POLICY FRAMEWORKDMRC being a responsible organization, concernfor environment is manifested in Mission and Culturestatement, which inter-alia states:-Mission:• To make Delhi Metro self-sustainableCulture:• During construction we should neither

inconvenience nor endanger public life nor shouldour work lead to ecological or environmentaldegradation.

• To cut waste relentlessly.

DMRC’s SOLAR INITIATIVE• DMRC has a Policy on use of Solar Energy.• Aiming to achieve:

• 20 MW by 2017

• 50 MW by 2021

• Already commissioned 3 MW Solar Power PlantsAs of now, DMRC consumes 150 MW

Installation of Roof Top Solar Power Plants

INITIATIVE - WATER CONSERVATION• Operating Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) and

Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) in depots &colonies resulting in reuse of water forhorticulture and flushing of toilets.

• Seepage water from underground stations usedthus reducing ground water extraction.

• Rain water recharged into ground by Rain WaterHarvesting (RWH) pits.

CONSERVATION OF ECOLOGY

Tree plantation by DMRC has potential capacity tosequester approximately 5,500 t of CO2 and produce12,400 t of O2 per year.

BUILT ENVIRONMENT - GREEN METRO• Introduced Green MRTS Rating

System for Metro Systems as ourbuildings are peculiar in nature.

• Phase-lll Stations & Receiving Sub-Stations are built as greenbuildings.

• Colonies and Hostels are alsodesigned as green buildings.

• Benefits of Green Stations:– 30-35% energy saving– 50% reduction in Lighting Power

Density (LPD).– 10-15% improvement in

efficiency of HVAC equipmentover min. energy efficiencyrequirements of ASHRAE orECBC, India.

BUILT ENVIRONMENT - GREEN METRO• Indian Green Building Council

(IGBC) has developed greenstandards for accreditation ofMetro Stations to Green Building.

• Received the highest category ofcertification viz. ‘Platinum’ for itsrecently inaugurated 12 stations inJune and September 2015.

• Signed an MoU with U.S. GreenBuilding Council (USGBC) fordeveloping a new MRTS ratingsystem for existing andupcoming stations.

• DMRC, along with USGBC will alsocertify other existing metros globallyto this new accreditation.

UN - CERTIFICATIONS

Delhi Metro has been certified by the UN, as the first

metro rail-based system in the world to get carbon

credits for contributing in reducing pollution levels in

the city, 1.11 Million CERs from Modal Shift project

and 0.22 Million CERs from Regenerative Braking

project so far.

GHG EMISSION REDUCTION1. CLEAN DEVELOPMENT MECHANISM (CDM): DMRC has earned 1.33 Millions CERs/VERs from two

CDM projects till date. Registered DMRC’s 3rd UNFCCC CDM project (MRTS

PoA) which will pave the way for other metros todemonstrate CO2 reduction.

UNFCCC – United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
