CIVITAVECCHIA (Italy)
The port city of Civitavecchia lies about an hour from Italy’s capital, Rome, and is the starting point for excursions into the ‘Eternal City’. Rome probably needs no introduction – it is the ultimate vacation destination - there is perhaps no other city so crammed full of history, with layer upon layer of fabulous ruins and imperial
temples, not to mention Etruscan tombs, early Christian churches, medieval bell towers, Renaissance palaces and baroque basilicas, all which can be enjoyed under the magic of the warm Southern sun.
CIV02 - ROME, BAROQUE TOUR ! ! ! Duration: full day, lunch not included Rome – one of the world’s most iconic cities that is both steeped in history and rich in Italian charm – awaits you after an approx. 1.5-hour coach drive from Civitavecchia. A city guide will be on hand to meet you on arrival and then escort you on a Roman tour that includes external viewings of the Colosseum and Roman Forum. The Pope’s weekly Angelus – held on St. Peter’s Square every Sunday – can also be attended, giving you a chance to admire the splendid Bernini Column at the same time. Free time to explore on your own will be made available as well. A visit to the Basilica is well worthwhile – your guide will provide information on the site beforehand. The excursion draws to a close with a walk to the Pantheon and the lovely Piazza Navona. After saying goodbye to your guide, you will return to the port. Please note: the excursion includes a long walking tour. Lunch is not included in the price of the excursion and is at the clients’ charge. The possibility of attending the “Angelus” will be reconfirmed on board as it depends on the Vatican’s programmes and is foreseen only during Sunday calls. BCN05 - PANORAMIC CITY TOUR & NOU CAMP STADIUM ! ! Duration: 3.5 hours Thanks to the sheer scale of its impressive architecture, Barcelona’s Camp Nou Stadium – one of the world’s most famous football temples and the largest stadium in all of Europe with a capacity to seat nearly 100,000 people – is a fascinating destination, whether you are a soccer fan or not. Apart from hosting numerous key UEFA matches throughout the years, the stadium has also been used to stage other events, including concerts given by such major pop artists as Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Tracy Chapman or U2. In 1982, Pope John Paul II even celebrated mass at the stadium, on which occasion he was made an honorary citizen of Barcelona. Your tour begins with a drive-by sightseeing tour past Gaudi’s Sagrada Família, a minor basilica, and up Montjuich Hill before arriving at Camp Nou Stadium. Please note: the feasibility of the tour is subject to the schedule of the football club and then the stadium could be closed with very short notice; for this reason the tour could be cancelled even the day before our call for reasons beyond MSC’s control. Apart from being home to a statue of the Virgin of Montserrat – also known as the Black Madonna or La Moreneta – the monastery boasts a basilica with a resplendent interior that stands in stark contrast to its somewhat austere exterior. Interestingly, the monastery also hosts a publishing house that counts as one of the world’s oldest still functioning presses, with the first book having been printed in 1499. You will have time to look around by yourself before returning to Barcelona. Please note: the guide will give explanation only outside the Monastery; guests will visit the site individually. The museum was originally constructed for the Barcelona International Exhibition in 1929 with the aim of mimicking a townscape that would reflect the architecture, style and culture typical of various Spanish regions in a single place. A 30-minute flamenco show accompanied by a fruity sangria punch rounds off your tour. Please note: this tour is not available on 21.03.2015 (MSC Sinfonia).

WARNEMUNDE (Germany)
Having been founded in about 1200, the small Baltic town of Warnemünde – near Rostock at the estuary of the River Warnow in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern – spent the first few centuries of its existence as a rather unimportant fishing village before becoming a popular seaside resort in the 19th century, which it
has remained ever since.
WAR01 – A TASTE OF ROSTOCK ! ! " ! " Duration: 4.5 hours Make the most of your call in Warnemünde and spend half a day exploring the gorgeous old Hanseatic city of Rostock, just a stone’s throw by coach from the port. Accompanied by your guide, a walking tour will introduce you to Rostock and its gabled, brick-fronted houses and main landmarks. After a chance to visit the 13th-century Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Mary, Rostock’s largest and most important, you’ll move on to the Kröpeliner Gate, built around 1900, the 13th-century city hall, Rostock University, founded in 1419, and the 13th-century Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Cross. As seeing the sights can be thirsty work and since Germany prides itself in its traditionally brewed beers, you’ll head for a local brewery for a refreshing beer-tasting session. A relaxing 30-minute coach journey back to Warnemünde and your waiting ship will then bring the tour to a close. Please note: this tour is not suitable for guests with walking difficulties or using a wheelchair. Limited number of guides in languages other than German. Should a tour guide for your language be unavailable, the tour will be provided in German only.
