Virginia Tech Foundation Inc.

The Virginia Tech Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, non-stock corporation established in 1948. It provides private financial support to enable the forward progress of Virginia Tech. Through successful asset management and the generosity of Virginia Tech alumni and friends, the foundation continues to increase its real estate portfolio, endowment value, and support to university initiatives.

The foundation’s real estate portfolio includes properties across the Commonwealth of Virginia as well as Switzerland. These properties range from ones focused on innovation and economic development, such as the Corporate Research Center and the Virginia Tech Research Center – Arlington; to ones focused on academics, which include the Steger Center for International Scholarship and the Reynolds Homestead; to ones in the travel or recreation business, such as the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech and the Hotel Roanoke. This diverse portfolio provides program facilities and generates private resources to enable Virginia Tech to invent the future.

8Virginia Tech Foundation Annual Report

An extensive role in economic developmentA message from Ben J. Davenport Jr., Chairman of the Virginia Tech Foundation Board

Architecturally, the Tudor-revival Hotel Roanoke, which dates back to 1892, and the Tech Center Oyster Point—a contemporary office, residential, and retail complex under construction in Newport News—have little in common.

But from the standpoint of their missions, they are very similar. Beyond their aims of turning a profit, they are major economic assets for their regions. Another similarity is that the Virginia Tech Foundation’s extensive involvement in both facilities illustrates the expansive role of the commonwealth’s major land grant university.

Universities are primarily known for educating students and conducting research. Virginia Tech goes far beyond that. It operates facilities throughout the commonwealth, and beyond, as part of its mission not only to advance knowledge, but to foster economic competitiveness and improved quality of life.

At the Virginia Tech Foundation, we help make this possible. One reason I enjoy chairing the foundation board so much is that I have seen the positive effect of the university’s emphasis on economic development in my home region of SouthernVirginia.

The university’s Institute for Advanced Learning and Research makes a great difference to the economic viability of Danville and surrounding communities.

Ben J. Davenport Jr., Timothy Sands, and John E. Dooley at the Hotel Roanoke.

I take great satisfaction in seeing how Virginia Tech’s initiatives also benefit other communities. I’m excited that these efforts expanded to Newport News during the fiscal year covered by this report.

Both the Hotel Roanoke and Tech Center Oyster Point feature prominently in the main narrative of this annual report, which is devoted to providing examples of how the foundation promotes economic development, innovation, and educational excellence—all of which are pillars of the Virginia Tech mission.

As an alumnus, I’m proud of all of Virginia Tech’s many achievements. But as a Virginia businessman, I’m particularly enthusiastic

about those achievements that benefit not just the university community, but communities like Danville, Roanoke, and Newport News.

I was pleased at the degree to which Charles W. Steger embraced Virginia Tech’s broad role within the commonwealth while serving as university president, and I look forward to working with President Timothy Sands on similarly far-reaching projects in the years to come.

Based on my conversations with President Sands so far, and his public remarks that have reiterated the importance of our land-grant mission, I am confident that being a major contributor to the commonwealth’s economy will remain an important part of the mission of Virginia Tech—and its foundation.

An engine for innovation and entrepreneurshipA message from John E. Dooley, CEO and Secretary-Treasurer

As I enter our office building each morning, I get a heartwarming reminder of just how effective our university and its foundation can be in promoting innovation and entrepreneurship.

Directly down the hall from the door that my colleagues and I open to enter our building is the office of Heyo, a young company that helps small businesses take advantage of social media. Founded by a former Virginia Tech student, Nathan Latka, it has customers in more than 160 countries and has grown to employ 25 people.Sharing a building with Heyo is a great pleasure. It illustrates the difference that an institutional investor, such as the Virginia Tech Foundation, can make in its community.

Our foundation doesn’t just share an office with Heyo. We are one of its major backers. By providing it capital, we helped make it possible for this promising company to remain in Blacksburg, which is good for both the region and the commonwealth.

