O pen Day has come and gone for another year and what a success it

was. The weather was terrific; the best for many years and that made the day all the more enjoyable. We believe there were close to 800 in attendance. Open Day is our big promotional activity of the year, it provides an opportunity not only for parents, prospective parents and visitors an opportunity to see what our students are up to and what our program looks like but an opportunity for students in all areas to show off their skills and the work they have been doing. I am very proud of the way they represented the College and consequently themselves and I had a lot of positive feed-back from visitors. The preparation for Open Day is enormous and there are often some quite mundane and boring tasks to be done but again the students did it without complaint and I be-lieve in record time this year. My thanks to the students and staff who also did a mag-nificent job both in the lead up to and on Open Day. This year we combined the opening of The “Stan Ravenhill” Robotic Dairy with Open Day and this was a wonderful highlight of the Day. Terry Redman MLA Minister for Regional Development and Lands and for-mer Principal officially opened the dairy. There were over 300 people present at the opening with 50 members of the Ravenhill family present on the day showing wonder-ful support to the College. All visitors to the dairy had the opportunity to see the cows being milked by the robots; it was a very special opportunity to see the very latest technology available in the dairy industry and was valued by all. Terry de Vos our dairy manager did a wonderful job presenting the dairy in the best possible way while main-taining his milking program. He even ‘organised’ a new calf for display.

Our next big activity is Farm Skills and the Royal Show only a couple of weeks away and students are busy honing their skills and applying the finishing touches to stock. Many parents would have seen the cattle and sheep on dis-play at Open Day. I’m sure they will do well and I’m positive that all students will have a great time. Farm Skills are on Thursday the 22nd September with the Royal Show starting on Saturday the 24th. If parents are in the vicinity of the Claremont showgrounds please drop in to support our students. Best of luck to all involved. Independent Public Schools (IPS) Update. It is terrific to be able to report that the College was successful with its submis-sion to become an IPS. Special mention must be made of Kevin Osborne and Steve Jones our College Council Chair who put together the presentation for the IPS selection panel. There were 73 schools in this round elevated to be-come IPS. This is an exciting time for the College, there is a lot of work to do over the next few months and beyond

but ultimately I am confident it will lead to better outcomes for our students. Students are all busy as we approach the end of term particularly for those students studying in the Year 12 ATAR program with exams coming up in the last week of term and then final WACE exams starting on the 31st October. Good luck to those students studying for these exams, it is always a stressful time. With holidays rapidly approaching it is time-ly to wish all parents and students an enjoy-able break!

From the Principal’s Desk It is terrific to report that the College was successful with its sub-

mission to become an Independent Public School...

Year 12 Finish Our Year 12 students have until Friday Octo-ber 21 (the second week of Term 4) to com-plete their school-based education pro-grams at the College. However, many of our Year 12’s who are not sitting for WACE exams may complete their education pro-grams earlier than that date. As soon as our Year 12 students finish their education pro-gram at the College in Term 4 they are required to leave the campus. We will pro-vide Year 12 students with a Clearance Form that will act as a checklist to make sure they’ve completed all of their course requirements before they leave. Year 12 WACE Examination Dates This year’s WACE examination dates are as follows:

Animal Production Systems: 2.00 pm Monday 31 October.

English: 9.20 am Wednesday 2 November.

Plant Production Systems: 9.20 am Thursday 3 November.

Mathematics Applications: 9.20 am Friday 4 November.

Biology: 2.00 pm Friday 10 Novem-ber.

All exams will take place at the Denmark Senior High School. The College will transport students to and from the venue. OLNA Testing The second round of OLNA testing has been completed. The results of the tests will be available to schools in late November. Those students who do not achieve the re-quired “Category 3” result in either the reading, writing or numeracy tests will have two further opportunities in Year 11 and a further two opportunities in Year 12. Students who are completing Year 12 this year and who do not meet the required

standards in this round will still receive a Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement (WASSA) which provides a formal record of what they have achieved during their secondary schooling. For these students, the Schools Curric-ulum and Standards Authority (SCSA) will provide opportunities for students to sit the relevant components during any future rounds of OLNA. When stu-dents have demonstrated the stand-ards and they have met all the other requirements of the WACE current in that year, they will be awarded the WACE. 2017 Course Selections Parents or guardians of our 2017 Year 11 and 12 students will soon be receiv-ing Course Selection forms and infor-mation. A reminder that parents/guardians are invited to contact either myself or Steve Swallow, our Head of Studies, if they have any queries regarding the programs or courses on offer. We will also run two Course Information ses-sions in the College Lecture Theatre on Sunday October 9 at:

2.30 pm for 2016 Year 12 par-ents and students.

