'Emotional resilience is a term often used to describe the ability leaders need to carry on day in and day out in the midst of troubling and stressful situations. It may mean concealing how one is feeling in order to maintain the direction in which one wishes to travel … Emotional resilience may also allow an individual to remain comfortable with the anxiety that often accompanies uncertainty of a situation.'
‘Feeling the Heat’ in Leader, Kirkham, 2006

‘If sleep does not serve an absolutely vital function then it is the biggest mistake the evolutionary process has ever made’ Alan Rechtschaffen
Sleep aids learning & helps reinforce memory Lack of sleep • Increased cortisol • Impact on cognitive function: lateral thinking &
creativity impaired • Similar to the brain under the influence of alcohol • Distorts emotions: feelings of depression/paranoia;
impaired risk assessment

The sleep-deprivation cycle
Poor quality of sleep; rumination or sleep induced by sedative (typically alcohol)
Awake tired
Caffeine
Increased cortisol
More alert Less creative
More impulsive
Less energy for complex tasks: they take longer
Arrive home with work to complete – becoming less efficient
Habitual discounting of need for sleep
Caffeine boosts cortisol when brain wants to shut down for sleep
Work late – tiredness reduces capacity for self-regulation → sleep procrastination
![Page 23: Initial research - Taunton Teaching Alliance€¦ · thoughts, tunnel vision, inappropriate rushing to decisions, fixation on single issue, muddled thinking, lack of focus Depressed,](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022071020/5fd47bb50ae6416c131787ac/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
The brain’s functioning
body’s reaction is turned off by activating the parasympathetic nervous system which relaxes & conserves energy
increased cortisol remains until …
Increased sugar, higher heart rate, raised blood
pressure
Message from brain to adrenal glands:
adrenaline & cortisol
to the amygdala activating
sympathetic nervous system
Under threat: blood flows to meet survival needs away from here

Scripts that drive our thought patterns
Produce reliable neat & accurate work. Well organised. Projects I have control over run smoothly
Naturally encourage harmony in a group; am empathic & consider others’ feelings
Stay calm under pressure. Like to be seen as ‘coping’ . Can remain objective. Strong sense of duty
Most energised by new things to do. Valued for my ability to get things off the ground. Often volunteer to take on new things
Respond well to short deadlines. Motivated by pressure. Sometimes delay starting things until they’re urgent. Quick thinking
![Page 31: Initial research - Taunton Teaching Alliance€¦ · thoughts, tunnel vision, inappropriate rushing to decisions, fixation on single issue, muddled thinking, lack of focus Depressed,](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022071020/5fd47bb50ae6416c131787ac/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
Time management Accept that human beings are incapable of perfection. Time how long tasks take towards reducing time spent. Set realistic deadlines. Question whether additional time spent adds significant value
Rehearse saying ‘no’ in a way that feels comfortable. Empower others by handing back their ‘monkeys’. Rehearse responses which give you time to think whether you have the capacity to oblige
Recognise that, like all human beings, you are vulnerable. Avoid disempowering others by giving and never receiving. Notice when you’re feeling overwhelmed and ask for help
Reward yourself for tackling routine tasks by following with more interesting ones. Delegate later stages of projects to ensure they’re completed. Ensure you’re clear about desired outcome of any initiative so you know when it’s complete.
Learn to value time to think. You can ‘be’ without ‘doing’. Take time to understand the needs of others. Plan sufficient time to avoid mistakes. Breathe!
