Did you know?Paddington is said to take its name from ‘Padda’, a Saxonwho lived in the area. When connected with ‘Tun’, an oldEnglish word for settlement or town, the result became the modern word ‘Paddington’.

Sheldon SquareLondon, W2 6PYt: 020 7266 7445Named after Sir Joseph Sheldon and hisbrother Daniel, nephews of the Bishop ofLondon, who became tenants and built anew church in 1679, the predecessor ofSt Mary's Church in Paddington. SheldonSquare is a magnificent amphitheatre,designed by architects Sidell Gibson,where you can sit in the sunshine enjoying a salad or a sandwich. Part of the PaddingtonCentral scheme, live musicis provided over the summer months.

A ten minute walk will take you tothe heart of Hyde Park, a Royal Park since 1536 when Henry VIIIacquired the land. Take a strollaround the famous Serpentine lakeand you will reach the adjoiningKensington Gardens, home to thestunning Italian Fountain Gardensand the Albert Memorial. Otherhighlights include the SerpentineGallery, Kensington Palace and the Peter Pan Statue. In recentyears visitors have also flocked to the gardens to visit the Diana,Princess of Wales MemorialFountain, playground and sevenmile memorial walk.

A five minute walk along the canaland you’re in Little Venice, an oasisof leafy calm where the GrandUnion Canal meets the Regent’sCanal. Originally given its name byRobert Browning, Little Venice isnow home to the delightfulWaterside Café, and the excellentWarwick Castle pub, as well asattractions such as the PuppetTheatre Barge, the CascadeFloating Art Gallery and stunningItalianate architecture. It’s also agreat starting point for a walk alongthe towpath. Head east and you willfind yourself at Camden Lock,home of the famous Camdenmarket and a stone’s throw fromRegent’s Park and London Zoo.

From Paddington’s Bakerloo LineStation you can be at WaterlooStation within 15 minutes, home ofthe London Eye. The world’slargest observation wheel, the Eyestands 135 metres high and willtake you on a 30-minute ‘flight’ overLondon. From here, take a short walk eastalong the river to the impressiveTate Modern, or Shakespeare’shistoric Globe Theatre.

A quick trip on the Circle Line fromPaddington and you will be in SouthKensington, home to some of thebest museums in London includingthe Natural History Museum andthe Science Museum. Children andadults alike will enjoy the interactivedisplays with push-button gadgets,live science experiments and IMAX3D cinema. Don’t miss the NaturalHistory Museum’s dinosaurcollection and enormous life-sizemodel of a blue whale. Also close byis the world class art and designcollection in the stunning Victoriaand Albert Museum.

One stop further on the Circle Linewill take you to Harrods, one of theworld’s most famous departmentstores. Established as a humblegrocery store in 1849, Harrods hasgrown to encompass 20 in-storerestaurants offering everyimaginable cuisine as well asdepartments selling everythingfrom food to footwear, furniture tofashion. Must-see sights include theFood Halls and the extraordinaryPet Department.

Make the most ofPaddington’s excellent raillinks to the west and Walesby taking a day-trip to one ofthese top destinations. Withjourney times of around twohours or less, you can enjoya full day of exploring and stillmake it back to Paddingtonin time for dinner.

WindsorJust 20 minutes from Paddington ishistoric Windsor, home to one of theQueen’s residences. Visit the famousWindsor Castle built by William theConqueror and soak up the splendidinteriors strewn with great works ofart, or take a ride in a horse drawncarriage or an open top bus andenjoy the 17th century architectureand cobbled streets off Castle Hill.Alternatively splash out in the greatmix of famous stores and smallindependent shops or takeadvantage of the wonderfulselection of restaurants and cafés.

OxfordAround an hour from Paddington isOxford, one of England’s mostfamous University towns. The sheerbeauty of Oxford’s colleges andriverside setting alone make it agreat destination for a day-trip, notto mention the museums, literarylinks, film and TV locations,shopping, music and theatre. Enjoycandlelit evensong at a collegechapel, watch a Shakespeare play inthe park, or hire a punt and take tothe water and then make the mostof Oxford’s lively mix of restaurants,cafés, pubs and bars which give thishistoric city its cosmopolitan buzz.

BathAn hour and a half west of Londonlies Bath, a diverse city combininghoney-coloured Georgian crescents,terraces and squares with healingwaters bubbling from natural hotsprings under Roman Baths. Youcan take a dip at the new state-of-the-art Thermae Bath Spa Complexor enjoy a more historic afternoonsipping tea in the 18th century PumpRoom next to Bath Abbey whereEdgar, England’s first king wascrowned back in 937AD. Alternatively,visit the Pulteney Bridge, lined with250 year old shops, and the nearbyriverside gardens.

BristolAlso around an hour and a half fromPaddington is Bristol, best known forits naval heritage but increasinglypopular for its vibrant nightlife andtop class shopping. Step back intime with the city’s excellent rangeof museums and galleries, as wellas Brunel’s SS Great Britain andJohn Cabot’s ship, the Matthew, twoexamples of Bristol’s wonderfullypreserved living history. In theevening head down to the newlydeveloped waterfront for a host ofrestaurants, bars and clubs or takeadvantage of the city’s thrivingtheatre scene.

Valleys of South WalesYou may have a picture in your mind of the Valleys but it probablyneeds an update. A visit to theValleys of today will spring somesurprises. For a start you won’t see any coal mines unless they areheritage sites. What you will see are lakes and woodlands and aroller coaster landscape of hillsdotted with friendly towns andvillages. These hills are made forwalking, cycling and exploring, youjust don’t know what you’ll comeacross, from medieval castles andchurches to World Heritage Sites.You may even spot the Tardis or analien, as South Wales is the home ofDr Who and Torchwood.