3.30 pm for 2016 Year 11 par-ents and students.

New students and parents will also have the opportunity to discuss the education programs at our Enrolment Day interviews on December 8-9. Year 10 Work Experience Parents or guardians of our current Year 10 students will also be receiving information before the end of this term regarding a one-week block of

school-authorised work experience at the end of Term 4. If parents have any ques-tions regarding this work experience block they should contact me at the College. Parent Surveys One of the most important ways the College improves the quality of education, training and care that we provide our students is by feedback from one of our most important stakeholders – parents. This year’s online parent survey can be completed by access-ing the following link:

https://www.schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/ccvCx6Tc

Last year we had an outstanding return rate for the surveys and the information we re-ceived was used to help shape our 2016 school plan. This is one opportunity for par-ents to provide important critical feedback to the College on how you think we are go-ing, so I urge you to take it.

From the Deputy Our Year 12 students have until Friday October 21 (second week of Term 4) to

complete their school-based education programs. At the College...

Primary Awareness Day—Team Effort

Students did a fabulous job as Group Leaders on Primary School Agricultural Awareness Day, keeping large groups of children together and on time as they moved through the College from activity to activity. Congratulations to tour bus guides Patrick Swallow and Cassia Thornton-Weyrich who assisted teaching staff Brad Woodruff and David Nunn, ferry our small visitors between the College and the robotic dairy - their presentations were very professional. Kudos also goes to students who volunteered to assist at the activity stations, Lily Le Seur & Tiana Bain (Cattle) Sam Marsh, Connor Marsden & Corey Narkle (sheep) Jess White & Mikaela Bradford (Equine) Sasha McWilliams (Dairy) Gus Thomas & Shannon Hull (Machinery) and Lioune Delport (Poultry) who all did a sterling job demonstrating the diversity of agricul-tural education to Year 5 & 6 Primary School chil-dren. Well done team.

Trap and Release Programme Biology & Science Teacher Rob Calcraft (rear left) with students who attended a recent Biology Study Camp. Students visited the Two Peoples Bay Ranger Station and participated in the trap and release pro-gram being conducted in the area. Students currently studying Unit 1 Biology have been learning about population dynamics in ecosys-tems. The trap and release program is an excellent example of a real life program that measures popu-lation distribution of local species, and in turn com-plements and supports current student learning.

Humanities Project a Success The Year 10 Humanities and Social Science classes would like to thank everyone who supported their fundraising ventures before and during Open Day. Thanks to the parents who were able to assist with all kinds of things, like provid-ing wood for the raffle, baking goodies, organising face-painting supplies, and buying sweets for lolly bags and chocolates for prizes. Thank you to the many staff who assisted with preparations in various ways. Thanks to everyone who came by the stalls and guessed jelly bean numbers, bought products and raffle tickets, put their name on the hundreds board, had their face painted or simply donated. Over $2,350 was raised towards three charities chosen by the students:

SolarBuddy

Rotary/ShelterBox, and

Week 10, Term 3, the holidays are upon us and I do believe we are all looking forward to our spring break. Residential Activities Up to 30 students and 4 staff will have spent a weekend at the beautiful Cheynes Beach camp ground by the time you receive this newsletter. I will be reporting on their ad-ventures in the next edition. Our College netball team made the grand finals and played very well to be defeated by the Denmark SHS. They were well support-ed on Thursday night with Ag students lining the court cheering them on. Leavers Jackets 2016—Time Running Out I still have a number of leavers jackets waiting to be collected. Can you please check with your Year 12 child and if they have not yet got their jacket, please organ-ise for this to be picked up. Jackets are $98.50 and payment is required upon collec-tion. Year 11’s will be asked to form a committee in Term 4 to prepare the design for the next year’s jacket. School Ball Committee 2017 I will be calling for committee members for the 2017 Annual Ball. We will be deciding on the theme, venue and getting organised early. At this early planning stage I would like to notify you all that it is my intention to move the Annual Ball into Term 2 as Term 1 gets a little hectic. I will keep you posted. Points System and Gating We are having discussions regarding our points system and evaluating whether it remains ‘fit for purpose’ at our College. Staff acknowledge the need to improve and remain consistent when applying this disci-plinary measure, however we are looking