Our investment in Heyo comes from a fund called Valleys’ Ventures, which we established in January 2013. This investment vehicle is one of several recent initiatives—all highlighted in this report—that are making the New River Valley an ever stronger environment for business creation and innovation.

Along with the arrival of Valleys’ Ventures, the fiscal year saw the opening of NuSpark, which provides free space for people to develop promising ideas, and the debut of Innovate, a student residential community

that encourages entrepreneurial thinking. The year also saw major developments within our Corporate Research Center, which plays an essential role in the business-friendly environment for which our region is becoming ever more widely known.

Together, these developments represent a convergence of initiatives that provide support to entrepreneurs at all stages of the business creation and development process.Innovation and entrepreneurship are exciting and essential, but they are not without risk. Fortunately, our foundation is on solid financial footing, which allows us to explore investments such as Valleys’ Ventures.

While our financial picture is outlined in great detail later in this report, I do wish to mention two facts here: We saw a 19.4 percent return on our endowed investments, and the market value of all endowments we hold totaled $796.4 million as of June 30, the highest level ever.

Due to our generally conservative and widely successful efforts at investment, we are more able to take on those risks that come with backing new ventures. And along with the potential for risk, such ventures also bring the potential for incredible rewards, financial and otherwise.

Valleys’ Ventures is not our first venture capital fund. That distinction goes to NewVA Capital Parners, which started in 2004 and will end in December 2014. Along with supporting several new companies, including one that went public in August 2013, that fund had returned a 21.6 percent annualized rate of return between inception and Dec. 31, 2013.

Hopefully, Valleys’ Ventures will have similar performance. But even if it does not, it will play a valuable role in our efforts to develop, retain, and nurture the talented entrepreneurs that are being developed at Virginia Tech.

With the 2014 Miss Virginia Pageant, the Norfolk & Western Historical Society Convention, and a meeting of Commonwealth Coal Corporation all underway the same day, it was no surprise that all rooms at the Hotel Roanoke were sold out on June 27.

Nonetheless, it was particularly appropriate that the last weekday of the fiscal year was so busy at the hotel, because it came at the end of an especially successful year for the facility.

Occupancy reached 82.4 percent. Revenue was up $1 million on the previous fiscal year. The hotel increased its market share by 4 percent, and it won both a PRIDE Award and a Connie Award from the DoubleTree by Hilton brand, in recognition of the superior customer service provided at the facility.

The thriving scene at the hotel that summer Friday was in dramatic contrast to where the property stood a quarter century ago, when the Norfolk Southern railroad company transferred ownership to the Virginia Tech Foundation. The hope then was that a new owner could revive the historic property, which dated back to 1892 and had fallen on hard times. Following a major renovation, the foundation reopened the hotel

in 1995, and it has made numerous improvements since then.

“I used to stay before it was closed, because it had a lot of charm as an old hotel,” Roy Allison, of Richmond, Virginia, said moments after checking out of the facility on June 27. “But it’s had even more charm since being fixed up by Virginia Tech.”

Roanoke City Manager Chris Morrill said the foundation’s hotel investment not only renewed a historic building, but “was a major catalyst to the revitalization of downtown Roanoke.”

Although the hotel is located nearly 40 miles from the foundation’s main offices in Blacksburg, reviving it was in keeping with the foundation’s charge to support the many facets of Virginia Tech’s land-grant university mission.

That mission includes being a major economic driver for the commonwealth, promoting innovation, and providing an extraordinary environment for education.

The banner year posted by the Hotel Roanoke is one example of the foundation’s effectiveness at extending Virginia Tech’s positive impact in 2013-2014. There are many others.

apps division, which had been located elsewhere in Blacksburg, moved into 31,435 square feet of customized space in a new CRC building on Innovation Drive.

“The CRC provided a seamless experience for our new software development center, beginning with the design, based on features of our San Antonio headquarters, through construction and final occupancy,” said Doug Juanarena, a Rackspace vice president who heads its Blacksburg operations. “Their lease provides enormous flexibility, taking the real estate risk out of a growing technology business.”

