Smart asset lifecycle and digital twin vision
Vision
Design Strategic Planning Planning Build
Smart Maintenance dependent on effective asset handover (digital twin)
at project handover & ongoing updating of maintenance plans and
asset information during maintenance. Also leverages smart sensors to enable predictive maintenance.
Smart Design focuses on federated 3D design developed
using standardised objects. Also linking of requirements,
time, cost, asset, etc. data that is easily visible to managers for
lifecycle value optimisation.
Smart Build enabled by digital contracts and 3D designs to co-
ordinate interfaces in multi-partner delivery. Focused on separating in-
ground and above ground scope, and encouraging modular manufacturing
and assembly over in-situ works.
Smart Planning achieves improved whole-of-life
investment decisions made with increased reliance on
integrated planning models and accurate benchmark &
forecasting data.
Smart Operations dependent on embedded smart sensors to adjust
services to meet live demands. Requires accurate geo-
referencing, and secure and fast communications networks.
• Structured project core data
• Modular supply agreements*
• Digital Contracts & variation mgmt.*
• In/above ground Contract
packaging*
• Data Standards for core data
• Library of assured objects,
cross-sections & modular
designs
• Federated BIM models with
digital design reviews
• Digital Twin of existing
assets*
• Centralised demand
modelling and integrated,
multi-modal service design*
• Reusable Benchmarking
• Automatic asset information
handover to O&M
• Centralised Asset Digital Twin*
• Alignment of asset cost and
financial data to support TOTEX.

Part 5: What are the first steps for industry to become
DE enabled?
Key lessons for success!
26
1. Have a clear long-term vision aligned with
international standards
2. Develop an incremental DE strategy with pilots &
quick wins that add value
3. Get DE Strategy approved and funded, with an
accountable sponsor
4. Setup a full-time and diverse team (5-10 people)
5. Achieve quick wins to build momentum
6. Focus on the four core enablers for each DE
discipline