into other methods for comparison and possible use. Currently students who are gated will be reminded on Wednesday evening and Thursday morning and given every opportunity to remove this status. If they are listed as gated when staff hand-over on Friday morning I will telephone parents and guardians to advise as such. I do understand that a student being gated can at different times cause disruption to family plans and sporting commitments. The gating system applies to all resi-dential students and those students who are catching the Love’s Bus back into Albany on the weekend. I appre-

ciate your support on this. I know that it may inconvenience you however it is im-portant that we remain consistent with all students. If further information is required please do not hesitate to contact me. Laundry We are still accumulating unnamed clothing in the laundry. Can you please encourage your child to regularly check the table for clothing that belongs to them. Clothing without name tags will be dis-played on the table for collection when the laundry is staffed, otherwise it will be packed away until the following shift. Dorm and Dorm D Laundry The two dorm laundries have been fitted with new dryers. A dorm has a new washing machine and students are encouraged to use the machines to wash their casuals, un-derwear and program uniform if they wish. FARM CLOTHING MUST be taken up to the main laundry to be washed. The industrial machines are designed to wash the farm clothing at a high temperature and can han-dle the mud and animal excrement often imported into the machines from clothing. Parents/Guardians can you please remind your child of the importance of having properly washed clothing for hygiene rea-sons and personal presentation. College Uniforms Can you please regularly check your child’s uniform, in particular Year 11 and Year 12 to make sure students are not wearing clothing that is too small, ripped or stained. We ask that you also check the condition of boots. We do have some second hand uniforms available and you can contact me for that information if you are interested.

Painting in the dorms has been com-pleted and what an epic that has been. We will be rewarding the students with a special dinner and fun night on Wednesday, 12th October 2016. Staff and students are required to dress up in their favourite inter-esting costume and join us for a cra-zy quiz night that will culminate in a game of bubble soccer, where we blow up great big orbs, climb inside and get competitive. We did have this event planned for a couple of weeks ago however our Chaplain fell ill and we had to post pone.

Health and Wellbeing The College continues to provide support to students requiring doctors and other health related appointments. Where possible these appointments are made outside of school hours to minimise disruption to the school program. For any follow up appointments with spe-cialists the College asks parents and carers, where possible, to make these during school holidays. Great Southern Radiology has a practice open in Denmark which can complete x-rays and ultrasound procedures without the need to travel to Albany. We ask that you contact the College if your child has any medical imaging needs before appointments are made in Albany to see if they can be accommodated at the local Denmark clinic. When students are ill in residence the College will provide immediate care and will arrange necessary medical appointments. To minimise the spread of illness all stu-dents who are ill are required to remain in their rooms, eat after all other students and minimise contact with other students until recovered. If students are unable to participate in the learning program for more than one day the College will contact families to discuss alter-native care arrangements. Medication A reminder for all parents and students that you are required to hand in any medication to Residential staff so that it can be record-ed and stored appropriately. Weekend Leave Please ensure weekend leave forms are in by close of business each Wednesday so that we can prepare for the weekend accordingly. The College will contact you if there are any concerns regarding leave arrangements. Student safety is our utmost concern with regard to leave.

Travel Arrangements for Home Week-ends and End of Term The College organises travel arrange-ments for students (bus tickets) for the end of Term 3 and return to Col-lege for commencement of Term 4. The return time will be booked for students to arrive together in the afternoon for one pick up. Tickets that are changed so as to arrive at a later time will incur a pick up fee by the College of $100.00. All other travel arrangements through-out the term are to be arranged by the parent/guardian.

Time Trial As Residential Manager I will be trial-ling a start time of 12 noon each Wednesday and working through to 8pm, giving me more access time to residential students. Please keep this in mind if you are wishing to contact me at the College.

We say farewell...

Geoff Moyle the Director of Agricul-tural Education and known to many staff and parents as a regular attendee at our Open Days and Graduation ceremo-nies over many years is retiring. Geoff was the Prin-

cipal at The WA College of Agriculture-Cunderdin prior to his appointment to the position as Director. Having an Agricultural Directorate in our Central Office is critically important to main-tain a voice for Agricultural Education and in an era of change even more vital. Geoff has been a passionate supporter of Agricultural Education in both his roles and we wish him well in his retirement. Geoff’s position will be filled in an acting capacity by Bernard Beatty the current Prin-cipal at Cunderdin for 6 months when the position will be advertised substantively. We look forward to working with Bernard in his new role.

We also say a fond farewell and thank you to our senior Sheep & Equine Teacher, Leanne Grant-Williams who is taking up a post at the WA College of Agriculture-Cunderdin. The new posting will take Leanne clos-er to home and family but she will be sadly missed here in Denmark.

