The Short Summary Of Computer

Historyy The first use of µcomputer µ was recorded in 1613,

referring to a person who carried out calculations or

computations, and the word continued to be used inthat sense until the middle of the 20th century.

y From the end of the 19 th century onwards though,

the word began to take on its more familiar meaning,

describing a machine that carries out computations.

y Professor John Atanasoff and graduate student

Clifford Berry built theworld's first electronic-digital computer ABC atIowa State Universitybetween 1939 and 1942.

y The machine was notprogrammable, beingdesigned only to solvesystems of linear equations.

John W. Mauchly made

ENIAC 1ENIAC 1(ElectronicNumerical Integrator And

Computer) Computer.

y The American military

sponsored their research;

the army needed acomputer with more

speed so they used

20,000 vaccuum tubes.

y The Manchester Small-Scale Experimental Machine (SSEM),

nicknamed Baby, was theworld's first stored-program computer.

y It was built at the VictoriaUniversity of Manchester by Frederic C. Williams,Tom Kilburn and Geoff Tootill, and ran its firstprogram on 21 June 1948.

y MICR technology was

first demonstrated to the

 American Bankers Association in July

1956, and by 1963 it

was almost universally

employed.

y It is the first bank

industry specific

computer.

y It was made in 1971 byFaggin, Hoff and Mazor

y

It was the first completeCPU on one chip, and alsothe first commerciallyavailable microprocessor.

y Such feature of integrationwas made possible by the

use of then new silicon gatetechnology allowing a higher number of transistors and afaster speed than waspossible before.
