Orsdel Commons is Taking ShapeGolden Eagle Construction is making good use of the time we’ve had this winter to open up walls in old Bridger cottage as they prepare to transform it into Van Orsdel Commons, the home for the chaplain’s program at Intermountain. Structural engineers are checking every nook and cranny to make sure the remodeled building will be both safe and sound for the increased occupancy of the building. The new space will host chapel services, trainings, and social gatherings for staff, children and families.

Some additional supports have already been put in place, but there is quite a bit more structural work that must be done before work starts in earnest this spring. Intermountain Facility Manager James Spradlin is managing the project and is hopeful that the work will be far enough along by June so that donors and families gathered for Recognition Day will have a chance to tour the building.

Thank you for your support of the project and for what it will mean for the spiritual and cultural care of children, families and staff for years to come.

Changing The Lives of Children

Nobody thought Ruby and Ashley’s family would make it. But we’re helping their parents to communicate with each other so they can care for their daughters more effectively. Their mom is growing, and their dad is lightening up.”

-- Intermountain Family-Based Counselor

Unique Professional Care for Montana Kids and FamiliesNowhere is the vision of Intermountain’s future more obvious than in the expansion of vital, in-demand psychological services. The faith and support of donors like you have allowed us to develop a sound

psychological assessment clinic in Helena. Joining our long-time clinical director Dr. Elizabeth Kohlstaedt, Ph.D., is Dr. Eric Aune, Ph.D., Pediatric Neuropsychologist, now providing a variety of services, including neuropsychological, neurodevelopmental and targeted assessments.

Additionally, Dr. Julian Nolen is now offering general psychological assessments. These services are all in high demand and allow Intermountain to take one more step into the world of integrated services.

Thank you for helping to provide this high level of compassionate care to kids and families in need.

Holly is working on her application for Intermountain’s Complete Your Dreams Scholarship. In fact, obtaining the scholarship so she can go to college is Holly’s #1 goal—not unusual for a high school senior—but for Holly it’s more than a little exciting. “A year ago, my best grade was a D,” she says. “I almost dropped out of school several times.”

Holly’s parents struggled financially and with alcohol and drug addictions. Tension gradually rose to a breaking point until, in an intense and violent moment, the man whom Holly and her brother had always known as Dad, told her he was not her father at all! He took the family’s only vehicle and left—never to return.

Holly was lucky to find support through an Intermountain therapist. She always turns to her therapist to share her troubles and her successes—like a recent A- on a test. Intermountain has provided intensive therapy, but they also encourage her daily with positive messages to help Holly “re-write her script for success” in high school and beyond.

The Complete Your Dreams Scholarship was established in 2006 by Earl and Linda Bates, ranchers in Oregon and homeowners in the Flathead Valley. The scholarship is available to any student who has been part of one of Intermountain’s therapeutic programs. “After high school, I was detailing cars for a dollar an hour,” Earl Bates says. “I really had no idea what I was going to do with my life. I have a real simpatico with young people who don’t have a jump start in life.”

The Bateses have added to the scholarship fund every year for more than ten years, and the proceeds provide several students with the means to receive a college education.

I have a real simpatico with young people whodon’t have a jump start in life.”-- Earl Bates, Intermountain supporter

Violet’s Story -- Rebuilding Relationships at HomeWhen Violet came to Providence Home in the Flathead Valley, her family had exhausted all other options to help her. Violet had violent tantrums at home and struggled to trust her parents. Her adoptive father was her biological mother’s brother, and Violet was constantly fearful that he would abuse her as her mother had in her early years. At first, she resisted closeness from adults at Providence Home and created similarly strained relational dynamics as she experienced at home, fixating on objects to soothe her when she became upset.

Over time, she began taking small chances both with the adults at Providence Home and with her family, giving them opportunities to be in control and demonstrate that they could take care of her and her needs. Through weekly one-on-one visits, Violet is developing a flourishing relationship with her dad. She continues to work hard to improve her relationships with her brothers and practices relying on her parents for support on weekend visits and off-campus outings. As Violet has learned to share her worries with those around her, she has become more flexible in unpredictable situations and is now willing to have close relationships.

Gail Whitney, an Intermountain supporter from Bigfork, answers the question, “Why Intermountain?” this way: “I believe in children. I believe each child has a right to feel and be safe, in both a home and school that provides healthy relationships and guidance. Unfortunately, not every home or school provides this environment, or in some instances, a child can't absorb the care they are given at home so they need a brief time away to re-center themselves. This is why I financially support Intermountain.”

Trent’s Story -- Array of Services Provides Path to HealingBy the time Trent was in kindergarten, he began showing signs of severe emotional distress. He took his clothes off at school and set a car on fire. When it was discovered that he had witnessed sexual behavior and drug use in his home, he was sent to live with relatives.

Through the years, Trent used nearly every service Intermountain offers, from residential treatment to school-based services. The combination of these integrated services helped Trent every step of the way. For example, when he moved from attending Intermountain’s school to attending public school, he eased in by going just half days at first. The mental health specialist at the middle school (who had previously worked on the Intermountain campus) worked closely with the Intermountain school staff to understand Trent’s unique challenges to help him make the transition. Today, Trent is still in school and still lives with his relatives – major victories considering all he’s been through.

Monthly supporters like Nancy Trudell of Helena make possible the integrated care kids like Trent need. Nancy says, “I first heard about Intermountain when my husband and I moved to Helena in 1992. Since that time, I have watched Intermountain grow to become a leader in providing quality integrated services.” Nancy even experienced Intermountain’s high-quality care first-hand: “When one of my grandchildren needed help with a problem at school, Intermountain was there to provide compassionate, professional assistance. The situation was resolved to everyone's satisfaction.”

2016IMPACTREPORT