During her time at the College, Leanne has introduced a very successful Corriedale breeding program in addition to running an excellent sheep and wool handling program and overseeing the Equine program.

The term is quickly coming to an end and students have had a very busy term with completing their competency assessments, Royal Show training and sheep judging days in Katanning, as well as active participation in our Open Day. Once again we are taking our Farm Skills teams to the Perth Royal Show and four teams have been very busy practising and training for the following events:

Farm Skills Competition

Student Parader’s Competition

Weigh Steers & Heifers

Corriedale Judging Event

Junior Steer Assessment

Sheep Dog Challenge

AWI Young Breeders

Beef Parader’s Competition

Beef Judging Competition

Dairy Parading The advantage of attending the Show and entering the inter-College Farm Skills com-petition is that students are heavily involved in the preparation, parading and judging of livestock, participate in Junior Judging com-petitions in sheep, wool and cattle divisions; They undertake steward duties during the Show and have the opportunity to match their farm skills against their peers. We wish them all the very best of luck. We will be staying at Distance Education (SIDE) in Oxford Street, Leederville from Wednesday 23 September to Saturday 3 October and travel arrangements and a pro-gram covering each student attending has been sent home for parents to look at. If there are any questions regarding the days, please do not hesitate to contact me on 0428 480205. Because of the responsibilities placed on the College staff and students and the im-portant nature of the Show, students are selected not only for their ability to com-

pete in the various events , but also because they have achieved a level of good conduct and good standing on a consistent level. I would like to thank those students that will be attending and those staff members who have also put their hand up to assist, it is a big event and extremely demanding while greatly rewarding for all that participate.

It has been pleasing to note the majority of our students are making sound progress with their assignments and assessment tasks. A list of assessment tasks due for each subject next term will be listed in the first newsletter of Term 4 and on the College website..

The little time available in Term 4 will be used to complete any outstanding assign-ment work and units of competency.

Year 12 Internal College Exams

Students undertaking Year 12 (ATAR) cours-es should be preparing for their final exams. We intend to program the English, Biology and Maths internal exams during the final week of Term 3 and the Animal Production Systems and Plant Production Systems exams during Week 1 of Term 4. All of these exams will be three hours in length and cov-er course content from Terms 1, 2 and 3.

Exam dates are listed in the table below

All exams will commence at 8.30am and finish at approximately 12 noon. In accord-ance with the WA College of Agriculture – Denmark Assessment Policy, all students studying Year 12 (ATAR) courses must sit the exam on the day/time period specified.

The only exception to this requirement will be if the student has a medical certificate from a doctor confirming that the student was too unwell to participate on the day. Any student who does not attend the exam and/or fails to provide a valid medical cer-tificate will, without exception, receive a zero mark for the exam.

Teachers from the College have volun-teered their time to conduct revision sessions to prepare students for their final exams. These revision classes may occur after school (4.00pm to 5.00pm) during “prep” time or on weekends. I strongly urge parents to encourage their son/daughter to attend these sessions. I believe the additional revi-sion on offer will make a significant difference to their final results.

Thirteen students will also be com-pleting external WACE Australian Ter-tiary Admissions Rank examinations in early November. I urge all students involved to set time aside to revise and prepare for these major assessments.

Open Day

Thanks to staff and students who as-sisted with the Agricultural Studies (classroom display) for Open Day. We had a great deal of positive feedback on the display and our educational program. Thank you also to Jenni Westwood (Department of Agriculture & Food) for sharing resources that complemented the presentation. Primary Awareness Day

On Tuesday 6th September the College hosted a Primary School Agricultural Awareness Day. Over 300 primary school students from across the Great Southern attended and were involved in activities ranging from aquaculture, shearing and wool handling, bio-security, equine, beef cattle, poultry,

meat processing, bee-keeping and agricul-tural machinery. They also had the oppor-tunity to see our new robotic dairy in action.

It was a very successful day and hopefully will be repeated in 2017. Thanks to all College staff and students who were in-volved during the programme, in particular Jan Axe who played a key role with the organisation and co-ordination of the event.

2017 Course Counselling and Selections

Over the next few weeks we will commence counselling our current Year 10 and Year 11 students on their course selections for 2017. Course selection forms will then be sent out to parents/guardians towards the end of this term.

We will also run an information session for parents/guardians and students on Sunday 9th October when students return for the commencement of Term 4 to assist with the selection process.