Along with adding new buildings and tenants, the CRC finished construction of an outdoor pavilion on Innovation Drive, part of a larger project intended to provide more recreational space and opportunities for employees to congregate and collaborate.

Overall, the CRC’s model of luring companies and jobs to Blacksburg has proven such a success over the years

An entrepreneurial ecosystem

When the personal finance website NerdWallet.com ranked Blacksburg as one of the fastest-growing places in Virginia in 2014, one of the factors it cited was new jobs being created within the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center.

During fiscal 2013-2014 the CRC, a for-profit subsidiary of the Virginia Tech Foundation, added 11 new tenants. This increased the number of firms or research centers located in the CRC to more than 160. Combined, they employ more than 2,700 people.

Among the companies in the CRC is Rackspace, a global leader in cloud hosting, which made Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list in 2014. Headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, Rackspace operates data centers on four continents. In March, its email and

that efforts to replicate it in Virginia’s Tidewater region are underway, facilitated through an agreement between the foundation, W.M. Jordan Company, and S.J. Collins Enterprises.

“The Tech Center Oyster Point is an opportunity to deploy our model elsewhere,” CRC President Joe Meredith said of the new development being built near the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, in Newport News.

The foundation’s role in the project is as property manager. Plans for the project call for 1.3 million square feet of research and office space, 300,000 square feet of multifamily residential space, and 250,000 square feet of retail space. The first building is expected to be completed in June 2015.

Retaining the region’s talent

Nathan Latka attended Virginia Tech. He still considers several of its administrators to be mentors. He views the university’s computer science program as a valuable pipeline of potential software engineers for his growing firm, Heyo, which helps small businesses with social media initiatives. Nonetheless, as his customer base grew, Latka considered relocating to a region where venture capital is more widely available.

Fortunately, he didn’t have to leave.

“There would have been 25 less jobs in Blacksburg, and no Heyo here, if not for Valleys’ Ventures” Latka said, referring to a recently launched investment fund that is a partnership between the Virginia Tech Foundation, Carilion Clinic, and

Third Security. “We are competing with multibillion dollar technology companies in Silicon Valley and Boston and New York, and one of the reasons those regions attract tech startups is that capital is readily available.”

Started in January 2013, Valleys’ Ventures

is the second fund of its type that the three parties have set up to support promising companies within a 100-mile radius of the university. The first, NewVA Capital Partners, was launched in 2004 and as of Dec. 31, 2013, had posted a 21.6 percent annualized rate of return. That particularly strong performance has largely been due to the success of a biotechnology firm, Intrexon, which went public in August 2013. For much of its existence, Intrexon was headquartered in the CRC, though its main offices now are in Maryland.

The NewVA Capital Partners fund is scheduled to expire in December 2014. Ten-year windows are common for such funds and, to a large degree, Valleys’ Ventures is taking up where NewVA will have left off in terms of providing access to institutional capital for some of the region’s most promising startups. Valleys’ Ventures was established with $15 million—$5 million from each partner.

“The Valleys’ Ventures investment is critical to our growth,” said Bob Summers, founder of Fitnet, the second company the fund had invested in as of the close of fiscal 2013-2014.

His company, which is located in Blacksburg and employs eight people, began after Summers won a national software contest with his vision of an app that connects physical therapists or personal trainers with their clients. The app debuted on New Year’s Day, 2014, and has been used by people in more than 180 countries, said Summers, who earned his bachelor’s in computer engineering from Virginia Tech in 1998 and has a master’s degree from MIT.

Like Latka, he speculated that without the support of Valleys’ Ventures his company “very likely would have had to move” elsewhere in search of investment.

NuSpark launched in February as a free incubator for early-stage startups.

