DESCRIPTION

A key differentiator in, what we call, the emerging "synthesis economy" over the next decade+ will be the ability of an organization to synthesize knowledge into: actionable insights, valuable cutting-edge products, and outstanding services. Nowhere is this more true than with companies in the telecommunications eco-system, since communications and networking are, today, a key engine of economic growth. To do so, however, companies will need to recognize, nurture, efficiently manage, grow, and develop their, hitherto intangible, intellectual assets, by recognizing and rewarding innovation and design thinking. Such a philosophy will need to form the bedrock of their R&D inventiveness, and will impact all aspects of their R&D process - from efficency to system engineering to life-cycle management to architecture & design, and testing. We will illustrate examples where doing this has been instrumental to the success of companies, and why this is recognized as key to future market leadership. This discussion of best-practices will, we believe, help contribute to the planning process and vision at telecom companies.

What the Synthesis Economy is About …

Ideas/Innovations coming from the fusion of insights

Insights come from a multitude of intellectual assets

Intellectual asset management (IAM) – is a critical component

of how an organization is structured & managed

Objective of IAM:

Get to synthesis of insights – quickly, effectively, efficiently

Capitalize on them in a meaningful way

Telecommunications & the World Economy (1)

Global telecom industry: a vital sector of the world economy

Connects businesses worldwide, processes business info.

6.9B mobile subs, 2.7B Internet users, 750M connected households

IP/MPLS/Ethernet VPN revenues US$62.6B in 2013 (Infonetics)

Constitutes 5% of global GDP

Annual revenues estimated between US$ 2.4-3 Trillion

Takes 4% of power, emits 2% of CO2 globally

Fastest growing sector in many nations worldwide

What is Intellectual Asset Management?

IAM - Systematic creation, organization, and prioritization of

intellectual assets to extract value from them

Intellectual capital – sum total of the intellectual property (IP)

held by a company plus its people

IP – patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets,

technology, designs, publications, …

IAM is all about managing innovation, and is a key determinant

of an organization’s success

Guiding Principles of IAM

Follow the Intelligence: create patents, inventions in that

space

Design processes & systems for open collaboration and the

consumption economy

Wrapping it Up

IAM is about a strategy for managing innovation to realize

perpetual growth and sustained leadership

Requires adjusting to new realities of open collaboration,

and synthesizing insights to produce new ideas

Needs focus on strategic innovation, and redirecting (at least

some) research to lateral opportunities

Methodology and principles introduced here provide a start

in that direction
