Chinese Entrepreneur Shares Secrets of Success

Leading the 40-fold growth of a business in a period of twenty years merits attention in any country. Accomplishing that growth in the challenging Chinese market as it transformed from a state-owned economy is simply an amazing story. Yisheng Livestock and Poultry Breeding Co. Ltd., led by Chairman Jisheng Cao, also has an even more impressive chapter is its history. In 2010, Yisheng was the first poultry breeding company in China to transfer to public ownership, with a USD$40 million initial public offering. Less than 3000 public companies exist in China and there are only three others in the poultry industry, all in broiler production.

Mr. Cao, who founded Yisheng in 1989 along with two partners, willingly shares the secrets of his company’s success. He says, “Do the right thing, the right way. Stay focused on your business. Know what you are doing and keep doing it over and over”. Recognizing that the poultry industry was positioned for fast growth, Mr. Cao saw an excellent opportunity to produce parent stock for both broilers and layers. Based on his education in animal husbandry and the veterinary degrees of his partners, the company had the foundation to be poised for growth.

Today Yisheng enjoys over 34% of the Chinese broiler parent market of almost 1 million grandparents and almost 20% of the Chinese layer parent market of almost 400,000 grandparents. New breeding projects include introducing international genetics for dairy cattle and pigs, as well as building a new model farm for chicken grandparents to help satisfy the growing demand for Yisheng quality parent stock.

When asked why the Hy-Line Brown is the largest selling layer in China, Mr. Cao lists several reasons. “First, Chinese prefer brown eggs as they feel the color is lucky. The Hy-Line brown hens sell well at the end of the production cycle due to her good body size. Her temperament is very good – she’s calm and not aggressive. We have seen the importance of her disease resistance in China as the Hy-Line Brown has excellent livability. And the Hy-Line Brown egg size is right for the market demands.” Mr. Cao also mentioned that the egg industry currently includes many small farms where feed efficiency is not accurately measured, but that is an important characteristic for customers with large farms. Shell quality is also important for those large farms who also track seconds and cracks.

There is no time for Mr. Cao to relax and reflect on his success. Actually he feels greater responsibility to the additional shareholders as he is now leading a public company. He says, “the only choice is to make more money. We can’t lose money!”