A “Nu” way to support innovation

When the makers of the Occulus Rift virtual reality headset released a kit for app developers not long ago, Hayden Lee had several promising ideas for software programs to allow people to use the headsets in new and valuable ways. What he didn’t have, until recently, was an appropriate place to demonstrate his ideas to potential collaborators or investors. That changed when his company, Convrge, was accepted for keycard access to NuSpark, a space within North End, a Virginia Tech Foundation-owned multipurpose complex in Blacksburg.

“We’re excited about working in there,” said Lee, who expects to earn his bachelor’s in computer science from Virginia Tech in December 2014, and has two partners in his company. “You have to have special hardware to use our system, and we want to be in a place where we can collaborate with other people, show off what we’re doing, and get real-time feedback.”

Helping entrepreneurs like Lee to make connections and have a home base for their early-stage ventures is exactly what NuSpark was created to do, said its director, Sherry Walker, whose facility opened in February 2014.

NuSpark has regular hours during which anyone over the age of 18 can come in to work on ideas with

commercial promise or potential social benefits, but a handful of teams can apply for 24/7 access, which is what Lee did.

David Henry also applied for and received unlimited access. He said NuSpark’s space has made it much more feasible for him and his partners to run Card Isle Corporation, which makes kiosks that allow customers to print out customized greeting cards.

“Prior to that, we didn’t have a dedicated space in which we could work,” said Henry, who earned his master’s in industrial systems engineering in May 2014. One of his partners is working toward a Ph.D. in that subject, and the other earned his bachelor’s in mechanical engineering in 2013.

“Making it possible for students to start businesses, and encouraging them to stay in the area to develop them after graduation, are among NuSpark’s major goals,” Walker said.

“We’d love for them to stay in the region, and hopefully, we’ll graduate them into VT KnowledgeWorks, which is a business accelerator, or they’ll get space in the CRC, elsewhere in Blacksburg, or in the region,” she said. “Down the road, if they’re paying office rent someplace and hiring people, then that’s always good economic development.”

Advancing educational achievements

If you wanted to get a sense of the many different ways the Virginia Tech Foundation helps the university provide a world-class education, reading Timothy Duffy’s impressive résumé would be a good place to start.

Duffy, who is now a senior majoring in finance and accounting, led a student investment team; participated in a study abroad program based in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland; and was a residential learning community president. He received multiple scholarships, which freed up his time to participate in all those activities, along with many others, while staying on pace to complete his bachelor’s in finance and accounting in December 2014.

“I think the donors are sort of the unsung heroes behind all of these experiences that I’ve had,” Duffy said, referring to contributors to Virginia Tech, whose gifts toward scholarships and programs are managed by the foundation. “There’s such a strong outpouring of support from people who care about Virginia Tech, which helps

make a lot of the opportunities that we have possible.”

Each highlight from Duffy’s resume listed earlier illustrates his point, because the foundation, and the donors who provide much of its funding, helped to make possible all those kinds of programs in fiscal 2013-2014.

Student investing teams

The foundation’s role in supporting student investing training expanded in fiscal 2012-2013, when a team focused on commodities was added. For the 2013-2014 fiscal year that team, known as COINs, posted a 7.2 percent return on its investments. The team, whose name is short for Commodities Investing by Students, was allocated $500,000. COINs is believed to be the first student investing team of its type in the nation.

As is the case with the university’s other student investing teams—SEED, which runs a $5 million equity portfolio, and BASIS, which manages $5 million in fixed-income securities—COINs gives its participants true, hands-on experience making investment decisions that matter.

“We function similarly to a real company with regard to organization, training, transaction methods, and reporting,” said COINs participant Andrew Harris, a senior from Vienna, Virginia, who is majoring in finance and accounting.

For fiscal 2013-2014 SEED, which stands for Student-managed Endowment for Educational Development, posted a 23.4 percent return, while BASIS, which stands for Bond and Securities Investing by Students—and is the program in which Duffy participated—had a return of 3.8 percent.

