Infrastructure completion of hydrological research stations

Within the framework of the project DIHYS, the infrastructure of technical equipment was completed for hydrological research stations of Institute of Hydrology SAS in Michalovce and Liptovský Mikuláš for the purpose of complex monitoring of hydrological processes in lowland and mountain areas. As a result, it significantly improved the quality and variety of instrumentation as well as of research infrastructure by acquiring 52 instruments. Some instuments, software and equipment are rare within the European research scope. The most important of these are listed on the presented poster.

Experimental hydrological base in Liptovský Mikuláš was also equipped with a laser analyzer Picarro to measure the concentration of stable isotopes of oxygen-18 and deuterium in water samples (e.g. precipitation, snow cover, rivers and lakes, soil and groundwater and water from melting snow).

Neutron probe for determining a field soil moisture.

Instrument for collecting water quality data and data of a surface water bodies morphology - EcoMapper - AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). It is a unique system designed for water quality, water currents and bathymetry mapping applications and IH SAS is the sole owner of this platform in the Central Europe. The vehicle (torpedo) can self-containedly measure and monitor data of reservoirs and waterways at a continuous interval for missions ranging from 8-12 hours long.

Device for taking undisturbed samples of bottom sediments BEEKER SAMPLER with accessories, by which it is possible to sample bottom sediments of different consistencies (liquid and even uncohesive, unconsolidated) from 5 m depth. The samples are taken in a transparent tube, which allows visual assessment of the sample. The original stratification of the sampled material is maintained. The basic set of the device is supplied with press out and partitioning system.

All-weather weighting rain gauges OTT Pluvio2 use the latest technology based on high precision load cells and algorithms correcting for wind, temperature and evaporation. This allows measuring the amount and intensity of rainfall, snow, mixed precipitation-rain, snowfall and hail with high accuracy (0.1 mm).

This poster is the result of the project implementation: Infrastructure completion of hydrological research stations, ITMS code 26210120009 supported by the Research & Development Operational Programme funded by the ERDF.

Complex set of professional sonar EA 400SP with accessories belongs to rare research facilities in the Central Europe. It is possible to use it for precise surveying of water depth (from 1m), bottom structure and thickness of sediments. Dual frequency allows the identification of the thickness of bottom sediments.

Disdrometer OTT Parsivel2 is an optical, laser based instrument for measurement of particle size and velocity of solid and liquid precipitation.

SOMMER Snow Pack Analyzer SPA, SOMMER Snow Scale SSR and SOMMER Snow Depth Sensor USH-8 measure and record the snow water equivalent, snow density, liquid water content, ice content and snow depth.

It is a container set of five lysimeters with different soil monoliths of cylindrical shape with area 1m2 and depth 2.5 m with groundwater regulation. All lysimeters have highly accurate weighing system and very extensive sensor equipment for measuring volumetric soil moisture (by 0.10 m), the humidity potential and soil temperature (each 0.40 m) and also sampling devices for the collection of soil water in three height levels. It includes special software for automatic data collection, wireless data transmission, its processing and storage in a database. Lysimetric set also includes a complex automatic weather station. Lysimetric research is currently a very interesting and progressive approach to monitor complex ecosystems in nature-close conditions

Among unique instruments, there certainly belongs a Lysimeter station of the Hydrological Research Base IH SAS which was built on the East Slovakian Lowland in Petrovce nad Laborcom.

System of stationary measurements of snow characteristics is supplemented by portable equipment Toikka Snow Fork measuring snow water equivalent, snow density and liquid water content.
