Joining Instructions for the University of Plymouth sessions – Wednesday and Friday https://www.plymouth.ac.uk/whats-on/innovation-and-knowledge-in-the-wilds-aka-peripatetic-learning Joining Instructions - Dartmoor National Park & the Guided Walk Dartmoor National Park is one of the largest areas of natural wilderness in the South of England covering 368 square miles and consisting of exposed and open moorland, granite Tors, deep wooded valleys and fast flowing rivers. Since as early as 3500BC man has exploited the resources abundant on the moor, and since then the moor has provided an important resource, of one kind or another, for the residents living in the region. This continues to the present day, where much of the moorland is used for farming animals. Large sections of the moor are set aside as training and firing ranges for the military. The Moor also represents a significant tourist asset attracting many visitors to the region. The Guided Walk The guided walk will last approximately 5 hours and will take a broadly circular route, starting and finishing in the public car park at Shipley Bridge on South Moor. Delegates are encouraged to share cars to reach this location and be mindful that valuables should not be left in cars. The walk is led by Dr Alexander, an active innovation researcher and qualified mountain walking guide. The walk is set at a pace that should be comfortable, but the terrain that we will cross may be considered to be challenging, as the case studies and examples are not located in places that are served by manmade footpaths or established tracks. During the day there will ample time to talk and to practice what is referred to as the ‘Socratic method of learning’ – peripatetic learning – in essence learning whilst walking. Delegates will be given orated case studies whilst walking the route and also whilst stopped to take refreshment and eat lunch. The purpose of the walk is to bring to life the heritage examples of Innovation on Dartmoor and to allow learners to reflect on both the innovation context and also the process of learning from case studies and reflection. The locations that have been chosen for the stops are excellent examples of innovation in a context which is unlikely to be familiar to any of the delegates. Health & Safety and Personal Protective Equipment Visiting Dartmoor can be a hugely rewarding experience but it can also prove challenging and in some instances can be dangerous. Dr Alexander is fully qualified to lead walking groups, have undertaken a detail risk assessment and put in place a risk management plan for this walk. Delegates must ensure they bring the right clothing and equipment. Stout shoes or boots are required, as are suitable walking clothes and a waterproof jacket and trousers. Carried in a rucksack delegates should bring a warm hat and gloves and also a sun hat and sun cream. A packed lunch is required, along with suitable drinks to keep the candidates hydrated throughout the day. Delegates may choose to bring any other items they may have for outdoor walking (such as gaiters, walking poles etc.) A safety briefing will be provided to delegates before heading out onto the moorland and this will include what to do if we find any Ordinance or other hazardous items on our route. Dr Alexander will be carrying First Aid and other emergency equipment. If the weather is seriously inclement then the walk may be cancelled and class room activities provided as an alternative, but this is a last resort.
