V I K I N G SWhat is now called the Viking Age extended from the late 8th century to the 11th century. During this time the Vikings traveled from Scandinavia as far east as Constantinople (perhaps even to modern Iraq) and as far west as modern Newfoundland, in search of treasure, timber, and trade. Yes, their methods were at times harsh but they were not unique in forcing their way into established settlements. The Vikings were master ship builders, seafarers, and metal workers. Their settlements in Greenland and Newfoundland died out but others, notably Dublin, survive to this day. Viking infl uences on art, seafaring and navigation, and languages are profound.

The Jelling Rune Stones, located in Jelling, Denmark, are two massive carved stones dating from the 10th century. The older stone was commissioned by King Gorm the Old to honor his wife, Thyra. The larger stone was commissioned by their son Harald Bluetooth to honor his parents, to celebrate his victories over Denmark and Norway, and to commemorate the conversion of Demark to Christianity. Active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, esteemed Norwegian artist Theodor S. Kittelsen straddled the Naive and Neo-Romantic styles. His inspiration was usually nature or mythology, with mountains, birds, and trolls among his most popular themes.

Raised in a home plagued by tuberculosis, poverty, and mental illness, Norwegian Edvard Munch (1863-1944) developed a style refl ective of each. He sought, through his art, to “explain life and its meaning to myself.” He abandoned Impressionism and sought a style in which he could more readily release emotion and energy. Thus, his most famous work, The Scream.
