The Romantic Allureof the

Italian Lake DistrictFor centuries, Italy’s Lake District has seducedhearts, minds and souls; among them wereVirgil, Napoleon, Byron, Stendhal, Dickens,Flaubert, Puccini, Toscanini and Hemingway. But long before the Romans annexed theregion some 2,000 years ago and began tobuild their grid-based towns, it was settled byEtruscans and invaded by Celts. It seemed noone could resist the mild climate or the beautyof snow-capped Alpine peaks descending toserene lake shores. Following the Romans,Middle Ages and Renaissance nobility builtmagnificent holiday villas here, filled themwith priceless art and laid out extraordinarygardens. European aristocrats of the 18thand 19th centuries considered the Italian LakeDistrict an essential stop on their “grand tour”of Europe.

Lombardy became one of the richestand most economically developed areas ofItaly and Europe, thanks to its agriculturalproduction, trade and banking activities thatextended throughout Europe. “Lombard” wasthe name given to any merchant or bankercoming from northern Italy. And to this day,the region remains of paramount importanceto Italy.

From the deep-blue glacial lakes ofMaggiore and Como to the bewitchingVilla del Balbianello, from the medievalcobblestoned streets of Varenna to the modernsophistication of Milan, discover the exquisitegem that is the Italian Lake District.

The beautiful town of Stresa on Lake Maggiore hasbeckoned European aristocracy for centuries.