Global opportunities

Like many Virginia Tech students who study internationally, Duffy took advantage of the university’s main

campus abroad, which in June 2014 was renamed the Steger Center for International Scholarship in honor of former Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger.

The renaming was announced at a special ceremony to celebrate the completion of a major renovation and expansion of the foundation-owned facility. Initiated in 2012, and made possible by donations, the project added 6,200 square feet of new space, increasing the center’s size to nearly 25,500 square feet. In addition, extensive improvements were made to 5,200 square feet of existing space.

While the primary motivation for the renovation and expansion was to benefit the students who study there, the improvements will allow the center to open its doors to professional workshops, conferences, and meetings, which is expected to encourage even greater international engagement and to strengthen the university’s presence across Europe.

The Innovate living/learning community provides opportunities

for student entrepreneurs.

Combining living and learning

Duffy said the chance to participate in the university’s Honors Residential College, where he served as president for the 300-student community, was tremendously valuable.

“Being around a group of people who are invested in each other, dedicated to the success of one another, curious about each other’s lives, and interested in both helping and learning from each other definitely highlighted the experience of being in college,” he said.

In fall 2013, the university added a new living/learning community, called Innovate, which is focused on entrepreneurship. Innovate is located in a building constructed, with help from donor funding, in the Oak Lane community on campus.

The 35-member Innovate community was created to help foster an entrepreneurial mindset in students, from a variety of majors, as early as possible in their college careers, said Assistant Professor of Management Marc Junkunc, faculty advisor to the program.

“We’re planting a seed for them to gain the confidence, and the network, to start a business when they’re ready,” he said.

Michael Vitak, a sophomore majoring in marketing, described his freshman experience in the program, which

included a course that was taught in the house, as “very eye-opening and beneficial.”

Expanded internship opportunities

When Matt Ebert finishes his master’s in educational leadership and policy studies and starts applying for higher-education- administration posts, he will be likely to cite his experiences doing content analysis of the Virginia Tech Foundation website and conducting a market survey of potential customers for the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech.

“Doing a content analysis is a transferable skill for any position I’ll have from here on out,” he said. “And I’m not an avid golfer by any means, but doing a baseline survey of potential golf customers that will inform VTF’s practices is also a type of skill that is going to be instrumental for me to use.”

While the foundation has given undergraduate students opportunities to intern for years, fiscal 2013-2014 marked the first time it has done so for graduate students like Ebert.

Ebert was one of two students who fulfilled their practicum requirements by working for the foundation. The other, Joe Edens, said he jumped at the chance because even though his main interests lie in student affairs, he was “very interested in understanding how a foundation works within a university.”

Similar desires to get practical experience

Graduate students Joe Edens and Matt Ebert interned with the Virginia Tech Foundation.

led multiple undergraduates to intern with the foundation as well, including Katelyn Schocklin, a senior double majoring in accounting and finance, who is minoring in psychology.

“I was surprised by just how much of my learning is really called upon in the workplace and think it’s actually helped my education being able to see that,” she said. “Now, when I take tests I can reference having seen the material put into action at the foundation.”

As the multiple stories from fiscal 2013-2014 detailed here illustrate, the foundation fulfills its mission in many ways. This includes advancing the region’s economy by running the Hotel Roanoke, CRC, and NuSpark; providing venture capital that keeps entrepreneurial talent in the region; and supporting Virginia Tech educational initiatives that are developing the professional talent that any region would be fortunate to have.

The Virginia Tech Foundation makes a positive impact locally, regionally, and globally by leveraging its assets to advance the university’s land grant values—discovery, learning, and outreach. Established in 1948, the foundation, through successful asset management and the generosity of the alumni and friends of Virginia Tech, continues to expand its real estate portfolio, increase its endowment value, and grow its support for university initiatives that engage and encourage student and faculty development.

The foundation’s real estate portfolio includes properties ranging from innovational to academic to recreational. It supports initiatives targeting economic growth, technological advancement, and business creation. The foundation also provides special funding for projects that enhance university academics and offer students real-world experiences that translate into future career success. Foundation accomplishments and initiatives are critical components in Virginia Tech’s commitment to invent the future.

