Sending a Distress callSending a Distress call

If the ship is threatened by grave and imminent danger, one can use Inmarsat-C SES to send a distress alert. This alert is routed automatically through a LES to an associated Rescue Co-ordination Centre (RCC).

If your terminal is fitted with a dedicated distress button (or a combination of buttons), you may send a distress alert simply by pressing the button(s) and holding down for the required number of seconds (typically five seconds).

Fill in the selections on the menu presented, entering first your vessel’s position

Select the nature of the distress from the list provided.

Select an LES, preferably the one nearest to your vessel within your ocean region.

Send the distress alert.

Wait for an acknowledgment from the LES. If no reply within 5 minutes, repeat the procedure.
