Read the following passage below and answer the questions that follow on the basis

of what is stated / implied in that passage.

My article below was written in reply to the cover article Was Darwin Wrong? in

the national Geographic for November 2004, a question that they answered inside with avery bit No. Receipt was acknowledged, but predictable no mention was ever made of it

in the magazine itself. I would like to comment here on this omission from an

anthroposophical perspective, because it directly concerns what Owen Barfield termed

The Great Tabu a prohibition that, like it or not, is still very much alive.

As all will doubtless know, a battle royale has been and is going on, in the United

States especially, between Christian Creationism and Darwinism. This battle is actually

between two opposing and scientifically unproductive monism, a non-critical Lucifericmonism of spirit on the one hand, and an illusionary Ahrimanic monism of matter on

the other. The Luciferic monism (Creationism) is based upon a literal interpretation of theBook of Genesis, whereas its Ahrimanic counterpart is based, as my article will clearly

demonstrate, chiefly upon a kind of trick, a seriously mistaken piece of verbal logic. At

the moment there appears to be very little room for any middle ground in this conflict,

but eventually there will be recognition of these failings and anthroposophists need to beprepared for it.

There is a brave attempt being made at developing a dualist middle ground, whichgoes under the name of intelligent Design theory, but it is rooted in conventional

religious thought and as most anthroposophist will realize this is ultimately not thesolution. It is a middle ground to be sure, and we should be thankful for it, but helpfulthough this is it cannot lead to a strengthening of the science of the spirit that Rudolf

Steiner bequeathed us, and so, without being at all negative we need to make this

difference clear to ourselves and to others. A science of the spirit can only arise out of amonism, never out of a dualism, Christian or otherwise, but it must arise from a monism

of spirit that is the product of critical thought, not one that, like Creationism, is based

upon a non-critical belief in holy writ.

A monism of thought was the name that Rudolf Steiner gave to a logically sound

epistemological argument that he made in support of a genuinely critical monism of

spirit. Steiners monism of thought is simply an intellectual argument. It is not in itself aseparate kind of monism, because there are only two possible monism, one of matter and

the other of spirit, only one of which can be true (i.e. the true source of all natural

creativity) But there exist a vast number of religious and philosophical arguments thathave been made in favour of them both Steiners argument his monism of thought

is in my view, and in the view of many, the most convincing to have appeared anywhere,

thereby filling a need that monist materialism has completely failed to fill. We must not,

however, confuse an epistemological argument with a monism in itself, i.e. with the

  • 8/8/2019 Infy English

    2/23

force that created the universe. An argument can point to the truth of a given monism and

encourage a critical approach to it, but can never replace it. A spiritual monism and an

argument concerning it are two totally different things, and we mix them up at our peril, because this leads, like Darwinism itself, to an unconscious dualism. Anthroposophy

cannot (must not) be based upon a dualism, because then it ceases to be a science of the

spirit and becomes just another religion, and a rather weird one at that which is howmost people see it today.

That with the advent of anthroposophy there now exist two opposing critical monismsis undeniable, as is the fact that ultimately only one of them can be true. However, neither

science nor religion really wants to know this, because it puts both of them in a

philosophically untenable position in contrast to anthroposophy. But this cannot be

helped; it is not a popularity contest that we are engaged in. If we are motivated by theseeming need to make anthroposophy popular, or scientifically respectable where

material monists are concerned, and are willing to gloss over the opposing monisms issue

in order to do this, then surely we are on the wrong track this is not what the future of

    anthroposophy requires of us.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The battle royale referred to in the passage is the conflict between

    1.

Darwins theory of evolution and the Christian concept of creation.

    2.

The Book of Genesis and Luciferic monism of thought3.

A scientifically unproductive monism and Ahnmanic monism of matter4.

    None of these

As can be inferred form the passage of question no 1

    A. Dualism goes against Steiners Science of the Spirit.

    B. Creationism stresses implicit faith through Holy Scriptures.

    C. The Intelligent Design Theory adopts a middle path in its approach to conflicts.

It can be reasonably inferred from the passage of question 1 that

    1. Steiners Monism of thought gives another dimension to the already existing

    monism of spirit.

    2. It is still a debatable issue as to which monism is the real source of natural

    creativity.

    3. Anthroposophy has resolved the issue of two opposing monisms.

Directions : Read the following passage below and answer the questions that follow

on the basis of what is stated / implied in that passage.

Human beings differ from preceding stages and beings in at least two basic ways.

They have a capacity to imagine, and are endowed with freedom of action. Pre-human

stages of matter and life have a deterministic existence. Matter follows definite physicaland chemical laws.

The seeds of vegetation and genes of animals quite conclusively determine how that

particular species would play its role in nature. But, with humans, we cannot predict their

  • 8/8/2019 Infy English

    5/23

behaviour with the same certainty as we can for plants and animals: We are more free to

determine our actions. In that crucial difference lies the possibility of creation or

    destruction.

Human beings are the only creatures that have to learn consciously to live in harmony

with nature. No other species of plants or animals needs to do this. At best, they need topick up life-saving skills, which they do in the natural course of growing up. The know-

ledge-seeking exercise is unique to human beings. The purpose of this exercise is to bring

about a harmony within and without inside an individual and with other individuals, within a family and with society, and within human society and with the rest of nature.

There is no consensus yet on the nature of knowledge that would enable us to strike the

best possible balance within and without. Spiritualism and materialism, as two distinct

streams of thought, have guided human action so far, but both have failed in terms ofproviding a comprehensive guide to betterment of the human condition.

Some tried to combine the two but achieved little success. Now we have more strife

than harmony in human life. Although we are just one species, our lack of wisdom hasmade us divide ourselves on the basis of race, gender, culture, class, nation, religion and

caste. This artificial division is the basis of all strife and human rights violations.

But in spite of our best efforts to exaggerate external differences to differentiate on

human being from the other, some basic features unite us. We are one in recognizing

basic human values, like trust and love, which form the foundation of a happy humansociety. The basic philosophy of most religions is quite similar. Only ritual make them

appear more different than they actually are.

Is it surprising that all around the globe, there is a consensus on the basic structure of

a family, the most crucial element forming the emotional bedrock of our lives, the that we

honour similar values across nations, race, culture and region ? This happened withoutany government edict or law.

Human rights are an important area of emerging consensus. Despite the various formsof governments that rule us, we are agreed on the nature of freedom that every human

being should enjoy. This is manifested in international treaties on the rights of

marginalized communities and expression of commitment by various governments to

    honour these.

In this sense we have begun to evolve into a global community. The future will see

weakening of national identities and strengthening of a single identity, that of a globalcitizen, not merely in the context of globalised economy, but other more basic ways

relating to celebration of human life and liberty.

That people around the world believe in values of truth and non-violence is evident in

the manner in which they turned out in large numbers on the streets to oppose the US

aggression in Afghanistan and Iraq. Some of the biggest protests were held inside the US.

No single organization or government was coordinating these protests.

  • 8/8/2019 Infy English

    6/23

People joined them following the dictates of their conscience. Similarly, we are

witnessing an emerging alliance of people and peoples movements around the worldagainst the anti-people policies of the governments, international monetary agencies and

multinational corporations working with the sole motive of profit-making. Such global

protests are a recent phenomenon. People across nations feel united to uphold somehigher values of life which need to be preserved against the attack of market forces and

governments. People are coming together to fight for freedom from market exploitation,

freedom from war and conflicts, gender justice, abolition of all forms of slavery anddiscrimination, upholding of human rights of minorities and indigenous people and state

terrorism in the name of war against terror. The dream of another world might not be all

    that utopian after all.