The popularity of the Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech for daily play, special events, and conference/social events continued to expand, and the course continued to be recognized for excellence. Golf Week magazine rated it as the fifth best course in Virginia and The Roanoke Times declared it Best Course in the New River Valley. The number of rounds played increased to 17,293, driven by the doubling of special-event play and a 13 percent increase in play by Virginia Tech faculty, staff, and students. In all, 62 events

were held, ranging in size from 24 to 160 players. The course hosted 24 wedding or wedding-related events. A five-year plan was created for beautifying the clubhouse and other non-golf areas. Course conditioning focused on options for care and treatment during periods of high stress. The use of special varieties of zoysia and Bermuda grasses to supplement the bent-grass on some tees and difficult areas was tested with the assistance of Virginia Tech Professor of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences Mike Goatley.

The Corporate Research Center opened two new buildings in Blacksburg and expanded its outreach to include the Tech Center Oyster Point project in Newport News. Tech Center is expected to eventually include 14 research buildings that, combined, will provide more than 1.3 million square feet of research space. More than 2,700 people were employed within the CRC’s 31 buildings in Blacksburg, which, combined, provide more than 1 million square feet of space. Fiscal 2013-2014 saw multiple tenants honored. VirtualU was one of five startups chosen to be featured at Bloomberg’s Next Big Thing Summit. Mail Pilot by Mindsense was featured as a Best New App by Apple. Advanced Logic

Industries received the 2013 Virginia Excellence Award. Venveo won a silver award in the digital advertising apps category at the National American Advertising (ADDY) Awards. Rackspace placed 29th among Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For. Joe Meredith, president of the CRC, was inducted into Virginia Tech’s Academy of Engineering Excellence, a distinction for alumni of the university’s College of Engineering who have made sustained and meritorious contributions in engineering and/or leadership. More than 160 private, high-technology companies or research centers have been located in the CRC, which celebrated its 26th year of growing businesses that matter.

During fiscal 2013-2014, the foundation’s real estate office negotiated five retail leases for the portion of North End that opened the previous fiscal year. Combined, the leases fill over 22,000 square feet and will generate more than $5.1 million in lease revenue over the next 10 years. The tenants are Velocity Care/Carilion Clinic, Carilion Sports Medicine, the artist P. Buckley Moss, Starbucks, and Hokie Centric, which is owned and operated by Virginia Tech Services. Meanwhile, the foundation developed a plan to update the section of North End that was

formerly known as Collegiate Square, including new signage and renovations to exterior common areas. The popular restaurant chain Five Guys opened in North End in February 2014, and construction was underway for locations for Palm Beach Tan and Wicked Taco, with fall 2014 openings targeted. These new leases in North End will generate nearly $2.4 million in lease revenue, combined, over the next 10 years. Once the new arrivals all are open, North End retail occupancy will have increased to more than 82 percent.

Cellular service on campus and in Lane Stadium is improving dramatically, thanks to a distributed antenna system built and operated by the foundation. The improved access offers convenient connectivity for students, faculty, staff, and visitors, and enhances public safety and security. Phase one of the project was completed in June 2014, with the installation of fiber, system equipment, and antennas, as well as the construction of a structure on the east side of

the stadium. The structure serves as the system’s head end and base station shelter. Thanks to the new system, coverage has improved in the stadium, as well as in the parking lots on the northeast, south, and west sides of the stadium. Verizon Wireless is the initial carrier, but the system is designed to accommodate multiple providers. Phase two, which is expected to be completed by November 2014, will improve coverage in multiple residence halls.

Consolidated endowment performance

As of June 30, 2014, the market value of all endowments held by the Virginia Tech Foundation, Inc. totaled $796.4 million. Of that total, $753.6 million is invested in the Foundation’s pooled consolidated endowment fund, while $42.8 million is held separately in notes, deeds of trust, gift annuities, contributions receivable, real estate partnerships, and other miscellaneous endowed assets.

