"Technology is the ONLY discipline I have identified that has the ability to alter our

ways of life whether we choose to embrace it or not; even religion can't do that.“

Technology innovation

Patent eligibility post-Alice era: The US Supreme Court decision in Alice v CLS Bank (2014) regarding the eligibility

of subject matter for patent protection has had an enormous impact on the ability to protect computer-implemented

inventions in particular.

2008: For the first time, the number of internet users accessing the internet over wifi surpassed those accessing

over landline.

2013: By 2013, there were at least 2 things connected to the internet for every one human’s personal advice.

Between 2016 and 2020: the number of things connected to the internet is expected to grow more than 200%.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

15

“AI is the new electricity”, said Andrew Ng, co-founder of Coursera and an adjunct Stanford professor who founded the

Google Brain Deep Learning project. “About 100 years ago, AI transformed every major industry. AI has advanced to the

point where it has the power to transform every major sectors in the coming years”.

Blockchain

21

Big banks and some governments are implementing blockchains as distributed ledgers to revolutionize the way information

is stored and transactions occur. Their goals are laudable—speed, lower cost, security, fewer errors, and the elimination of

central points of attack and failure. These models don’t necessarily involve a cryptocurrency for payments.

Disruptive Technology Are Transforming Infrastructures

26

Traditionally, infrastructure projects have been seen as predictable on the long term, engineering-driven and based

on proven technologies. However, this reality is changing fast and a wide array of disruptive technology are rapidly

transforming the way infrastructure projects are built and operated within the developing world.

As organizations strive to align IT and operational technology to drive digital business innovations, infrastructure &

operations (I&O) leaders should focus on 10 key technology trends to support these initiatives.

These technology trends fall under three areas – strategic, tactical and organizational.

Strategic

• Disappearing Data Centers

• Interconnect Fabrics

• Containers, Microservices and Application Streams

Tactical

• Business-Driven IT

• Data Center as a Service

• Stranded Capacity

• Internet of Things

Organizational

• Remote Device Management

• Micro and Edge Computing Environments

• New Roles in IT

Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and New Apps – New categories of apps will include AR and VR

technologies to provide virtual personal assistants, thus allowing operators to provide better customer service to passengers

(i.e. gate information, baggage belt location), as well as benefit the commercial activities of airports by targeted marketing

and promotions.

The Internet of Things (IoT) – The digital revolution enable passengers and freight services to use cloud computing and

other technology to gather and analyze information and data.

Cyber-security breaches – Following cyber-attacks, transport operators are susceptible to lose control of the operational

aspects of the vehicles (trains, metros) and data.

Smart Cities: Dubai Case Study

30

Since 2009 and for the first time in history, more people lived in urban centers than rural areas.

Global cities have emerged and the global technology industry is keen to make smart cities a success.

Dubai is willing to become a smart city and various initiatives were launched whilst integrating technologies such as

Information Communication Technologies (ICT) and the Internet of Things (IoT) into its hard and soft infrastructure.

Examples of projects in Dubai:

“The way in which new technologies are lowering the cost to make financial transactions more

accessible, even in very small numbers… I think we are about to see massive disruptions”

Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the IMF