WAR02 – BERLIN " " ! The tour will then take you to Charlottenburg Palace, a vast complex in Baroque-/Rococo-style that dates back to the late 17th-/early 18th centuries. After a chance to take some photos, you’ll move on through the west of Berlin, driving down Kurfürstendamm, then passing the 19th-century Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and the KaDeWe, Germany’s largest department store. As you head for east Berlin, the route will take you past the 19th-century Victory Column and Potsdamer Platz before you’ll have some free time to explore the area around the Brandenburg Gate. During the communist era, this was the site of the terrifying

“death strip”, but now freed of this oppressive spectre, the area welcomes visitors with the German Reichstag building on the one and the lovely Unter den Linden boulevard on the other side. Re-connect with your guide at the nearby Holocaust Memorial before heading for east Berlin, passing Bebelplatz, Gendarmenmarkt, Checkpoint Charlie – an iconic reminder of the former political division – and Alexanderplatz with its imposing TV tower. Your last stop will be the 1.3-km stretch of remaining Berlin Wall called the East Side Gallery, adorned with graffiti, after which you’ll re-board your coach for the journey back to the ship. Please note: this tour is not suitable for guests with walking difficulties or using a wheelchair. Limited number of guides in languages other than German. Should a tour guide for your language be unavailable, the tour will be provided in German only.
WAR03 – THE FAIRYTALE CITY OF SCHWERIN " " ! Duration: approx. 6 hours, lunch not included About a 1-hour drive to the south of Rostock is where you’ll find an all-German chance to step back in time at the historical town of Schwerin, situated on the shores of the scenic Lake Schwerin in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. These fairy-tail environs are the destination of this entertaining tour, which begins with your coach transfer from the port. You’ll then meet your guide and amble down the narrow old streets to reach the imposing brick Gothic cathedral in the middle of town, along with the beautiful buildings flanking the marketplace. You only have to look around to see the old town hall and the so-called “new building” from the 18th-century along with its 14 pillars. Strolling on, you’ll then head for the utterly amazing Schwerin Castle, which is surrounded by palatial gardens and sits on an island in Lake Schwerin. This celebration of romantic Historicism was created in the mid-19th century and stepping out into its meticulously manicured two-tiered gardens – one at water level and the other set higher with a fragrant orangery – is sure to transport you to a world of royal pleasures, at least for a little while. You’ll also have some time to explore the centre of Schwerin on your own or find a place to have a snack (not included in the price of the tour) before you begin your return journey to Warnemünde and your ship. Please note: this tour is not suitable for guests with walking difficulties or using a wheelchair. Limited number of guides in languages other than German. Should a tour guide for your language be unavailable, the tour will be provided in German only.
WAR04 – THE HANSEATIC CITY OF LUBECK " " ! A 2-hour coach drive through north Germany’s bucolic countryside to Lübeck begins your tour, after which you’ll meet your guide and begin your enjoyable city itinerary. The city abounds with reminders of the Hanseatic League’s heyday between the 11th and 17th centuries, from the lovely old streets, buildings and courtyards, through the fabulous Holsten Gate and the seven spires of Lübeck’s five churches, right up to the late 13th-century Hospital of the Holy Ghost and the 13th-/14th-century Church of St. Mary, home to the world’s largest mechanical organ. A look at the 14th-/15th-century old town hall is also on the itinerary before you move on to Niederegger House to learn a little about the fine art of making marzipan. Free time is then scheduled for you to spend as you wish, perhaps continuing your exploration of the city or stopping for lunch in one of the many cafés and restaurants (not covered by the price of the tour), before you begin your relaxing coach ride back to Warnemünde and your ship. Please note: this tour is not suitable for guests with walking difficulties or using a wheelchair. Limited number of guides in languages other than German.