The June 30 allocation exposures of the Foundation’s pooled endowment fund consisted of 49.8 percent global equities, 13.1 percent real assets, 33.4 percent fixed income, and 3.7 percent cash. The fund achieved a total return of 19.4 percent for the year ending June 30 and an annualized return of 12.6 percent over the trailing five-year period.

The overriding principle of the Foundation’s endowment program is that funds should be managed so that a gift today will fund a donor’s objective in perpetuity. For example, if a benefactor endows a scholarship, the money is managed with the goal of maintaining the real value of the endowment over time to keep pace with inflation. Each gift entering the consolidated endowment fund purchases units analogous to shares in a mutual fund, and a program support payout-per-unit (or dividend) is paid quarterly.

In an effort to maintain the endowment’s purchasing power, the payout rate for program support is adjusted annually to reflect the change in the Consumer Price Index over the preceding calendar year. A twelve-quarter average of endowment values is used to smooth out the unit values when determining if program spending falls within the FY15 approved range of 3.20

percent - 4.70 percent. Without this moving average, funding might dramatically rise in one year, then fall drastically the next, leaving the beneficiaries of the endowments vulnerable to the volatility of the capital markets.

Policy on endowment management is made by the Foundation’s Investment Committee, whose main focus is the asset allocation of the fund and the endowment’s spending policy. Foundation staff leads asset allocation decisions, the selection and retention of investments, and performance monitoring. Consultants are retained for operational diligence. To completely diversify its portfolio, management of the fund is allocated across more than 70 management firms offering a wide variety of asset classes and investment styles.

31Virginia Tech Philanthropy Annual Report

Constant generosity in a year of growth and changeA message from Elizabeth A. “Betsy” Flanagan, Vice President for Development and University Relations

The impact of philanthropy on Virginia Tech was visible on campus and beyond in fiscal year 2013-2014.

November saw the opening of the Moss Arts Center,

which millions in donations helped make possible. Toward the end of the spring term, the College of Engineering’s Goodwin Hall opened as well.

Across the Atlantic Ocean, in Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, the university’s main international facility celebrated the completion of a major renovation and expansion, and was renamed the Steger Center for International Scholarship in honor of our former president.

University Development raised $80.08 million overall, including a record $5.22 million for the Center for the Arts and the spectacular, Moss Arts Center building that houses it. The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets also raised its most money ever, $4.06 million, which was a 72.5 percent increase over fiscal 2012-2013.

Other colleges or programs that had large increases in gift income were the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, which increased the amount it raised by 39.2 percent, to its highest level of gift income since fiscal 2006-2007; the College

of Architecture and Urban Studies, which raised 46.3 percent more; Diversity and Inclusion, which increased the amount it raised by 15.1 percent; Student Affairs and Parent Support; which had a 26.3 percent increase; and University Libraries, which raised 17.9 percent more.

Undergraduate Education more than quintupled the amount it raised. The College of Engineering raised the most of any academic designation, bringing in $15.76 million. The $19.70 million raised by Intercollegiate Athletics was the most of any unit.

Annual Giving posted its fifth consecutive year of increased revenue and set a new record, $6.54 million, in gifts received, which was a 32.2 increase over the prior fiscal year.

Membership in the Ut Prosim, Legacy, and Caldwell gift societies continued to grow, and a significant portion of gift income—$17.56 million—was endowed, helping propel the market value of the foundation’s endowed assets to a record high as of June 30.

During a year that saw numerous changes, with new buildings opening on campus and a new president taking office in June, one constant was the dedication of numerous alumni, friends, and employees of the university who made gifts.

More information on the year’s philanthropy is on the following pages. All of us at Virginia Tech deeply appreciate the generosity that helps us to make a positive impact on the commonwealth, the nation, and the world, as well as on the lives of all those we serve.
