INPUT TO TU EINDHOVEN NEXT NATURE STUDENT PROJECT SPRING 2012Etienne Gernez 20120202 – [email protected]
THE VISION: Properties and functions – with the example of Oil spill clean up (property 7)
THE PRODUCTS: 1 meter long Remote Controlled Protei for Leisure applications
THE PRODUCTS: 1 meter long Autonomous for Ocean Sensing and Cleaning as a Swarm
THE VISION: Specific applications to Global needs – Research and Production sites
CONTEXT: Scientific community working towards 1st Atlantic Crossing by an Autonomous Sailboat

THE FRAMEWORK FOR COLLABORATIVE DEVELOPMENT: Open Source Hardware
COLLABORATIVE DEVELOPMENT: DIY Makers Community
Documenting the design and construction
Peer review and design forum
Hands on assignment: Protei 1m RC
• How to make a 1m model that:– is the cheapest to build (<100€ ) with a minimum of
functionality (control of hull shape and sail steering) ? – has the lowest environmental impact from a total life cycle
perspective (birth, life, death, after death): green/bio composites, recycling of sailing/windsurfing equipments…
– can be assembled from a kit by anyone – like an IKEA furniture?– would allow for further upgrading: room for a camera, GPS, and
other sensors– would combine these 4 objectives
• Deliverables: build such a model, or several to interact together!
Conceptual assignment: Protei 1m Autonomous
• What are the necessary functions and components for different missions?– Plastic collection– Oil clean up– Radioactivity mapping– Protected Marine Area Monitoring– Oceanography data collection– Ocean exploration
• How would different version interact with each other? “The Social life of Autonomous Sailing Boats”
• How would a specific version interact with other objects designed for the same goal?– Ex: Protei for oil clean up within a total Oil spill contingency plan– Ex: launching and retrieving of a swarm of Proteis from a mothership
• Deliverables: interactive maps, 3D animations, posters, simulations, AI algorithms
PROTEI COMMUNITY AKA THE PROTEANS – A MULTINATIONAL COMPANY OF VOLUNTEERS
https://sites.google.com/a/opensailing.net/protei/people
Client expectations
• Innovate & collaborate• High degree of independence• Always work within the Open Hardware
framework: thorough documentation, sharing and crediting of Protei.org on any piece of intellectual or material property produced during the student project
Communication with Client
• Weekly Skype meeting with Academic coordinator Etienne Gernez, on fridays
• >> please elect 1 or 2 contact persons from the student group to report on progress
• Access to Protei community of developers (interaction designers, industrial designers, visual artists) for specific questions, depending on availability, routed by Academic coordinator
• Physical meeting with a few Proteans at the middle and end of semester exhibitions in Eindhoven
Student expectations ?
• What would you like to learn during this project?
• What would you like to do with this experience in the future?
Steering Committee & Coaching• Sam Nemeth• Emilia Barakova• Koert van Mesvoort• Missing: Naval architecture advisor
– >> TU Delft: for example Peter Naaijen– >> MARIN: for example ing. Rien de Meij [email protected]– both have been in contact with Protei in the recent past – no formal agreement
for close assistance discussed though– when TU Delft and Marin meet:
http://www.marin.nl/web/News/News-items/Delft-University-of-Technology-designs-fastest-model-sailing-boat-at-MARIN.htm
– >> organize a meeting with the TU Delft students who designed these amazing sailing boats?
